just listening to the radio in the van at work , when the official figures were announced by the relevant govt dept on radio 5 live

Net incoming into the U.K for the last 12 months ....212, 000

polish ...102, 000

Bulgarians and Rumanians .....23, 000...up from 9,000

And a sharp rise in the number of Italians , but the figure wasn't given

That's net migration by the way ,over and above those that have left , which is declining

That's 2 full wembleys in 12 months

But this rate is needed to support an ageing and work shy indigenous population

No it's not, the rate is ridiculous and is putting an appalling strain on services which cannot perform at a reasonable level due to over work including schools and hospitals. Don't blame the indigenous population, blame the last few governments for letting so many people in.

I won't pretend to know the numbers that may be sustainable but these seem high and difficult to sustain. Assuming the majority are looking for work a substantial number of jobs must be created in order just to stand still.

paul ... ......do you not realise that allowing people into any country , whether that be oz or the uk , is going to drive wages down .

Could this not be the plan of big business in the western world ? ........left or right of the political system , it don't matter , the govts don't run the show

Do you think Britain or Australia can hang on to its minimum wage , and hard fought terms and conditions , long term for its workers , with the numbers coming in ?

You've lost the plot Paul. A lot of them are sharing houses, working for cash in hand, working for other Polish, Bulgarians Rumanians that have fixed them up with the cashies, not paying taxes, not contributing to the UK's work shy and ageing population one bit. When the work dries up they will be up and off back home, with a bit of luck.

We've seen the same sort of thing here in WA recently. Massive raids on some properties not far out of Perth but far enough for the operators thinking no-one would notice. Great big compound with a couple of mansions on it, owned by a Vietnamese family supposed to be worth millions. Inside the compound there's shacks and sheds set up for workers who shouldn't be here, have no visas, treated like slaves, kept in squalor. It's not the first time the authorities have raided this property but this time they have had all manner of government agencies in there and found buildings put up without permission, electric cables that don't appear on any plans of the electricity company. Lots of illegal immigrants already taken away for deportation.

Tip of the iceberg and there will be a lot more investigations and arrests I reckon. Trouble is tomatoes will soon be very expensive. I hope the land and cops that these people own aren't just going to be left to rot. I suppose it would be well out of the realms of possibility for any of them to think of that before they shut the operation down.
