Would Melbourne be better than Brisbane

Hi,

Some advice please!

We recently returned from Brisbane after a year and a bit. I liked many aspects of Brisbane life but it wasn't great for my work and I found myself getting a bit tired of it as it felt like a country town. Although beautiful beaches etc of course but I felt like my world had shrunk to the gympie road the chermside mall! I have been wondering whether somewhere a bit more cosmopolitan would suit us better like Melbourne but I'm worried about property prices and whether it would be as family - friendly as Brisbane ? I have two young children. A perspective on Melbourne (or Sydney) vs Brisbane would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, I'm a solicitor. I specialise in financial services so Brisbane not great but I know Melbourne and Sydney would be ok for me. Our visas are based in my husbands job which is in demand in oz. I was on maternity leave whilst we were in Brisbane so it wasn't so much an issue but I would like to know I could go back to work again when the time arises - I have just had a baby girl so it won't be for another year.

Cant really comment. Its what you make it, its certainly has a zing to it lets put it that way.

The only place I've been in Australia where i cant really see my self living based on the "life style" is Christmas Island and Darwin, but thats me and to be honest although I think im a good judge i don't think spending a few day or weeks anywhere is really enough to base an opinion on. Although 10 mins on Christmas Island was enough lol.

See i LOOOOOVE the gold coast but how quickly would i get board of it if i lived there?

Hi, thanks. We lived in London for 13 years before moving out. I'm hoping Melbourne will have something of the bars and restaurants and theatre of London, the sandy beaches or Brisbane but without being unaffordable...don't want much do I? I wish we'd tried another city before moving back to the UK.

I am living on the newport side of the bay,,,,I think the grass is greener on the other side..!!

ie Brighton , St Kilda etc...same distance in to town but over here in Altona, it seems a bit quiet.. there seems to be a lot more happening over there.

I have lived in Melbourne and Sydney and prefer Melbourne hence been here a long long time now. Like the climate, like the fact that its so cosmopolitan, like the two bays. Just has everything for me and more. My friend's daughter is a solicitor with one of the large banks and she would not live anywhere else, her brother is a medical consultant and he says Melbourne is the place to be. My daughter is a teacher but works in business and she loves Melbourne they live very close in though. Rents are falling in Melbourne presently due to over supply so you should be able to find suitable accommodation easily. Its not everyone's cup of tea but over four million live here and they all seem to like it.

It is a large sprawling city though, the size of greater London so you have a lot of different areas to live in, there are the hills, the sea, something for everyone. Also there are quite a lot of Brits about.

Join up with the life in Victoria forum and you can get the perspective of recent arrivals and information about the areas they live in.

One of my good friends moved to Brisbane 16 years ago and she has moaned every day that she wants to move back to Melbourne, the whining Aus and her husband will not move back. She would move back in a heartbeat as she says its just not the same up there.

Depends on area of Melbourne

But for example St James street of Brisbane is like Chapel and Toorak streets South Yarra, High Street Armadale, or Glenferrie road Malvern and Hawthorn.

Work wise the CBD is one of the easiest working environments to work in.

More people should try Melbourne before giving up and heading home. It has a totally different feel to Brisbane or Sydney. Yes it does have a long winter but it is fairly mild. It has a great arts, theatre, culinary and sporting culture. There are lots of brilliant wineries to visit. It has ski resorts for winter and beaches for summer.

I think you make a good point, I have always said had we landed in Melbourne instead of Perth we would not have had a fraction of the difficulties we have had. It is more friendly, more European, my cultured and as you say there are plenty of diverse attractions.
