Decent Job Offer?

I've been offered a position with a company in Melbourne and I'm wondering if people think that the offer is decent?

I've been offered $140k + super, so a $154k package after super rises in July. The company will pay visa costs for my girlfriend and I but not any relocation costs.

To give a bit of background, in the UK I earn £67k a year basic with car allowance, bonus, private healthcare. All in I'm earning about £76k a year. As a 29 year-old with no kids, living in Glasgow, I have a pretty good life on that kind of money!! I go out for dinner at least once a week, spend £5-6k on my annual holiday, go weekends away several times a year, personal trainer twice a week...

If I move to Melbourne on that kind of money will I need to take a massive drop in lifestyle or do you think I could live a similar lifestyle as in the UK? My girlfriend will also be earning about $50k once she finds a job!

Thanks!

Just looking at your salary and comparing it to what you are currently on, then it is a drop and especially when considering the costs of Melbourne versus Glasgow as well as the drop in buying power.

But the income and the combined income, are comfortable and you certainly will not be wondering where the next meal is coming from. You need to decide if other factors, such as the experience, will make up for the finances. But if it were 100% a financial move then it doesn't make sense. Actually I am not sure 100% financial moves ever make sense.

Very hard to advise given what are we to bench mark against? What vocation?

$140k could be ok but could be poor when benchmarked respective of its position. My EA is on $150k (before super).

Not paying relocation seems cheeky if the position is senior.

It's for a Senior IT Security Consultant position. I specialise in ethical hacking and have the CREST qualification that is very sought after in both the UK and Australia.

What Rupert said

I think you're being lowballed tbh. You will notice a drop in standard of living compared to what you're used to. mainly because Melbourne is much more expensive than Glasgow

It's decent money - but you are on good money currently

Is it worth it to move? Depends how much you want the adventure/chance at a different life. As a singleton you're not going to be struggling on that and you're plenty young enough to go and do whatever you like in the future, so if you go for a couple of years even you're not going to cost yourself much and who knows what could happen?

Agreed. But you'll still live comfortably - don't expect to be rich in Melbourne on that kind of salary, it sounds loads but decent accomodation, holidays etc costs a lot here. Your holiday allowance will probably be going from 30 days to 20 days PA so you have to factor that in......

These were the rates in our companies starting range. Did not have access to more detailed positon descriptions, but expect it would be meaningful to you?

They represent base only and have substantial super and bonus on top (45% of additional benefits).

Most employers use Mercer to bench mark against the market. Perhaps you could ask how they bench mark to the market? If they cant answer it perhaps someone with access to Mercer reporting could offer it?

PM me and we will have a chat.

I was in a similar position to you last year, and work in the IT industry (I may also be able to probably guess who the company is)

Also if it was me I would not except the first offer. I would explain to them that even on that money you will be worse off, from my experience companies never factor in the cost of living. You need to stress that you are going to be losing your private medical and dental (which you need out here even with Medicare) so that's additional cost, and in general Australia is a lot more expensive than the UK and you are not going to more to the other side of the world to be worse off.

Put it another way if you moved from Glasgow to London on the same UK salary you would probably have to sacrifice some things due to the high cost of living. It's just the same over here (but probably a bit more expensive compared to London)

You are also going to be losing money just by simply moving abroad, here are just a few things for personal experience

Selling your car quickly = losing money

Moving out of your house means either giving things away or selling them, which will then need to be replaced in Oz = losing money

You may have to pay out on contracts E.G mobile phone = losing money

My dad always told me you should never be seriously out of pocket just to turn up for work on Monday morning (apart from getting there and maybe buying a pair new work boots)

I would ask for some form of relocation package you will need $10,000 to cover your flights, shipping container, AQIS fees etc. Most companies will put you up somewhere for a month as well. Sustain is right as well, it does seem very cheeky not to offer some form of relocation package for a senior position.

HOWEVER

I went through all of the above and in the long run it is worth it for the some of the following reasons

My quality of life is far better and I only work a 40 hour week as opposed to a 60 hour (officially 40 hrs) week back in the UK. Aussie culture has a far better work life balance ethic to it than the UK. You don't feel you have to put lots of extra hours just to keep senior managers happy, it is expected that you have the weekend off over here. So for that thing alone I would not get to hung up on chasing the pound to dollar salary ratio.

Holidays you pay thousands for in the UK (sun and beach) you can do for free here

It is not the UK
