  1. Pub sounds good!! We actually stayed there in 2005 when I was backpacking but it's a bit if a blur now. Also didn't have 2 kids in toe and looking for somewhere to live. Do you live on the Gold Coast?
  2. Hi Cal. Just been looking again. It was half the price with the interim cabins! I was contemplating booking it with the original price but even better now! All booked for our arrival in August! Just need to get go ahead and book the flights! [emoji16][emoji16] Thanks!! X
  3. Reason we're thinking October is if we touch down In August then stay in a Holiday let for 4 weeks till we find something permanent, the school holidays will have started in Sept by the time we have an adrs to use for the enrolment. Helensvale/hope island sound great. Thanks again.
  4. Managed to find a few snippets about this place on here but would like to hear fro anyone who's has experiences, good or bad, from Ashmore Palms Holiday village. We plant to touch down in August this year. Been looking at securing a holiday let for 4 weeks. Not sure whether to rent a holiday let for 4 weeks or stay at a holiday village. Kinda thinking they'll be more for the kids to do at a holiday camp as it will be hard keeping them entertained all the time whilst we sort things out. Also be good to meet others in same situation or just on their hols when we first arrive.
  5. Thanks for reply Rachel, we are looking at all the different suburbs but seem to keep coming back to hope island and Helensvale area... My eldest daughter will be 16 when we get there and my youngest 6 so just panicking about where to send them. My youngest struggles with her maths so hopefully she ll start improving also.... Our main concern is coming out mid August and not being able to enrol her until October as we will both be working and will struggle with child care etc. but does sound fun having a family extended holiday just unsure whether we would be able to manage that long out of work.
  6. Brill thank you Rachel, what school are your children attending and was it quite easy getting a place as long as you were in the catchment area?
  7. The reports that are on the school websites don't seem to be very informative. I find the Ofstead reports in England have more info. Am I missing something? Where's the best place to find out if schools are good or not?
  8. Is it possible to use a holiday rental as an Adrs?
  9. Hi Howard. How old are your kids? We're looking at moving to the Gold Coast in August. Was concerned that he kids wouldn't be able to get into school till October after having a long summer holiday here. We've actually been looking at Helensvale school (primary and secondary). Is this where your kids go to?
  10. Hi Tina We're in a similar situation to yours. Can I ask, what year did your son go into? Was that the last term of the last year? Thinking about coming out in August to the Gold Coast. Just concerned the time off will be too much (6weeks in UK, then about the same in Oz). My partners daughter will be 16 in August and finished her GCSEs but think she'll have to go back to school to do their equivalent. Is this the case?
  11. Had our visas granted this week! Woo hoo. Now comes the fun bit, or not so fun depending who you ask. Hoping to move to the Gold Coast and we aim to move out in August when the 2 kids finish school for the year. Our youngest is 6 so in primary school. Eldest will be 16 when we go and leaving high school in the UK. One of my concerns is if we leave in Mid August, we won't be able to secure a school for the youngest till the next term which starts in October! That's 1 hell of a holiday from school....not something I'm keen on as its too log in my eyes if school. Has anyone else had the same problems when moving out? How have they coped with holidays etc? Is there a good time to go? In temped to leave it till sept and just try and get her in at the start of the last term, my partner is keen to leave earlier!! Anyone help with this dilemma??
  12. How long did it take to finalise your medical after it was referred please. My partner has had medical complications lately so kinda thinking we'll get referred now.
  13. I have the same statement on my application page, it also says ,medical evidence - required' on the documents page. I was unsure if they has been uploaded by the doctor yet. Does s mean they have been uploaded? I've not had a CO assigned to my account yet so to me it just means it's been uploaded.....
  14. Great info. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping tomorrow to move to the Gold Coast in August. Will probably be looking at moving to the north side as I reckon myself or partner might have to travel to Brisbane for work. One of my concerns was there not being anywhere with a Pub, restaurant (clubs occasionally) vibe on the north side. We are in our early 30's and have kids but still like going out every now and then. Is there places to go with this in mind in the north side? I heard you mention Sanctuary cove, and main beach. Are these the 2 main areas up north? Also, what's it like for travelling south in the evening if we were to venture there from say Upper coomera, Helensvale, Hope springs etc? Thanks
  15. Thanks for the info! Yeah, I've been looking online and they all seem to ask for licence. I take it your going to be working towards your licence now. Is $38 the going rate for un-licences or are they paying you the same?
  16. Gilligan's was by far the best hostel when I was there. Was back in 2006 though. Had a nightclub/bar next to it, pool, good facilities etc. defo recommend it
  17. Would you be able to email me with the contact details your working for or your details? Plan to head out in August so be good to get as many contacts as possible be over I do.
  18. Yeah, applied for the 189 visa. Had a look on the site. They say 3 months, which is what my agent told me. 4 weeks is really quick!
  19. Congratulations, and good luck with your new life in Oz!! I'm an electrician also. Submitted my application at the end of Dec. how long did it take you from submitting to getting the grant?
  20. What are they paying for sparks with a licence there at the mo? I take it your in the process of working towards it? Does there seem plenty of work about at the moment? Was worried about getting a start without a licence when I land.
  21. Where abouts in Queensland are you working? I'm looking at moving to the Gold Coast in July/August. Why did they leave the lines when they were on that much? I've looked into some of the mine work. Some of the rotas they work seem pretty full on, 3/4 weeks on with 1 off. Don't think I'd fancy that, but would work 2/2. Yeah it's a bit of a ball ache getting all your quals. Good news you got some work though!
  22. Congrats on the job. Where is it your working? Have you been employed as a trade assistant or spark? How's the pay?
  23. I was pretty lucky, only had to wait a couple of weeks. Not sure how often they run the courses though.
  24. The practical consisted of a fairly basic installation. Similar to the 1 done in the AM2, to pass UK apprenticeship. I'd say easier though. Also had to do a safe isolation on a heater. This is to be done the Ozzie way though, so just a case of learning the process. Next was the wiring of a DOL starter motor. Lastly, there was the theory part. Requires some revision, but wasn't too bad.
