BradfordBull Posted January 17, 2014 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Hi Folks, We've just got our migration agent confirmed and sorted our finances out and we've come to the conclusion Bunbury/surrounding area's ticks all our boxes...We'll be landing with a 7 year old and a baby (tell me about it!) - and a dog. My partner is a surgical nurse at a teaching hospital in the UK and is keen to kick on with her career - does anybody have any experiences with the hospitals in Bunbury? She's worried that she might be better off to at a hospital near the bigger city's. As she has the 'proper' career (I make TV shows) - she takes the priority when settling on professional matters. I've read that the South West Campus Hospital has/is about to build new wards for cannot source any testimony from any current nurses? W/r my career needs - as long as I finish before five and there's a pub nearby - I'm sorted. (is there a tea-time craic about or do the lads congregate around the BBQ?!) sussex boy Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Hi there, cannot complain about Bunbury, we moved from Alice Springs just over a year ago. We settled in well but had visited the area and knew it well. There are a couple of media companies here, prime media and GWn have offices here so might be an angle. There are two large hospitals here side by side and a teaching wing , they service the SW so both a reasonable size. Good luck wherever you choose. We are also focusing on my career when it comes to areas to settle, we are looking at WA as there is a new hospital being built in Perth. Bunbury looks lovely! My hubby quite likes the idea of me earning the crust and him looking after kids 1 and 3! I can just imagine the carnage! Great to hear about the Hospital - it would have been a deal breaker if it was a small one. W/r career - my partner is keen to develop further and isn't looking to kick back once we get there. She currently has 10 years exp on a HD surgical ward and would like to get to ICU level. I'd love to hear from any Nurses in Bunbury... Interesting to hear about the media companies based in Bunbury - I presumed they'd be in Perth. Great news though - looks like I can share my boring, endless minor celebrity anecdotes on more victims! The more I read on Bunbury - the more I want to set off in the morning. I've been checking realestate.au out and East Bunbury looks nice but so does Dalyellup. Anyway, we're at the start of this process - Paitence!!! I lived in Thornton and left there in 1963, appropriately enough, moved to Bunbury some 3 months after arriving in Australia. There's still a good few pubs in Thornton, not as many as ten years ago - but it's still a good night out. Thornton itself is nearly upto Denholme gate - new housing estates have cropped up but it's still a nice spot. I'm a little stuck with things to tell you about as 1963 is testing my local history knowledge but here goes...The Odeon is finally getting a make over (did you see the Beatles there??) - Speedway is supposed to be coming back (again) to Odsal Stadium. Thanks mate!!:notworthy: That viaduct was in a scene from "Last Of The Summer Wine, Three Men And A Mangle"; my Mum sent a dvd of it. Also, used to 'tickle' trout in the beck. Remember the Odeon and Gaumont, and the Alhambra. Loved going to the speedway and watching Bradford rugby league team at Odsal, and going to Valley Parade and Spion Kop for the soccer. We have been living here for almost five years and I work at the local hospital. It too has recently had expansion and new wards, departments. It has gone from a country hospital to a almost three hundred bedded hospital. I know Bunbury is expanding and has a HDU which I've heard is very nice to work at, but can be quiet at times. One of the problems here is all the really acute care happens in the main hospitals in Perth. All trauma goes straight to Perth and if your looking for any Cardio/Neuro/ that too is based in Perth. Not too sure about Bunbury but I know Rockingham has had a drive on for more surgeries, we have only started doing orthopedicts and GI surgery. Which is making the hospital busier, it is difficult for this area to get the doctors needed to come out of the main city areas, but the services are defiantly needed and will come in time. Spent Australia Day down there as prefer the fireworks there than Perth and stayed overnight. I like the city. It is compact. The beaches are within easy walking distance of the CBD. The area where the old jetty used to be has been totally transformed over the years as the port has been relocated. Called Marsden Point, a lot of fine houses have been built. Only regret I didn't buy one when the area was being refurbished. Now rather expensive. But the area has really added value to the city. More protected beaches in Katoomba Bay, a short walk from this development. Still some reasonable in today's terms property about. Shame a Greek fish and chips place used to frequent ten years ago no longer there. Best fish and chips in Australia, at the time, in my view. Didn't spot one at all this time. There are three Indian places on the main street, which don't recall any ten years back. Anyway the centre has an easy going ambiance. There are a few rough areas. Carey Park is well known. Known as Scarey Park by some. We drove around but barley saw a sole. Withers used to have a reputation as well. Not sure the latest on that. We did note that the youth appear no longer to drive up and down Victoria Street displaying an abundance of tough guy type coolness. Not sure what happened there. There are housing estates in Australind for example that look very decent for those liking such developments. An easy drive into Bunbury. Not forgetting an easy two hour and a bit drive, or train and coach (bus connections) Only about an hour to Margaret River as well. Can't fault it really. Although it is a smallish city. Night life options are limited for those wanting that. Walking in the city on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend was struck by how few folk where about at 9 pm. The real estate is far better value than the metro area, which makes my head spin in disbelief with regard to the prices. Yesterday's local paper, The West Australian, as a headline story, reaffirmed Perth is the fourth most expensive city in the world. Unbelievable. Anyway pulled out of going further with the purchase of a particular house in East Bunbury, a stroll to the beach and CBD. Reason being discovered rather late in the day that it was Heritage Listed. I have several other places of interest, though more expensive and will take another trip down there in a month when partner returns. We do have a few uncertainties with moving to Bunbury which I won't voice here, but while other things remain at metro prices, housing is the clincher along with the delights of the South West. Hi BradfordBull I managed to obtain my job through a emigration exhibition, WA Health & SA Health were there recruiting and I pretty much got the job right there and then. This was five years ago, But you can contact the hospital direct and I know there are recruitment "pools" for the Fiona Stanley hospital. Which consists mostly of UK nurses. If you contact the hospital direct I would advise to have you AHPRA registration sorted or in the pipeline at least. Agency's are not really helpful from my little experience with them, but Nurse west is a nurse bank system where you are employed by WA Health, that the hospital's will try and use first. Agency nurses seem to be used and abused here, cancelled at sort notice and sometimes told to go home during the shift! You can also get contracts that are internal as a pool nurse, where you have a set amount of hours and the hospital has to honour it wether they need you or not, in this case you will be expected to work in all areas of the hospital. Paediatrics being included in this as Australia has no specialised training for paediatrics. When I moved out only Mental health nurse were getting relocation costs as they are really in demand, but no don't think you will get any help if you a general nurse. Also I would advise you to make sure you have a signed contract of employment before you come.
