Hi,

I will be travelling from Nov in and around Sydney and wanted to experience NYE in sydney, but I am finding that I may have left it late to arrange accommodation that's not really expensive. Any ideas or advice would be great :)

Depends what you mean by "expensive" - there are PLENTY of places available for NYE and the dates around it on airbnb.com for well under $100 (up to $$$$ of course!), all around the city.

You might not be able to get something super-central within your budget but public transport runs until late on NYE so you can cast your net widely. It's only around 15 mins from Chatswood to Milsons Point (for Kirribilli vantage points, for example) on the train so you could consider something like this https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/1588875, or, even closer (by train or just about walkable), this place in Willoughby https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/1040278. Both less than $100/n. Ok so they're not the most 'tourist' of areas but the accommodation looks ok.

Have a look at http://www.sydneynewyearseve.com and http://www.131500.com.au/events/upload/docs/NYE%202012%20Transport%20Guide%20A4%20D2.pdf for general planning. I'd suggest that you decide where you you want to watch the fireworks from, look into public transport options from there and then that'll give you your search area for accommodation.

Whatever you do, if you want to get a good vantage point in one of the prime spots you'll have to get there EARLY! It's totally worth it though, we spent one NYE down at Kirribilli and being so near to the bridge you can *feel* the fireworks as they explode. Amazing.

Why don't you make it interesting. Rather than find hotel accommodation, have you considered on-road travel during your time in Sydney? It would also definently tie in well with Lizzie's point of trying to get to a vantage point really early, whilst spending the night nearby in your vehicle.

HI we went in 2010, it was amazing, we got accomodation at about this stage I think, unfortuantly I cant remember the place , it was out of town in the suburbs but right next to a train station and the trails run very late that night, I would recommending looking for a motel in the suburbs. We did it in style, once in a life time thing on one of the boats in the harbour... was amazing

Aghh, same boat. Haven't been very successful so far in securing accommodation. I'd prefer self catering apt as 4 adults travelling. City is a bust. Be happy to stay elsewhere within reasonable commute of the harbour but I don't know Sydney that well &/ what suburbs to look out for? Most places won't consider bookings <1 week during peak season. I only got my flights a few weeks back when work confirmed time off so unfortunately not all of us have the luxury of booking WAY in advance.
