simmo
73 million it says in the article. Good luck paying for that! No!! more people means more prosperity (apparently) They will all be prime working machines of strong moral fibre, who will not get old, have babies, or be a drain on resources in any way. And if they do get old or sick, have babies, draw pensions ...,... we just bring in more. more people more tax payers to pay for it all.. simples.. paulv
An ageing population needs more and more working age people to pay for it's health and social care. It's simple demographics. The migration report earlier in the week highlights that the indigenous UK population is currently only paying for 89% of the costs of the NHS/Welfare etc so we are in the situation that we need working age migrants to help us pay for what we already have. The dilemma is though finding work for all those folk so they can pay taxes and not just be more of a load on the welfare state.
Gbye grey sky
The dilemma is though finding work for all those folk so they can pay taxes and not just be more of a load on the welfare state. It is a truism that more people creates more demand and as long as that demand is serviced internally rather than by imports as now then finding jobs is not the issue. That is why UK service sector leads the way to a large extent. Finding space and managing infrastructure is a bigger problem. The population rise projection though is largely down to assuming more folk living longer and that will need more taxpayers in the future if it comes to pass. Withso many people living less healthy lifestyles in modern Britain though I doubt that overall average life expectancy will keep rising despite medical advances. All projections are just guesses when all is said and done.
