Where to live in Canberra?

Hello, we'd really appreciate some local advice on where to live in Canberra for a year.

My wife and I are moving to Canberra in January. I'm in the British Army and we're coming over for a year while I go to the Defence College in Weston Creek. My wife will be working with her company in central Canberra and probably spending a day or two each week in Sydney.

We're really looking forward to it but trying to work out the balance between inheriting our predecessor's life versus rearranging things to suit us. My predecessor lives in a 4-bed house in Jerrabomberra. It would be easy to take over his house but it strikes me that (a) it's on the wrong side of town for Weston Creek, (b) public transport into town is poor, © it's not particularly close to the centre for socialising and (d) there seem to be some administrative hassles with being in NSW and not ACT.

Can I ask where people would suggest living? We don't need a 4-bed house, so somewhere smaller and more central would be fine. Key criteria will be making the commute to Weston Creek relatively painless (happy to cycle or run) for me and into the City Centre easy for her. And if there's somewhere nice and green or near a lake that would be awesome! We definitely don't want to be running two cars. I don't know exactly what our rental allowance is but it's currently covering a 4-bed house in Jerrabomberra if that helps.

We'd be really grateful for any advice!

Thanks,

Mark and Beth.

Around the Woden area would probably suit you then. Not far from weston creek & there's buses into the city (blue rapid i think) but not sure how long of a commute that is.

We live in kingston which is about a 10-15 minute drive to weston creek & about 15 minute bus into the city. It's a more expensive area but very good for socialising as there's heaps of Cafe's & bars there & in Manuka across the road.

I'd be looking for somwhere more central. Easy to get around but a car/bike is mandatory in the ACT really. We agist our horse just up Stromlo road just up the road from the college and we commute from Belconnen on the north side daily. Manuka, Forrest, Kingston, Griffith have many units which could be a good choice but there are few bad areas being such an affluent city. Good luck. s

Dont know if you can afford it but I'd be looking at Yarralumla as a first stop, then probably Curtin or possibly Deakin. If you dont have kids then Lyons would probably be OK. I agree about Jerrabomberra - the other thing is that it is right on the flight path for Canberra airport and though you would get used to planes landing in your back yard it is disconcerting every now and again. You probably wouldnt want to be cycling from Jerra to Weston unless you were one of those lycra masochists (however my DH -then 60 - used to cycle from Ainslie to Weston every day and he found that quite do-able given the bike paths but he didnt work full time at the time).

If you can afford it, Quoll's right with Yarralumla, then Curtin and Deakin or even Garran maybe. Otherwise somewhere on the blue rapid route would work, in Woden Valley (you can find the route on the Action website). We're in Isaacs but it's a bit out of the way for public transport and although my hubs cycles the 8 miles to civic not everyone would want to do that! Lyons would be ok, maybe Swinger Hill.
