What needs doing to ship a pet?!

Hi everyone, been trying to work out what I have to do and when I have to do it for shipping my dog (and possibly cat depending if she is still alive - she is pretty old).

We we have a pet passport for the dog, rabies shot done, no bloods taken after though. What else needs doing before he can set off and how soon in advance should we/can we do it? He is microchipped too.

As as for my cat, she hasn't had anything done.

Anyone got any words of wisdom for me?

Hey Kooky

If you are not going for a year or 2, then you need to do nothing right now.

what you do need to do - difficult i know - is try to predict when you are going and then 6-12 months before that get the pets a rabies vaccination each and rabies blood sample so they can serve minimum quarantine time.

If there is a chance that you may need to go with less than 6 months notice then get the rabies blood sample done now and then at least it is done.

I hope that helps, but if you need anything else then let me know.

Ok we have done this with our mutt for a few countries.

Once he is microchipped, you can get a rabies jab done, then 48 hours later get your TITRE test done.

Now his rabies jab is good for at least a year, might even be three. But you want the antibodies swimming around his blood stream in good numbers and a dog might fail this after 9 months, his antibody count may not be high enough. My dog failed after six months.

So after 48 hours he will have lots of antibodies doing the back stroke in his veins. get the TITRE test done. I think it has to be a special lab but I'm not sure as your vet on that one.

You can overlap the tests, and they remain concurrent that way so if you over lap the TITRE tests he should fly through. You can do this for years.

Now it may just be a rumour that quarantine might be changing a bit here in OZ. They might be closeing all the quarentines down and just building a big one in Melbourne, and changing the rules a bit and letting the dogs and cats only have to do ten days instead of the mandatory thirty.

This is in the future, not now.

Right - The quarantine has been reduced to 10 days for pets landing after 03rd February. There are a whole bunch of new rules, but the important bits are - it will be cheaper to fly your pets(less quarantine time and no £100 vet fees at the airport in UK), the pets will need to have the rabies blood sample 180 days before they fly (rather than current 150 days) - so you need to start preparing them at least 7 months before you want the pets to fly, the rabies blood sample is now valid for 24 months, so get it done nice and early.

This is great news for the pets and owners alike.

Lots of rabies vaccines in UK are 3 year vaccines. So starting early is the key. The blood samples now last 2 years (rather than 1 year as previous) and so starting early is the key to making sure your pets are not stuck in UK waiting to come out

how long after having the rabies jab do we need to get the blood samples done ? we are hoping to ship our dogs out in January

Hi there

We've just seen this:

http://www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity/cat-dogs/step-by-step-guides/category-3-step-by-step-guide-for-dogs

Hoping to move to Australia later this year bringing my pet dog. However i note that on the above step by step guide there is the following statement: "Dogs must have a current rabies vaccination record at the time of export that shows that an inactivated vaccine was given when the dog was at least 90 days of age." As rabies vaccines are not routine in the UK, my dog has never been vaccinated for this. Does this prevent her from coming with me even if I have her vaccinated, blood tested, chipped etc. from now?

thnx!

Hey Sijax

I am not sure what your questions is, but good news anyway.

If you want to get your pet a microchip, then rabies vaccination and then blood sample then your pet can fly 1980 days -24 months after the date of the rabies blood sample.

So that fact it is not done already is no dramas - unless you want to go soon!

Have a look here for a slightly shorter version of the requirements http://www.petairuk.com/australia

Aaahhhh just had a call from the vet - my dog has failed the rabies test! He has to have another jab! So anyone wondering when to do it - do it as soon as you can incase it is the same for you! He isn't going to be ready for when we plan to go now but I am hoping we will be able to get my mum to have him for a bit.
