Changes to APHRA qualification assessment?

Hi,

I feel sick to my stomach! I am really worried, I have only just started the process of getting my skills assessed by ANMAC and I was reading on APHRA website the following information:

In February 2014, the National Board and AHPRA implemented a new model to support the nationally consistent assessment of the qualifications of internationally qualified nurses and midwives.

The assessment decides whether an international applicant has a qualification that matches the standard of (in the National Law this is called ‘substantially equivalent to’) a current graduate of a Board-approved program of study.

I have a DipHe in Adult Nursing now as far as I was aware they assessed the diploma as an equivalent to the qualification needed to register as an RN in Australia, which would attract 15 points on a visa. Is this going to change now? Does anyone know if this will change my entitlement to work as a registered nurse in Australia? I don't want to spend lots of money and stress going through the process of trying to get skills assessment etc if in the end I left with heartache knowing that my qualification will not entitle me to work as an RN in Australia.

Thanks in advance for anyone's guidance

I think you are confusing two matters. AHPRA and the points for a Visa are two different things.

Currently a UK Diploma is acceptable for AHPRA

A UK Diploma is still only worth 10 points like it has for a long time. The only way to get 15 points is to have a Degree. The issue with how AHPRA compare your education level is not a factor in the skills assessment. A diploma is a diploma and a degree is a degree.

Currently as it stands you can still work as a nurse in Australia.

Hi there,

I was just wondering, does AHPRA assigns a case manager while assessing international qualified nurse application? Previously when my senior applied, all of them got a case manager, but in my case I don't have yet. I applied in 4th of April 2014 and by the end of April submitted all of the supporting documents. Whenever I give them a call, they just say that documents are complete and on the process of qualification assessment. They can't give me any time-frame and just say it usually take 1 month. I am confused....

Im not sure that is correct as when I look on the aus immi site it states this:( I agree however a diploma is most certainly not a degree however as stated on the immi site it appears it is comparable NOT equivalent)

Bachelor Degree

To receive 15 points for having at least a Bachelor degree, you must have met the requirements for an award of Bachelor degree by an Australian educational institution or your qualification must be considered as at least comparable to a Bachelor level at Australian standards.

For example a Diploma in Nursing completed in the United Kingdom is generally considered by the relevant assessing authority as comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree.

Wow, you are right. They've updated the site. I have never seen that. There have been nurses on here stating they could only get 10 points but that's great if it now states that. Perhaps there has always been misunderstanding towards it.

Either way, you can still work as a nurse in Oz with a diploma. Healthcare Australia (nursing agency) stated today via email that Diploma registered nurses were having their application assessed on a case by case basis, but still no one has ever been refused. After all, like immi say it is deemed comparable.

If an assessing authority (such as ANMAC) state that your qualification is comparable to an Australian bachelor degree then you're pretty safe to go ahead and claim points for a bachelor degree. Immigration policy specifically mentions UK nursing diplomas as one such example where this often occurs. Another example would be accountants that have CIMA qualifications or similar.

Mummatothebear I applied to ahpra before I had my skills assessment back as I knew it was taking ages but I honestly don't know whether it will make any difference! It may even be better to wait until things settle down and they clear the backlog. Tbh its one big mess at the moment and no one has got a clue when they might get registration. :(

  • 1 month later...

Hi I've applied for my nursing registration but I'm worried because I have read different things regarding having a nursing diploma! I'm a qualified paeds nurse but specialised in neonates and have my intensive care training and 3 years experience. Are they reviewing everyone individually as I have my anmac approval and don't fancy having to wait another year and do a degree in the process! Thanks Danielle

Hey there, could I be a nuisance and ask for the link to the paragraph on the immi site that talks about the UK nursing diploma being equivalent to an Oz Bachelor degree. I hadn't realised that this might be the case and this could mean my son simply needed to sit the IELTS and not go through the 457 process that he currently is. Pity our migration agent did not point this out a couple of months ago :(

The actual problem is not the Diploma. It is the transcript and the number of hours of study in the pharmacology etc. Diploma holders can still register and AHPRA will recommend to do the bridging course. It cost 10000 and it is available in Australia only.Soon in UK the education providers can start a Bridging course company to make money. It is all about money and time.

Hello

As a degree trained district nurse I'm awaiting the completion of my ANMAC assessment and am about to apply for AHPRA. I thought this would be a fast part of the process but reading everyone's posts I think I'm wrong!!

I need to find out if I can go ahead and submit an EOI when I haven't completed my AHPRA?

Thank you

Hi there,

I am a UK Diploma trained nurse ( a 3 year university course ) and I was assessed by ANMAC as having equivalent to a degree. But, I am still waiting for a decision from AHPRA since February this year.

Has anyone, who has a nursing Diploma, recently succesfully registered with AHPRA please? As I am starting to get very worried.

Thanks
