<p><p>This is the reply I had back from ACWA - Still confused and debating on an hourly basis, lol</p></p>

    <p><p>"Hi Catherine,</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

    <p><p>Thank you for your email.</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>Positive skills assessment as 'welfare worker' will offer you free membership with ACWA. Many employers prefer candidates with membership of ACWA.</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>You will need to choose an eligible occupation depending upon your circumstances.</p></p>

<p><p>I have just contacted the migration coordinator for SA at Australia House for some guidance too, just waiting for her reply xx</p></p>

<p><p>HI Jodi, Thank you for your advice (just having an ear to listen in a similar situation is really helpful). I think I have got this message malarkey sorted out now :-)</p></p>

<p><p>I am going to do a bit more research today and email ACWA and put the question to them about benefits - if not I am moving over to camp Youth Worker lol xx</p></p>

    <p> </p>

  3. The best advice I had was to: 1. Make sure you cover all the points (read the question several times) 2. have an introduction and a conclusion (separate paragraphs) 3. Use an opening sentence and closing one within each separate paragraph you write 4. Devote a new paragraph to each new argument or topic (all applicable to writing test - and you cannot get above a 7 if you miss any of them out) The listening test was really straightforward if you are a natural English speaker, as was the speaking test - for this you are prompted to answer the examiners scripted questions. The reading test was my personal achilles heel as I hated the true/false/not given questions - still gives me nightmares. I would get online and download practice papers and practice. practice, practice. Good luck and let us know how you get on. I got an overall mark of 9 Cath x
  4. <p><p>Arghhhh, have been questioning my decisions all day, now utterly confused… do I, don't I??? I thought that a benefit of having 2 skills assessments could mean a higher chance of successful employment. However, I now don't think this is the case, so is it worth spending an extra £1k to get an additional skills assessment - or if i don't do it will I kick myself in 12 weeks time??? Sorry for the rant, this is driving me insane, lol xx</p></p>

  5. Just wondering if the skills assessment has any positive benefit when applying for jobs? or is it just a necessary but useless part of the visa application process? Thanks Cath
  6. Following a lengthy chat with my migration agent, my latest thoughts are - I am going to apply for skills assessments for BOTH Youth Worker and Welfare Worker as this will give more options and maybe allow me to sleep at night without having cold sweat panics, lol xx

    <p><p>Thanks Jodi.</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>Having just chatted with my agent, I think we are going to submit 2 skills assessments. 1 for Youth Worker (for the reasons you have mentioned - more likely to produce a visa!) and also continue with the Welfare Worker Skills Assessmet. For the reason that having a positive skills assessment when we get out there should help me find a job easier. I was worried that if i swapped to YW (not too late) then I may be pidgin holed into that profession and not be eligible for the Welfare Worker posts (I believe these are higher paid).</p></p>

<p><p>The only negative of this way forward is having to pay out 2 lots of fees :-( but hey, if it means we can achieve our dreams then it's a small price to pay.</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>I am equally qualified and experienced in both roles, so it shouldn't make too much of a difference.</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>When are you submitting your application, oh and which migration agent are you using? xxx</p></p>

    <p> </p>

  8. Wow Fiana, I had never seen that before. It's getting scarier :-( i notice that you gave had your skills assessment through - I am just in the process of completing the application and preparing documents. Do you have any advice for me please? X

<p><p>Hi Jodi - just responded on thread before I saw this - oops!</p></p>

    <p><p> </p></p>

<p><p>I am currently applying to have skills assessed for 190 Welfare Worker State Sponsored by SA, although they have currently closed their applications for this years allowance :-( Am taking a risk that I will be ready to apply once the new list is revealed in July - however, there is also the risk that the occupation could be removed. Hence the panic whether I should change it to Youth Worker. Really don't know what route would be best :-( C xx</p></p>

    <p> </p>

  10. I am going for Welfare Worker, but at present it has reached its ceiling limits for SA (if they even still exist). However, I can see that Youth Worker is still free and accepting applications. By the time the skills assessment is through we will nearly be at July and I then have to wait and see if its still on the new list, or change plans and go under Youth Worker - which is a different assessing body and would take another 12 weeks to get a positive result - arghhhh!!! too many uncontrollable variables. I suppose our fates lay in the hands of the Sunshine Gods! C xx
  11. Hi Jodi. Is the skills assessment the same or similar for both youth worker and welfare worker? what do you need to lodge your application? I am in the process of gathering the evidence for my skills assessment. I have 3 years youth work experience, 4.5 years as an education welfare officer and a BSc tons in Health, community and social care. I have been out of the industry for last 2 years but have recently been offered 2 jobs, 1 as a youth worker for young carers and 1 as a senior re-ablement worker for Adult Social Care services (waiting for start dates for both). Hoping the recent experience will help for when we make the move, but of course cannot be used for the skills assessment.
  12. Sorry guys, I should have mentioned that we are using my career to gain the visa as I am a welfare worker. So transferring to the police isn't an essential element.
  13. Thanks Jon, although I could be wrong and it could be wicker, or sea grass… not really sure :-( so erring on the side of caution.
  14. Hi, My husband is currently in the police service here in the UK, although, when we make the move he would rather not continue that path as he would rather not work nights. However, his long term aim would be to have a job within customs/border protection, even possibly mail handling. We have been advised that he cannot pursue this career until he is an Australian citizen, so that gives him 3 years to work in a career that would facilitate a transition to the path he wants to follow. So my question is… From when we arrive until he is granted citizenship, what path should he follow? Or what jobs would give him the best chance of success in becoming a customs officer? Any advice both positive and negative would be gratefully received. Kind regards Cath x
  15. We have a gorgeous solid mango wood table and chair set which I would love to bring with us. However, the 6 chairs are made out of a rattan type material. I am just wondering if anyone knows what the costs are like for fumigation, as to whether it is worth bringing with us or selling before we go? Will be filling a 20ft container. Any advice would be really helpful thank you Cath x Ps. Also posted in Homes - as I am sure the mods will delete which ever one is in the wrong place

    Hi

    Hello and welcome :-)
  17. I am more worried about my poor doggy being bitten by a spider than I am about me. Is there anti-venom for dogs? xx
  18. Hi, I had an hours Skype session with a lady called Catherine at catvantienhoven@yahoo.com and got a 9 in my writing. I certainly would not have managed it without her help and a quick assessment of my writing. drop her an email and I am sure she will be able to give you some advice. Cath x
  19. Hi Jodi It must work as I got my scores this morning and had: Writing 9 Listening 9 Speaking 9 Reading 8 Overall 9 Think the advice from a qualified examiner really helped too.
  20. Well done. I had mine through this morning and got a 9 in all but the reading, which was an 8. So I am super happy too :-)
  21. I used this and found it to be helpful, although I did print off all the test papers as it's not the same when trying to do the answers on-screen. I used it for the 30 days before my test and tried to do at least half an hour a day. I also paid for an hours Skype session with an IELTS examiner, who gave some really useful advice about how NOT to screw up, lol. I sat my IELTS last Saturday and am waiting for the results (fingers x-d for Friday).
  22. OMG, I actually feel quite sorry for the croc :-( Wonder how a human would have fared against a snake like that?
  23. I would also be interested in this, as we have just brought a new vitamin to replace burnt out blender and our lap top is o its last legs so will need to replace that very soon. Do you get any leeway for items that are replacements? Thanks
  24. Well done on making the move. I am interested in how Tasmania were when you told them you couldn't make it work - were they understanding or did you have to jump through many hoops? Cath xx
