Hi Donna and welcome to the group. You can be assured that you won't have to justify leaving Australia here and although we all have different reasons for leaving (or wanting to) you will find people here that understand yours.

Whereabouts in Australia are you?

I've just moved back to Scotland after 5 years in Perth.

We are in Melbourne at the moment :)

I think if I'd have stayed in Melbourne I would have ended up going home. Now I'm in Cairns I love it.

I liked Cairns too but anywhere is idyllic when you aren't working, especially when you are staying in a 5* hotel with an expense account :)

I have wondered sometimes if we had gone somewhere other than Perth whether it would have turned out differently, Melbourne is the place I have wondered about BUT when you here others stories on here it seems those that don't like it have similar reasons and to be honest I just wasn't prepared to risk it - better the devil you know. If I didn't have my son to think about I may have done, or more likely given NZ a try. I did miss the snow so much!!

Hear hear. We did not have an expense account but being on holiday does offer a different freedom :)

Long and short of it all is we cannot afford Australia in the long run. Don't know if it is the same for all states but houses are very expensive, job security appears to be non existent and healthcare as we get older becomes quite unaffordable.

Lots leave Perth too, 2 pals of mine left, one back to UK, other to townsville, another pal left perth 5 yrs ago lives in surfers paradise. both keep saying I would do well and should visit both over east. They both have businesses there. very tempting, I do like Perth but somewhat over it, still life in me yet to explore.

Hi and welcome Donna. We're in Melbourne too. My Australian partner loves it, but I've never got the place. Out of interest why has it not worked for you?

Hi EndlessWinter, various reasons. But the most practical one is that it is far too expensive for us. By the sounds of it, Melbourne seems cheaper than Perth but I reckon we will still need to triple our UK mortgage payments (after taking into account exchange rate and wage comparison etc.) to be able to afford a similar house here and we are not prepared to as we are not in our twenties anymore ;)

Yeah that's really the bottom line for us to - we went from a £400 a month mortgage in the UK, living in a desirable area very close to a mainline station and no more than 30 min commute to work and ended up with a $3500 mortgage in Perth in an 'up and coming area' 5km from the station so copping $5 a day parking fees too (I did cycle when I could!)

People say I'd rather be poor in Australia but until you're living it day in day out you don't realise what you're going to miss. I think if we'd been rich in Perth we could have made it work - socialised more, took up new hobbies, bought a boat even! But as it was we were left with relentless bills and memories of how life used to be - no amount of sunshine made up for that and when your only option is to go to the beach it quickly becomes undesirable!

That is so true lady rainicorn about the beaches ...when we first moved we were at the beach all the time and loved it then slowly you are like "argh no really" my mum n dad noticed this as well they have come over every yr and my dad said to me you dont go out as much in the sun n to the beach why ..... my reply when you live here it is so different gone are the days where you act like the mad english man who sees sun and is like woo who lets go instead you are more careful and aware of being burnt .... my dad is a sun worshiper and never wears suncream :chatterbox: ...... and like you we have stared to miss the colder weather , i never in a million yrs did i think i would say that lol ..... but a big thing for me to is that i had chemo last yr and i am now sun sensitive i have to wear factor all the time which is a good thing but i can not burn at all i have alot higher risk of getting skin cancer  because of it .....

Also i agree with the mortgage ours went from about the same as yours , but we sadly sold our house in the uk , so that is one thing my hubby is worried about because we are looking at going back in 2 yrs by then he will be 47 so will we get a mortgage ...... so i am hoping that we can save like mad and make money on our house here ... although we payed $500,000 for it only 18mths ago so fingers crossed they go up abit more ....yikes ...

And donna it is awful to feel like we do but guess what we at least gave it a shot and didnt just talk about it we came we saw and we didnt like very much is all

lots of love

em x
