  1. Sounds like a great plan. I love the way you get to organise your move in your own timeframe, instead of being at the mercy of this system. You definitely deserve a pint (or two)
  2. That's good news! - we are 10 days nearer Australia this week (only 500ish more to go for us)
  3. Just a thought on Geoff's car. We are planning on taking our car with us. There is "personal imports option" which means you don't pay import tax. When we have compared prices, selling the car here then buying a replacement, to the cost of shipping. It easily stacks up for us. Best wishes for your move
  4. Test email today is still showing '3rd October 2014' so no movement this week. The new financial year starts on the 1st of July. Can we assume that 2016-17 Migration Program year is now full?
  5. It is frustrating having to queue, then worst still is never knowing how long we will be queuing for. But it’s not really fair to blame the immigration staff. They just work to a goverment “cap” which is currently at 7175 people (not applications) per year. And they simply work pro-rata, and process approximately 600 successful parents per month. There was a recommendation in 2016 to reduce the ‘cap’, which could add years onto the processing time for 173 / 143 visas. (This is perceived as a good way to stop parents applying and save Australian taxpayers money) Unfortunately it is just about politics and we are all at the mercy of The Hon Peter Dutton MP. So as bad as it feels, I am just thankful to be in a 30-month queue. I fear it will be a lot worse for future applicants (and a lot more expensive). But we all share your frustrations.
  6. We have started thinking about logistics. Originally we considered selling everything and just taking a few boxes of sentimental items and clothes, which was very appealing and liberating. But our son was horrified, and so my husband is now planing to take everything, including car, motorbike and kitchen sink. He has experience (through work) of container transport and loading/unloading, so a diy approach is feasible. My only slight concern is about the 'fumigation' process, as my husband says they pump the container full of toxic gas. Anyone know if 'fumigation' will damage household items like soft furnishings? or is this something that happens to all items entering Australia?
  7. Here is a link with info on the medical exam http://www.gdciq.gov.cn/CJSFW/Documents/panel-doctors-instructions.pdf We joke about the counting backwards bit, but it's really the 'unknowns’ that are the most unsettling.
  8. Thank you for sharing this story, it makes me happy to be moving to Australia. I have read that conditions were very tough for many £10 Poms. My husband lived in Australia in his 20's and likes to tell me how he lodged in an old tin hut built for immigrants, which was unbearably hot in the day and cold at night. I wonder how long the queue would be now if they still had £10 tickets?
  9. Thank you Alan for the information. I guess this is still not too bad, considering the recommendations to double the cost of CPVs. Also, do you know if we can change our application midstream from a 173 to a 143, without going to the back of the queue?
  10. Good News! No mention of CPV price rises or changes to the availability of places
  11. Australian budget details are released in 30min (10.30am UK time) We will get to find out what changes will be made to parent visas. Fingers crossed!
  12. Thank you for the udates re. Alan Collet. I have just being reading the 2016 governments inquiry report ‘Migrant Intake into Australia’. Here are a cople of extracts, For full report see http://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries/completed/migrant-intake/report Clearly this is just a report with recommendations, and the government gets to chose if they implement these or not. It is difficult to guess if or how this might affect existing applicant processing times. I just hope they don’t reduce the number 173/143 visas places for 2017/8.
  13. Yes, you are right; this is a pesky visa process, and very frustrating trying to second-guess how this will play-out, while planning the biggest move of out lives. And this is when we are still not even half way through the process. When I first started reading these posts I was surprised at all the references to drinking wine. Now I am starting to understand why! (is it too early for a glass now?). And we still have the infamous form 80 to complete and we have to continue practicing counting backwards in sevens for our medicals. Any changes in next week budget, is going to feel like they just moved the goal posts. And I guess this is a feeling we are going to experience many time in the next two years. I think for us, the overriding factor is knowing that somehow and at some point in the future, our family will be whole again.
  14. I hope so too. We applied for a 173 in April 2016 to spread to cost and so we don't have to sell the house before we actually move. Now I am now worried that even if we beat the price rise on our 173, we might then have to pay much much more for our 173 to 143 visa. I wonder if we can change our application to a 143 midstream, without going to the back of the queue? Also, I guess if anyone who is thinking about applying for a 143 visa, now has 3 days to beat any price rises.
  15. Hi Alan, This is very worrying. They are saying the real cost of each parent moving to Australia is around $300k. With your experience, how do you think they may implement a price increase for 173/143 visas? Do you think this rise will taper in over 2/3 years? Or do you think the second VAC price will just go up in next weeks budget? Clearly you don't wish to alarm anyone, but your best guess would be appreciated. Sue
  16. I am very disappointed with this new visa, I find it difficult to understand why anyone would pay $20,000 for a glorified babysitters visa. I just hope when this is confirmed, in the budget on the 9th, they don't also cancel any existing visas types. What is this new visa supposed to replace? It's unlikely that anyone would leave an existing visa queue for this new visa. My gut-feeling is this new visa is a replacement for the 103 visa.
  17. Hi Everyone, This website has been in incredibly informative and supportive in the short time (1 year) we have been in the parent visa queue. But since the site's re-branding, everything seams to have gone a bit quite (only three posts in a week). Please, please, please keep your posts coming!!! It would be really good to hear from some of the recent visa recipients - Any tips for our first year in Australia? Is there anything you wish you had taken with you but didn't. What's your 'top ten list' of things to do before you leave the UK to make the move go smoothly. Or maybe everyone just needs to say a quick "Hello, we are sill here" Sue
  18. Just a few thoughts about Brexit. There seams to be a strong desire from the UK and Australia to get a quick post Brexit trade deal. From reading what I can find on the internet, this deal would include an agreement for people, and to quote Tony Abbot “Provided people are coming to work rather than to take advantage of social security or health services, Australians should also be free to live in the UK and vice versa.” I wonder if this may end up being like the New Zealand / Australia arrangement, where citizens can move, live and work freely between countries. it would be frustrating to spend years and $$$$ on our visas, only to find a few months later it was all unnecessary. Anyone got a crystal ball?
  19. Hi, Please can anyone help with information. We hold eVisitor (subclass 651) visas which allow multiple entry up to 2025, and since these visas were granted we have also applied for a 173 visas. We are now planning a holiday trip in November. Will our 173 application have automatically cancelled the 651 visas? Do we need to re-apply for eVisitor visas? Any help would be appreciated.
  20. Hi all, Can anyone help with information please. We are applying for a 173 visa, which at current processing times, should be granted in 18 months. How long do we have, from visa grant date, to needing to arrive in Australia? We are just thinking about when to sell our house in the UK. Any thoughts?
  21. Hi Pertenhall, We too are planning our move to the Sunshine Cost, close to Noosa we think, and we plan on renting for the first year. We spent some time there last year and going back for another look in November. We only applied for our visa in March 2016, so we have a long wait yet. Where on the SC are you heading to?
  22. You will be asked to complete a 'form 40' before your 173 is processed (not when you first apply), and I think you may have to do this again when you upgrade to a 143.
