Hi all.

I have been reading this forum for a few months but only just registered. I didn't join before as my questions were answered. It was about the trepidation and nervousness that people feel before emigrating. We felt awful, and wondered if it was the right choice, we knew it was the right thing to do as we backpacked from 2005-08 spending two years in Oz.

So now we find ourselves in the best city in the world-Melbourne. Only now we don't think it is Australian enough (no banana trees in my garden). Only kidding.

We love it, so my advice to any feeling a bit of trepidation, just do it!! Give a go. the hardest thing is saying goodbye to loved ones, but they are only 24 hours away. The next hardest thing is find a house so we are just house sharing in South Yarra at the moment.

Anyone else in Melbourne from Stoke-on-Trent? I made oatcakes last week and they were delicious!! Ok, here is a long shot, any Port Vale fans?

Are there any get togethers by ex pats?

South Yarra is a lovely area, I wish we could have bought a flat there.

Originally from Stafford, nearby, and really miss my Staffordshire Oatcakes! Not a Port Vale fan I'm afraid, but there's a pretty famous one on his way to Melbourne soon .... Robbie W tickets went on sale recently ....

Hi MV, I'm a Stokie, originally from Tunstall, lived in Etruria, Shelton and Longton but now in Perth. Hubby is from Stafford. He makes our oatcakes, miss them soooo much!

My lady is from Sandyford, I'm from Kidsgrove, but lived in Rode Heath for the last two years until last month. I met a few Stokies in Perth a few years back.

  • 2 weeks later...

Now I have work it is starting to come together. I met a Scottish lad on Chapel Street a few weeks ago, and met many folks playing football in South Yarra last week.

Well, a few Fridays ago I was walking down Chapel Street when I heard a voice shout "Woody", it was the Scottish lad in a pub so we joined him for drinks.

On a train today heading into the city another voice shouted "Woody". It was lad I played football with last week. So it is nice that we now bump into people that we know here and there. It is so good to make contacts and mingle. It is difficult on first arrival but we are getting there. :-)

Hi, my family and I arrived in Melbourne at the end of January so know exactly what you mean. We started off in Melbourne, then moved down to Frankston but have recently got a rental in Mornington. Its beautiful here and I love it, but as you say the hardest thing is leaving family and friends behind. I've found that finding new people to socialise with is the next hardest thing! We are originally from Burntwood, near to Lichfield, so not too far from Stoke-on-Trent. I'm sorry I'm not a Port Vale fan but my other half is an avid Everton fan and is seriously missing his footy! (He refuses to call it soccer) . So far I haven't found any get togethers but if I hear of any I will let you know.
