Lindor
Do you have an Australian license?
Alison Hutchinson
No and my family are here on a 457 visa so we may have to go back to the UK.
Keith and Linda
I think you need an actual resident and a residential address in the UK for the license to be valid, but check with the DVLA and see what they have to say. If you do could you post the results on here for everyone's information. Cheers Keith.
Lindor
So you don't drive in Sydney? You could have your mail redirected.
Alison Hutchinson
I will Keith. I do drive in Sydney but because of my visa I can't change to an Aussie licence until I've been here 6 months which is soon! I have my mail redirected at the mo but that expires in August! I'm sure there will be a simple solution I'm just a natural worrier lol
Lindor
I applied for a WA license which arrived the day after I left for a UK holiday. When I tried to hire a car, one firm wouldn't let me because I had an Australian address and a UK license which they said wasn't valid! I rang the DVLA who said when a foreign license is issued the UK one is cancelled! Presumably, if I moved back I can just apply for a new license, hopefully without taking another driving test! Alison Hutchinson
I think Linder that's my main worry another test!!!
Keith and Linda
Just looked at DVLA if you get an Aussie license you can just exchange it when/if you return to the uk, you have 5 years to do this once in the UK, not like the 3 months when you get PR here in OZ. So should be no worries.

jonbclark
When I asked about renewing my uk one while I was living in sydney I was told that I couldn't renew it while living abroad (albeit temporarily) I now have a nsw licence and my uk has expired. If I go back then I guess I'll cross that bridge. I also had the problem while in the uk on holiday of trying to hire a car with a uk licence (it was still valid then) and an australian address, took a while in the rental office for them not to charge me a very large deposit..... srh82
Just pick up the phone (skype) to the DVLA and see what they suggest! You may be able to avoid the cost of an Australian license and hassle of swapping it back to a UK one in the future!
Guest
Your photocard part of your UK licence is what has most likely expired. This has to be renewed every 10 years with new photo when residing in the UK. The paper counterpart would not expired I'd have thought and is still valid till the date given on it. If you move overseas technically your UK licence will still exist but as you are not resident with a current UK address the photo part will lapse and be out of date. pob
Get your mum to fill out change of address form for your driving license and send it off for you. Don't forget to send her a box of chocolates.
