That looks amazing - I shall most definately visit there! Thanks! Are you based on the Gold Coast yourself?

No, Brisbane...popped down to Springbrook recently though...lovely place...I'm a city person so inner west of Brisbane...inner west looks like this so bit different from Gold Coast :)

I would agree with Fish.01, Springbrook is beautiful and very accessable from the Gold Coast.

The G is starting up on 20/07, with free rides that day. My understanding is you can use the GO card which is used on the trains in it. Check how the service goes as they have had a few issues, not least with people driving down the tram tracks in cars by mistake !!!

I'm looking forward to taking a ride on it to see what it's like.

Nice picture fish.01 - don't get me wrong and I do like Brisbane and was really fond of it when we travelled there but we just want to be nearer to the coast - it's a shame really because my hubby will no doubt end up working in Brisbane and I'm sure will hate the commute each day, especially when we live in a small city inthe Uk and he's used to a nice & easy 10 minute commute... if only Brisbane was ON the coast! Pleased to hear about this new tram system though on the Gold COast - it's much needed!!!

Don't worry, we don't need anymore people in Brisbane so not recruiting for more people :) if you are a beach person then go for it !

The commute from main beach would seriously suck though...will he be driving ? A lot who commute to Brisbane from the GC end up in commuter suburbs on the northern end of the Gold Coast off the motorway. Personally I don't see the point as you still have a fair drive to the beach ...if I was doing it I think would I prefer to live in main beach on the actual gold coast strip and drive the extra bit but not sure ?

Have you considered Redcliffe in Brisbane or is it too quiet ?

Ultimately he wants to get work out in the mines but I know that is probably going to take a while so in the meantime he'd have to settle for a local job - from what I can gather there isn't all that much mechnical engineering work in the Gold Coast which potentially would mean him commuting to nearer Brisbane. I think he'd hate the commute by car and no doubt if work is available for him nearer to Brisbane then we probably would have to look at living a little closer. I totally agree about it being pointless living in the suburbs nearer the freeway but still miles away from the beach! Thanks for the tip off abot Redcliffe - It's a name I cam across yesterday and had a little look at but I think I'l look in to it a little further - that picture looks great! I could happily live there :-)

Im guessing the weather would be pretty much exactly the same as the Gold Coast? In fact does the Brizzy weather differ much to the Gold Coast?

Not much really...sunshine coast is a bit wetter, especially inland but in Brisbane and Gold Coast it probably more depends how far you are from the coast than anything else. For example, in the far west of Brisbane near Ipswich it gets hotter in summer and colder in winter. On the brisbane bayside it is cooler in summer and cooler in winter.

You do of course get some local differences but nothing "really" different between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Yes I figured the weather would be relatively similar - thanks for that. Having just used Google maps to do a bit of a search it says Redcliffe to Surfers is 1 hour 20 min drive - does that sound right to you? And also, whilst we are talking about the weather it really is the main reason we have chosen the Gold Coast area - I suffer horrendously with SAD in the UK so I'm looking forward to what I think is going be oretty much year round endless sunshine - am I right? Or, like at home in the UK, do you end up with days of grey miserable weather?

aconcannon I have planned your Brisbane life should you need to be in Brisbane for work ;)

2bed Apartment on the river in historic woolstores for $460 per week.

See: http://www.realestate.com.au/property-unit-qld-teneriffe-413347891

You asked for a lively area. It has lots of craft breweries, cafes, theatres etc...

If you are missing the water you can swim in your riverside pool:

I've only been in the GC for about 9 months, my initial impressions are it's mostly sunny ! In summer there were about 3 or 4 times when it was overcast for a few days, when it rained the cloud built up during the day and then there was a great big thunderstorm around 4 ish, not for very long but quite violent sometimes.

Winter has been so far mostly clear and sunny, like a lovely sunny winters day in the UK, but the sun is still warm !

I did go to Brisbane at Christmas to visit my OH family and I found it much more humid than the GC.

My hubby may have to get a job in Brissy, if the commute is to much for him we have discussed moving there, I was a bit reticent about that, but your post has just set my mind at rest a bit , it looks lovely.

I find it lovely....of course if you live in a far away suburb this stuff becomes less of your day to day life and the stuff in your suburb becomes your area more than Brisbane city and inner suburbs stuff. I would downsize rather than be forced to leave the inner area but each to their own. That's also why advice about a city can vary so much imo as people live in totally different areas with different stuff.

Gold Coast must be like this as well. Helensvale very different to Main Beach which is very different to Currumbin Valley. Helps to match your personality with your place rather than just go for the best/biggest house or whatever.

I knew it, who wouldn't want that life  ...seriously not trying to get you to change your mind...just throwing options out there for any of the people on this thread who might need to live closer....I would be jealous as I have two young kids so can't have that apartment :) ... though I do ride those cycle paths almost everyday and they are as nice as the photos look...

P.S. I'm going to have a nose at apartments now just to get an idea of what we can get for our budget of around $600 per week - is woolstores the only suburb that's relatively lively with the nice river views??? Thanks again!

Oh dear I feel like I'm messing with your life :)

Suburbs with river view apartments close to lively areas:

Teneriffe (woolstores buildings are in Teneriffe)

Newstead

New Farm

Bulimba

City

Kangaroo Point

Southbank

South Brisbane

West End

And maybe:

Toowong

Auchenflower

St Lucia

Hawthorne

East Brisbane

Supurb info as always - I'm going to explore all of these options this evening and print off this page to show the hubby! We did visit Brisbane for a few days when we backpacked in Aus back in 2008 but we didn't explore much more than the obvious tourist parts so I'm going to start researching! The city beach you have would be a failr ygood sacrifice for the Gold Coast beaches I reckon....?

I honestly couldn't say...I'm not the best judge as I don't think much about beaches....spend far more time at parks, events, cycling etc...southbank is a totally different thing as people in city office jobs go swimming at lunch time and on summers nights there are people bbq'ing and swimming late into the night...so great for what it is.

Being central on weekends some people drive to both the sunshine coast and gold coasts and also ferry/drive over to the Brisbane island beaches like Stradbroke, Moreton and Bribie:

You can take a bridge over to Bribie Island from the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Popular for 4WD'ing:

From Brisbane obviously the sunshine coast is big for day trips as well. I popped up to Noosa a few weekends ago and it really is lovely:

Also went to the huge Eumundi markets in the lovely town of Eumundi. The markets are fab, they just keep getting better:

It all looks absolutely beautiful and I am so excited about having all of these stunning places to explore right on my doorstep! You've been so incredibly helpful and have most certainly opened my eyes 9and hopefully others) to the possibility of a life in Brisbane and not just on the Gold Coast :-)

No, seriously it wouldn't.

The Southbank beach is a couple of hundred meters of sand on a man made lake in a park in Brisbane. Gold Coast and Sunny Coast beaches streach for tens od miles, are usually deserted, have pacific surf and compare with anywhere in the world.

I'm not knocking Brisbane but I drive 2 hours a day so I can live on the Gold Coast.

Thanks for your comments @freebo.

My husband and I are torn whether to live closer to Brisbane so that he/we can avoid the daily commute that we'll no doubty end up having to do, but I'm not so sure we can sacrifice the beachside living for a city pad just so we can get to and from work quicker! I'm coming around to the idea of being closer to Brisbane but I'm still not sure - it's interesting to hear you commute 2 hours so you can be on the Gold Coast - can I ask which suburb you are in? Thanks
