  1. We use any old clothes that can't be passed on or donated to any charities as cleaning rags, saves on buying them from Bunnings!!
  2. Hi Paul, I am very sorry to hear of your troubles and really hope that you can get your move planned quickly so that you can move on. We are in the process of moving back too, albeit in different circumstances to you. We have a price for transporting a dog of around $3k so your price seems quite high. Check out Dogtainers they might come in cheaper. Once your dog has had the rabies shot you need to wait 21 days and then they can fly, pick up straight from the airport, no quarantine required. I believe pets can only fly into selected airports in the U.K., Manchester definitely being one of them so you need to check that out. With regards to your container have you thought about a Movecube? We are not using them ourselves as we are shipping quite a bit of furniture but they may be worth a look. There are a few posts on here about them. Check with shipping companies about your bike as they know all of the ins and outs but I thought as long as you have owned the bike for 12 months or more there would be no problem with shipping. We had a quote for my husbands bike and it is around $500 to have it included in our container in a special crate. Also one of the shipping companies in Perth had contacts with a place that transfer clocks from kilometres to miles and get the bike ready for registration on the UK roads, so worth checking that out too. Good luck, I really hope things work out and if you want any more info let me know.
  3. I have spoken to the Dept of Education in the U.K. on this one and they say it can be and is done but the final decision is that of each individual school. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Hi does anyone know if game consoles bought here in Australia (i.e PlayStation, Xbox) work on U.K. televisions?? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. We hail from Yorkshire too, though not necessarily going back there. Whereabouts are you from?
  8. Hi LKC, Yes I think that you are right with the dates and school years. We are considering this also. Our son is about to finish Y8 and our daughter Y6. So if we moved to the UK say around Feb or March next year they should go into Y9 and Y7, however this then means that they have missed a full 6 months of that year and they may find it hard to catch up, particularly with Y9 as I believe subject choices are made in Y10 (?) so we propose for them to go into their current years and then start years 7 and 9 in September. They are both June birthdays so both very young in their school years here anyway. As they have never been to school in the UK this will not be a problem with friends etc as they don't have any.....yet!!. Lots to think about!
  9. Hi, so sorry to hear about the difficulties you had with illness, it is so hard with no one to support you. We are not back in the UK yet but have started the process. We have been here 9 years, kids 13 and 11 and we are slightly older than you. We don't know where we will move yet, job dependent so can't help you with the school thing. We have been talking about going back on and off for a couple of years but decided we would for definite at the beginning of this year, then we had a 3 week holiday in the U.K. and that pretty much sealed the deal for us. We were barely out of Manchester when we found a lovely country pub, English fish and chips all round....heaven!! I am sure that you, like us will come back from your holiday and start planning the move! Perhaps when your partner gets to the UK on holiday he may change his mind and be happy to move! Our reasons for the move are pretty much the same as you described and the majority of the people who are on this forum often feel the same. Good luck, have a great holiday and let us know how you go[emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. If you are not happy here now you never will be. We have been here 9 years, my husband is 51 and I am 49, our kids are 13 and 11 and we are moving back. Yes, it will be a struggle starting over at our age but we are determined to do it. Our reasons are the same as everyone else's on here, Australia is just not home and never will be. Yes, your move sounds complicated with the business etc but it is possible. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  12. [quote=Can't wait to sit on a couch again soon "Couch" such a good word! Can't wait to do that either, and to wear "trousers" "flip flops" "vest tops" (not all at once obviously!!) and to eat "crisps" and "sweets" Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Agreed, so sick of people trying to negotiate on stuff that is already a good price, or not turning up when they say they will!! Not put any furniture on yet as we want to keep the house furnished until we get an offer, it looks better I think. But I am sure the p@#$ will be taken then. Hopefully we will sell it with the house!!
  14. Thanks @evets. Yes we use drop box, so that is a good idea. I will add the optician records to my list! I think a list of the items goes with the container but I will make a copy too. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Wasn't sure if you could do this or if the new doctor/dentist has to do it. Will definitely check it out, thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Hi, I am compiling a list of paperwork that we might need in the U.K. before our container arrives so needs to go in with our luggage. Please feel free to add anything I have missed: Birth certificates Marriage certificate NHS cards UK tax info NI number etc Children's immunisation records 1 year of school reports Last year of Australian tax return Evidence of no claims for contents, building and car insurance Rabies certificate (dog, not us!!) Container insurance certificate Shipping info and contacts UK driving licences including paper section All passports (!!!) Evidence of deposits from house sale to our U.K. bank. If you think of anything else let me know. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. This is SO true, I have never heard it called tall poppy syndrome but when I tell my hubby this story later he will wholeheartedly agree!! He is in the construction industry and reckons the only workers worth their salt are non Australian's! He loves the Brits and the Irish, SO hardworking! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Hi @Pixie77, yes definitely get passports sorted it is relatively easy and they shouldn't take long. We are moving back too. House is up for sale and I am already stressed because it hasn't sold-4 weeks on the market so I know I shouldn't be worried!! But you will find that once you have made the decision you will just want to move. I would de clutter, I have done this as (a) it gives you a better idea of what you are taking and (b) it is very liberating!! Chess came and did our quote and were fantastic. We are in Perth, not sure where you are but Paul from Chess is great. If you know where you are moving to and don't have a house have a look on rightmove.co.uk you can get a great idea of rentals available. I have also trawled through many posts on here to get hints and tips. It is funny as I was recently looking back at posts from 2007 when we came out here and recognise many user names that were just arriving too and are now on the moving back forum!! Good luck with the house valuation and if you want any further info just PM me.[emoji4] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Hi, we are in the same boat. We will probably rent a holiday let for a couple of weeks here so that we can get rid of stuff and finalise our bills and finances etc. We are doing the same at the other end as we actually don't know where we will be moving to until hubby gets a job. Good luck with the move! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Hi @Bathbound, reckless maybe but so obviously necessary. You practically describe our life to a tee! We have been in Perth 9 years and have the feelings of emptiness and feeling that we are wasting our life here. I am 49 and my husband is 51 and we are heading back to the UK as soon as our house is sold. We have two children aged 13 and 11 and a dog! The thought of staying here much longer terrifies me and the thought of growing old (older) here is just too much! We can't wait to go back and feel that sense of belonging that we are missing right now. I am not saying that we have always been unhappy here as we have had a great family adventure, but the last few years have been hellish. We will be moving to central England somewhere. Some friends back home have said to me "why are you moving, your house looks beautiful" but there is more to life than a beautiful house. We are pretty sure we will get a beautiful house in England and have lush green countryside too!! You will get validation on here but you also for people who will tell you to stay, only you can decide what is right for YOU! We wish you lots of luck with your decision. It has taken us a couple of years to get to where we are now. If you want any advice or help let us know, we have done heaps of research! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. Hi, we have been in Perth for 9 years and are moving back to the UK soon. We have maintained our bank account and had money paid in every now and then from relatives, we have also used it when we have been over for holidays. Will this help our credit rating when we return? Interestingly we had a £6,000 overdraft put in place when our house sale was going through in case we needed extra for moving before the money cleared in the bank and that is still in effect!! They must trust us! Thanks

  24. We checked this out as my husband wants to take his bike with us when we go and it still has some finance left on it and we were told it is not possible and we would be breaking the law by taking the bike out of the country when it is financed in Australia. Below is an extract from the email we received from them. While under finance for security purposes the bike would need to remain in Australia and in your possession. To have the bike relocated to the UK would be a breach of contract. This would be the same if the bike was left in Australia and you were to move to the UK. The contract would need to be paid out in full for you to relocate the bike. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. Hi, just a quick question that I don't know if anyone will know the answer to! My son and I both have phone contracts with Virgin mobile which still have 18 months left to run. Has anyone been able to transfer contracts with a global company like Virgin before or will we just be best to pay out the phone? Just another thing to tick off my check list! Thanks!
