I've just started researching what looks to be a nightmare on how and what to take. One company said our TVs need to have wooden boxes to transport them at a cost of £250 each! Is this the same with all companies?

Regardless of the packaging I wouldn't take it anyway.

    1. The tuners are different here - you might not get all the channels (if any?)
    2. If it's a smart TV most of them can't be changed to a new region. You might be stuck with the British apps that you can't use in Australia and unable to install Australian apps.

You would have, but without the filing it generally takes about 3 years for them to work through the backlog.

Nowadays it's much quicker and they are working through backlogs from the last decade or so, many people are getting cheques for past overpayments sent back to them.

That said I am looking forward to hitting submit on my final UK tax return and my first AUS one in the next few weeks.

The UK owes me £5,700 in overpaid tax for last year and the AUD authorities about $13,500 for 21/22 tax year.

    Kerching ! ! !

There was me getting excited when I found $10 when the first time I put my coat on this winter!

I'm not aware of any reason why it should take longer?

The new government have said they are going to give priority to the backlog. The 887 PR queue is nearing 2 years, so they may move the resources away from new applications (such as the 190) onto this, this is my speculation though.

But you would have got that anyway at the end of the year, you didn't get a refund for leaving you got a refund based on how much you earnt and how much tax had been withheld

If I hadn't filled out the paperwork and notified them I would have received nothing.

The 489 visa advises you need to live for two years and work for one year in a regional area.

This is makes you elebible t to apply for the 887 visa. This is not a requirement for the 489.

Whilst you are on a 489 you can only live and work in a regional area. You cannot live or work in an area that isn't on the postcode list whilst you hold a 489. However, if have applied for your 887 and your bridging visa is active you can live and work anywhere. The same applies for a granted 887.

I have attached an extract from my grant letter - "Must Say In Specified Area". You should check yours and VEVO.

  7. If they decide they don't want to let more migrants in I hope they improve the processing times for those already here. I applied for my 887 a year ago and there has been nothing at all and it looks like I will have another 12 months wait.

It's not just myself it impacts. My Australian partner is impacted.

If it's with the exception of parent visas, how would the OP qualify?

I didn't say they did. I am highlighting that in some circumstances you can get Medicare on a bridging visa in order to help other who stumble across this post and have applied for another visa. This is possible as the title of this thread is quite broad and not specific to parental visas.

  9. I am posting this for anyone reads this and is wondering why the OP cannot get an interim Medicare card. This is offered to permanent resident applicants with the exception of parent visas. The OP falls into this category and the 804 is an "Aged Parent visa".

People who are in Australia on a bridging visa with a skilled PR (and others) application are eligible for an interim card (a blue card) and are also entitled to elective surgery.

I just thought I would add this incase someone reads this at a later time and gets the wrong end of the stick.

  10. I don't have a degree either. I had a job offer before I arrived into SA and another the week I arrived. I also applied for a job, a was offered the position (but later refused) that specified a degree as mandatory. i would make sure you address why you have equivalent experience in your cover letter.

I have a few questions today tbf. My wife is embarking on the journey for a 491 visa and we had the view of moving to WA however with things having gone quiet over the last few years and a few nerves setting in our migration agent has asked us what we think of South Australia?

What’s the current situation re the jobs market in south Australia ? My wife is a primary school head and would want a month or two off to help settle the kids into their new lives (atm 12 & 😎 and I am a signalling design engineer on the railway .

Also with a 491 when can we buy a house over there as we are unsure as to whether to rent our property here in the uk out .

I can't comment on your particular industries but there seems to be a general lack of skilled workers in South Australia.

according to their 22 month wait times)

I am sorry to say - the processing times have changed.

    • 25% of applications: 18 months
    • 50% of applications: 19 months
    • 75% of applications: 21 months
    • 90% of applications: 25 months

so my question is if I take this job and change job skills could it have a negative effect on my 887?

No obligation to work in same profession you migrated on. I know a few 887 holders who didn't You will be fine.

  13. Before you applied and moved these type of things would have gone through your mind. At the time how did you think you would handle it? When thing happen like this the mind can snowball and make you feel worse. Could you try and get back into that mindset from the early days?

    Easier said than done
