  1. Hi all

As many of you will remember, in April 2017 Malcolm Turnbull and Peter Dutton announced their Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment Bill, which then failed to pass with the Senate later the same year. The changes included stricter english language requirements and an increase in PR requirement for citizenship by conferral from 1 year to 4 years.

Although I'm not yet able to vote, I kept a close eye on the election and was reading up on any immigration-related statements made by Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten. The whole subject of changes to citizenship and visa pathways has seemed to quieten down for now, but given the election result i'm wondering where this might be on the coalition government's agenda.

There's not an awful lot of discussion online regarding this, aside from an SBS article posted in January which summarises the 2017 bill and gives some insight in to the requirements to pass a similar bill in future.

Would anyone more politically minded than me be willing to share their 2 cents or predictions on whether this is now likely to show it's head again, given the election result? Or is it off the table given their inability to pass it back in 2017.

Yes I wasn’t going to be here on the 26th June, so went on the link to change the date and there was an appointments for the 9th May or else later than 26th June. So thought I’d go for it! I have my test tomorrow! Lots of study tonight 🙂

Wow that's amazing. What a turnaround time!

    Approved: TBC

Ceremony Email / Date : TBC

Wow! Hang on, you changed the test date from 26th June to 9th May? or is that a typo?

You apply independently and link the applications. You can apply from the same immi account though. I applied for myself, husband and son through my account. They would never have done the applications themselves......

That's awesome, thanks for the info. So it doesn't matter which Immi account you use? I'd rather do them through the same one if that's possible. Also, at what point do you get the option to link them? Thanks!

  5. Hi Citizenship Crew

My fiancee and I are both eligible in a few weeks and I'm just getting organised.

My fiancee has been my de facto partner on both my 457 and 186 visas. This may sounds like a real starter question, but is there any way we can submit citizenship applications together, or do we do this independently now via our individual Immi Online accounts?

I notice when reviewing the paper based form we should be listing each other as 'other associated people' as de facto, but other than that is there any option to lodge a joint application?

It's only a minor detail, we're just used to lodging visa apps together!

    Thanks in advance!

The new residence requirements for in the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 mean that applicants will need:

    • four (4) years lawful residence in Australia immediately prior to making an application for Australian citizenship with at least 12 months as a permanent resident, and
    • absences from Australia of no more than 12 months in total in the four (4) years prior to application, and no more than ninety (90) days in the 12 month permanent residency period prior to application.

yes you are right, i just searched and the previous rule has been taken back.

This was a change in law only spoken about (a lot) in the media, but never actually passed in government... thankfully!!!

Hey @millski88 did you see the status change or get the email first? I want to envision mine coming through!

I got two immi grant notification emails with attachments, one for me and one for my partner. I presume because of this my partner doesn't know yet (hehe) so I'm planning on surprising her with it as soon as I knock off today!

Funnily enough my status in immi online did change to 'Finalised' but then changed back to Received... I think it's being processed through the database for the site, as the grant letters appear next to the status of 'Received'... weird.

That seems like an awful lot.

There's an awesome immigration lawyer in Melbourne and you can pay for phone calls with her, 200 bucks for 30 minutes.

I've spoken to her a few times and the advice is always spot on, a lot of inside knowledge and guidance you won't get anywhere else.

30 minutes it a lot longer than it sounds too, so long as you're properly prepared and prioritised with what you're asking.

She used to offer 15 minutes for $120 or something around that, which it what i went for, but i notice that option has recently dropped off the website.
