  1. Hi, We're flying out this week, I'll be out on a 189 but my mrs is going out on a WHV until her spouse visa is granted (around January, we hope! Submitted in April...). In regards to landing cards/interogation, does she need to say she's only here temporary (as per working holiday visa) ? Would they begin to raise questions if I'm on a permanent visa but she's on a temporary and we're clearly entering with intentions to stay? Anyone else been in this situation?
  2. argos sell them, pretty naff quality but worth a look
  3. Vote UKIP! Oh wait, wrong country.. (I should stop reading the Daily Mail)
  4. We're going with about $40k saved. We have no kids, no mortgage in the UK, no family in Aus, and as yet, no jobs lined up (going in October). Terrified it'll run out before we both find work, but ultimately thats the risk you have to take, we've been putting it off "to save more" for too long
  5. Hi all, I'll be moving October 2014. My current UK passport expires in October 2015. Would it be best to renew my passport before I go (taking a gamble on the backlog we keep hearing in the news) or wait until I'm there any renew offshore? Thanks
  6. Sounds like my story. I wanted to go after uni at 21, but didn't have the experience to get enough points for a 189. Tried every year until I finally had enough at 26! I could have tried other routes, but wanted to be independent and not SS or company sponsored. Moral of the story; good things come to those who wait....(or is that guinness?)
  7. Submitted my partners spouse visa earlier this year, our agent says it can take up to a year now so we're possibly looking at March/April 2015 for the grant. We're impatient and can't wait that long! Our agent says we can go early with me on my 189 and Mrs on a WHV. A few questions to those who have taken this route: Will there be any problems entering Australia if I'm on a PR declaring myself as a migrant but Mrs on a temporary visa? When the spouse visa gets granted, do we have to leave and re-enter Australia to "activate" it? Will the spouse visa be affected in any way as we originally applied whilst in the UK but then went over earlier? Thanks
  8. Is this the series with the family that moved back to the UK because they couldn't get their childs favourite juice drink out there?
  9. Have they taken the money from your credit card yet? I don't know about the police certificates, but our agent advised us not to arrange medicals yet as they have to be valid at your initial entry to Australia, and they're only valid for 12 months, so if you have to wait 9 months for the visa you're left with a small window to arrange flights etc.
  10. I'm in a similar position to you, sent off for my partners visa in May. Money taken from credit card May 10th and case officer allocated shortly afterwards. Our agent says its likely to take the full 9 months to be granted, and we should not arrange medical until July at the earliest, as they're only valid for 12 months. Baffled as to why it should take 9 months, but I guess that even though its assigned to a CO, they're probably still working on backlog of other applications
  11. Thanks Bob I got as far as the Wiki pages, but haven't been able to find much on Dr Elsey, such as where he came from etc. I think theres a few history buffs that lurk around PIO, lets see what they come up with. Thanks J
  12. Thats my surname, perhaps a distant relative? Theres not too many around with the Elsey surname
  13. Have you had a look on airbnb.com.au ?
  14. Hi We submitted my partners 309 visa application earlier this month, the payment showed up on my credit card 16 days ago so I know they have it. How long can I expect to wait before they call her up for medicals/police check? Our agent informs us its likely to take up to 9 months!
  15. I'm baffled by this whole "local experience" thing. I can understand for jobs such as law, accountants, tradies (regulations and such), but for IT, particularly those on a technical side, really? I struggle to understand how developing software in Melbourne is any different to doing it in London, New York, San Fran etc. Perhaps I'm missing something, but code is code, compilers don't start behaving differently in different cities! I've asked friends who've done the move, and they say its complete nonsense and they've never been blocked by it, and is often used as a way of declining candidates for reasons they otherwise wouldn't say. What do you think?
  16. What type of job are you looking for?
