  1. The reason colds a flu are around in the winter months is because they are caused by viruses. Viruses thrive in the cold. Bacteria and fungi don't they like the warm, but they don't cause colds or flu. Then of course personal immunity is an issue. children and those in close contact with children are going to be at higher risk of catching viruses. My neices and nephews are the same ages as my kids and are also in childcare in the southern hemisphere. They get sick way less. Usually 1 or 2 fluey things each winter. They have had their 1st gastro aged 2 and 5. My kids are generally ill from Nov to march with one thing or another and I've lost count of the number of times they've had gastro....our UK friends kids are as all the same.
  2. Yeah and level of experiencei guess. I'm a band 7 in the UK, but guessing in won't go in as that in Australia. I'm going to have a look at the pay scales. Thanks :-)
  3. Chantelle have you worked out how their grading works? The Mater job I've applied for is a grade 5 just wondering how that compares to uk bandings.
  4. One more thing to add... It's a bit personal but If you are planning on having anymore children then you may want to plan this carefully around your visa application and actually leaving to go to Australia. We learnt the hard way :'(
  5. Hi kelly Yes it is really daunting and expensive. I'm Interested in why the queensland health put you off a 189. This is an independent visa so once you have it you can go to Australia and apply for and take any job you want as will your other half....you will both be permanent residents. I can't see why an Australian would be more employable than you when you have PR. I imagine what they mean is that they prefer 457s to a sponsored skilled visa as the skilled visa's costs them more. Others who have actually made the move may know more about this than me. Whether there are jobs in brisbane?? A job search should give you an answer. There is the new children's hospital and the Mater group that I have been looking at. I would definitely go for the 189 if you are sure you want to stay and if your other half's job is not on the SOL as it gives you a lot more security as well as help with childcare and access to public services and schools. I would ignore what go matilda says about SOL jobs and just go on the immi.gov website for up to date codes. No idea of the supervised practice thing. Never heard of it. Is that for enrolled nurses may be? You should be fine with your degree and experience. Ielts is the academic one and usually one of your 1st steps in the process. The results go on your 189 application to help with points as well as your anmac assessment application. Just Google ielts for your local centre and all the info is there. You need to sit down and list your expenses to work out what it might cost. There are plenty of threads on here to look at this. Depends on what visa you do, if you want to ship things,Rental when you get there. I haven't done it yet so no actual personal experience. Good luck with getting started!
  6. This is very interesting. Do you know if there are any cases where this course of action has been successful? Sorry to hijack the thread but our situation is that my son has been recently diagnosed with mild asd. He is in mainstream education and is academically in line with his peers. He requires understanding of his condition but very little else. However because the medical officers are likely to take a blanket view of his diagnosis we are very unlikely to be successful in a skilled independent application (even though we were granted one in the past) we are now going for a 457- not ideal with 3 young children. We have been strongly advised to not attempt a 189 application by a specialist lawyer in the field, but if there was a way of testing the water without a huge payout that would be amazing!
  7. Yes, that is what we were told too. As CollegeGirl says they look at the possible cost for your entire working life, so up to age 65. Definitely go though an experienced agent specialising in medical conditions. It's a huge loss of money if you don't get the visa.
  8. Sorry. Old habit from our application 8 years ago! Both on Csol I'm a registered nurse, husband computer network and systems engineer.
  9. That's interesting. I missed that she was born in NZ. Yes, not an easy decision for us to make. Both husband and I have jobs on MODL so hopefully we wouldn't be too crazy to give the 457 a go.
  10. # We have spoken to Peter Bollard who was also highly recommend. He gave us a good idea of what we're up against. I guess I just found today's episode really hopeful
  11. I'd love to know more about the family featured in today's episode of wanted down under revisited in the UK. It was the Cleary Family. Single Mum Tanya and her son Jordan. Jordan has Aspergers syndrome and they made the move last year. I wonder what visa they went on? My son has mild ASD and we now believe that our only visa option is a 457. I thought the facilities and education for children on the autistic spectrum looked and sounded great on the show. That, mixed with the outdoors lifestyle would be great for my son. It's made me want to get out there even more! Going on a 457 makes me very nervous though! Did anyone else see the show?
  12. Thanks for the link. I was under the understanding that there wasn't a medical for the 457 if coming from the UK. But may be I have that wrong. To be honest the 457 application route is very new to us so have a lot to read up about it.
  13. I agree we have more investigation to do. I'm not sure exactly how this is different. But surely if the agent wanted the fees he would tell us to go ahead with the 189 application ...much more lucrative for him, even if he knows it's not going to be successful. Yes, our son's diagnosis was very recent.
  14. Just going with what the lawyer said really. They must asses health in a slightly different way when going from a 457 to PR. But I don't have a full understanding of it at the moment so I need to ask more questions before we go ahead.
