"When getting an Australian passport becomes a kafkaesque nightmare"

Nothing bizzare or odd about it. Every country makes checks on people before issuing a passport.

I have found the Oz passport people to be fantastic - they did mine within 15 hours of becoming a citizen.

Why the guy in the article didnt just go to the passport office rather than a post office is pretty stupid

The UK laws are exactly the same and probably other commonwealth countries too.

In the UK, if you are born in the UK after 1st Jan 1983, you have to prove one of your parents was legally settled in the country or a british citizen for you to be a citizen.

This is not unique to Australia and not usually difficult to provide the evidence.
