I still look at the BBC news website because it is better than the Australian ones. I do take an interest in what is going on in the UK but after 3.5 years and a change of government, it feels increasingly irrelevant. I watch British drama TV programmes because they are generally better than their Australian equivalents (with some notable exceptions). But after a while, I find I am watching more and more of the Voice, Masterchef, Block, RBT, Border Security rubbish too. I also like to eat flavours from home - baked beans, pork sausages, marmite, etc. But at the same time, I find that my cooking has far more Asian and middle eastern influence than before I moved here.

 

I don't think keeping in touch with home is about dooming yourself to failure - rather it is about making a gradual transition from being British, to being a British ex-pat, to being an Australian of British heritage.
