  1. I am a citizen. just had a good look though the small print. Looks like the fees are about $5 per month (so, rough maths; $1680 in fees until I retire) I wonder if the fees go up if I stop making contributions? Does this sound reasonable? Just wondering if there was a better option.
  2. I am returning to the UK for good in August. I have always lived in the southwest, and love it there. Thinking about out where I plan to live when I get back and using the opportunity for a fresh start, I like the idea of living in Bournemouth. I know now the area well, but not the town so much. What are people's opinions of what it is like to live there? Are there any areas to avoid?
  3. I am planning to move back to the UK for good in august(ish) My query involves super. I understand I can't take it back with me, but I am worried that the fees will slowly eat away at it until I can withdraw it. Does anyone one know of a super company with no or very low fees who I can transfer it to to minimise the impact of fee on my savings considering I won't be adding to it any more? Or or any other advice on this?!
  4. Hi all I am traveling back to England in a week. I have just found out to my horror that i only have 20kg checked baggage allowance :arghh: So, please share with me your best tips for traveling light! (Sadly big coats and jumpers will be required as all of my stuff is here.) I have 7kg hand luggage allowance which I intend to make to most of! Help!
  5. I used a blob of white toothpaste on bites. Stops the itching and soothes. I have never found a repellant that really works. If we do spend time outside in the evening, try burning mosquito coils (a bit like insense, you light it then blow it out and it continues burning letting of a llittle smoke and an incense like smell. (These definately reduce the number of mozzie buzzing round)
  6. Wembly or West Leederville would be good options. Close enough to the beach and city, but not one of the more expensive suburbs. The closest train station would be in West Leederville. Buses are good through that area too. Let us know wher you end up!
  7. Sign up to Groupon, Scoopon and Living Social. I just got a haircut for $26 at a good salon (forget the name) I love doing this, it means I get a good price cut at a salon I may not normally go to. It might mean a drive somewhere (mine was in Claremont) but how else do you get to explore new suburbs?
  8. Is it just me or does the tea in Australia seem grey? We have tried a lot of different brands and they just dont brew the same! (We have found Dilmah is the best brand and closely resembles the decent tea you get in the UK.) Failing that, you can buy a box of Yorkshire tea in the UK section of woolied for $8! First world problems.....
  9. I am planning on returning to the UK mid way through 2015. Obviously getting a job is going to be a priority! I have signed up with a few recruitment sites (Jobsite and Reed) I am getting daily job alerts sent to my email based on my preferences - which is great because it gives me a good idea of what jobs are available (and an idea of salary!) and a couple of recruiters have also been in touch with jobs they think I would be suitable for. (I have since updated my information so that they know I am not available until mid 2015!) It gives my confidence a boost knowing there are jobs out there so hopefully I can hit the ground running when I arrive! I have a query though. Obviously all of my recent references are based in Australia. Is it worth getting written references from my Aussie employers, or would just providing their phone and email on my resume suffice? (noting for them not to call Perth at 3am!)
  10. I am super excited to be going home for 3 weeks at Christmas. (Christmas really is not the same in Aus) While we are there we are going to make job enquiries and research places to live etc. Great advice to come back in the English summer.
  11. I grew up in Wiltshire! (and intend to move back to Dorset!) It is a beautiful part of the country and when i have been back for Holidays I appreciate it so much more than when I used to live there!
  12. I don't really mind a bit of rain to be honest, but I suspect after the 4th days of rain I might be a bit over it! I don't not intend to come back to Oz after I return. I am happy to accept that it is a decision I have made and am going to make it work for us. There are so many more people in the world worse off than us, I feel lucky that I can make a decision to be close to my family! We are moving back near to our families and where we grew up, close enough but far enough. (Close enough for family to come and stay at weekends but far enough the we are not in each others pockets and that we can feel like it is a fresh start)
  13. My partner and I have been in Australia for around 6 years. We have made the decision to return to the UK for good. This decision was a difficult one, and to be honest, if it wasn't for me wanting to return, I suspect my partner would stay. (Due to better job, weather, etc) I want to go back to be with my family. Hopefully we will move back mid-way through 2015. My question to anyone who has returned is how do you adjust? I know there will be days when it is cold dark and rainy when I am going to wish I was back in sunny Australia. I know the UK is ultimately where I want to be and start a family and grow old, but I suspect it will take a bit of getting used to before I settle back into the English way of life. Who has done this and how did you feel initially and after a few months/years?
