Hi all

Considering a move to Tasmania, and have a job interview with Launceston council. Any thoughts/opinions on suburbs in Launceston? Ones to avoid? Don’t need schools  

The house prices in TAS really appeal and we could release a big amount of cash if we sold here in Melbourne and bought in Tasmania.

of course, that's a no-brainer! I just picked up on the fact that the poster might be thinking this is an occupation in high demand. I'm sure there are still lots of carpenters with years of experience in Australia, and as @Marisawright pointed out, employers have to find a local candidate first before sponsoring.  I work in a TAFE so was just sharing that perspective. In fairness to the young, newly-qualified they've got to start somewhere, after all the OP must have been one once!

I wouldn't put too much hope on this as there are plenty of young tradies coming through TAFE (Trade and Further Education) so wouldn't say it's an occupation in high demand with no-one to fill the roles.

Carpenter is on the occupation list. TRA is the assessing body for your trade. Check out the 2 links below. Not sure if a level 2 would be sufficient. Minimum for a trade cert in Australia is a cert III.

for most occupations only post qualification experience is counted, so if you haven't yet got the qualifications, you would need to factor in getting the required length of experience after you qualify. You don't mention your age? This could be a factor in whether you qualify or not.

She's also a student, business administrator, Beauty therapist, financial planner. Clearly a woman of many talents! Interesting how their website claims 'transparency' yet doesn't actually show 'real' staff!

Agree with the others. You should have updated your address with them when you moved. I managed to defer my payments as I was under the payment threshold, but if I wasn't I would have paid the required amount. My loan has now been written off, due to the length of time I had it. But if you're working and above the payment threshold then you're liable for it.

You'll also need to check if your or your partner's occupation is on the skilled list

School costs aren't  'covered' on a PR visa. Which means you will pay something. Depending on what subjects your son takes the school will charge for them. For example; the school my daughter attends charges around $350 per year for things like newsletters, photocopying, school diary, guest speakers, locker hire etc, then on top of this are the charges per subject, this could be $25 Maths, $150 Food tech, $50 English etc. These charges don't include books either, every year students are issued with a booklist, with what they are required to buy to participate fully in the lesson. So while it's not as much as $5K per year on a temp visa, it isn't free either. Schools are  businesses at the end of the day and each student has an 'account', at least they do in VIC anyway :)

Firstly check to see if your job is on the list. I entered 'consultant' in the search bar and a few options came up. Not sure if these would apply to you. You need to meet the requirements in order to apply for any visa. From what I've seen and read on this forum employer sponsorship is a difficult route, and probably only temporary, which is something forum members would advise against with a family. I wouldn't really have thought there is a desperate need for recruitment consultants. I regularly browse the job sites, such as Indeed, Seek etc and it's not something I've seen a demand for. Lots of recruitment agencies here in Melbourne and probably plenty of people to fill roles.

I thought for jobseeker payments there was a 2 year waiting period? It doesn't say what the length of time is on this page but does say you have to meet the residency requirements.

And I think with the English points, if you're claiming points you have to have taken the test to claim them, just having a UK passport doesn't qualify but hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm this.

Not sure if the Access to higher ed diploma would be recognised here? In order to get what's called Credit Transfers, which means you've completed units as part of another course and want to claim a credit for them, the unit code has to be an exact match to the current unit. So I would say that might be difficult from overseas as the units of study won't match the Australian ones. Maybe send enquiries to a couple of SA unis and see what they say? The TAFE course is an option should she not be able to get into uni straight away. It will take her a bit longer than doing just the degree as the Diploma nursing courses as TAFE are usually 18 months, but it's a pathway. If she did a diploma first then went into the degree she would probably go into the second year of the degree and get credits for the first year, which is what usually happens for Bachelor of Nursing. Not sure if this is the same for Midwifery 

Your wife would be classed as a mature student, so wouldn't necessarily need UK or equivalent quals to get uni, just depends on each uni's entry requirements. I'm doing a uni course and wasn't asked for any UK high school quals. I did a Diploma at TAFE (here in Australia) then went into the degree, and some of the degree units were recognised so I have exemptions for some of the units meaning my degree can be completed sooner. There are pathways through a lot of TAFEs. I work in a TAFE and a lot of our Diploma of Nursing students go onto different nursing uni courses, such as midwifery. To get into the Diploma if you are applying straight from school, then here in VIC a Year 12 certificate is required, but if you've been out of education for 12 months then you're classed as a mature student and you just have to meet the entry requirements for the course i.e. literacy and numeracy tests at the required level. 

As Marisa says, costs would depend on the visa you have. If permanent then you would qualify as a local student and some of the Diploma courses are free, but you wouldn't be able to access VET or HELP loans until you have citizenship.
