  1. That is a very common in Oz I've noticed. Aussie employers will say locals don't want to work cut scene construction work for 11 hrs more or less non stop for $20 an hour (in Perth) you realise why. Backpackers get used and abused a bit out here by employers. Aussie citizens can get a whole host of cushy local government numbers, why would they want to slave their guts out in the boiling sun for the equivalent of literally just over minimum wage? Don't blame them for not bothering.
  2. There's loads of info spouted on here by the PR's that is wrong too re WHV's. Like the ones that constantly insist you have to have $5000 in your account etc.
  3. Thus you haven't got a clue what your talking about. It IS ironic because your whingeing about other people whingeing, thus it's ironic intentional or not.
  4. Happy days. Deffo the sensible thing to do!
  5. Mate his statement wasn't worthy of a serious reply. Poles have put loads of tradies out of business in the UK plus nicked loads of low paid jobs in factories etc.
  6. Andy for the love of god man, stop ruining this thread by giving us your opinion as you know, errr a person who actually LIVES in the UK. We only like liberal well to do engineers and the like commenting on this thread, you know the ones that white flighted out of the UK years ago but are happy to tell you off for being a terrible racist for questioning uncontrolled immigration, and telling you all the ways that hundreds of thousands of swarthy unskilled peasants from Bulgaria etc are going to make your lives better.
  7. Very interesting, but how is that at all relevant to a WHV i.e a backpacker? 3 fillings for $250, what's he using a trowel and cement?
  8. That won't do **** for a root canal type infection. Louisesteph, I'd deffo try and get yourself bumped up the list. As scottishstacey says tell them you are going travelling very soon. I don't want to alarm you but there are elements to coming out on a WHV that are stressful enough as it is, the last thing you want is some dental issue just after you get here trust me.
  9. There's always some fker on here ready and waiting to disagree with you for the sake of disagreeing with you. We are WHV holders NOT permanent residents. We don't have the same rights. You can't get dental insurance as a backpacker, nothing worth the premium and paper it's written on though I gladly stand to be corrected. And yea I had root canal work/infection needing. Hope and pray you don't need that out here. If I needed it now i'd get it yanked and a platinum one put it in Thailand on the way home. At the end of the day you are travelling 10,000 miles. There is an element of risk.
  10. You should be ok, as long as it's not infection or a break. I dunno I always get the impression that wisdom tooth issues are the dentists equivalent of a garage mechanic or builder doing the old sucking air through teeth treatment i.e completely unneccesary. Seriously though, be careful about dental work in Oz, it's even more of a rip off that private UK practice.
  11. A BOMB is the answer! Seriously, get ANY dental work you need done before you go, as dental work is not reciprocal and it costs a fortune. I had to fly to Asia to get work done on an abscess or id either be looking at thousands of dollars or having it pulled out.
  12. Right....and your point is? The article clearly refers to apparently "unskilled" jobs.
  13. That is a good point actually. The amount of backpackers here alone with work visas is insane, let alone all the immigrants and "students", all with working rights.
  14. Few do in all fairness...most either get signed off a few weeks early or put the number in an hope for the best....
  15. Hmmm.......funny all of a sudden construction is less-skilled now, also can we include chefs under food services? Nothing at all to do with the fact that Aussie's don't want to lift a finger for much under $30 per hour then, take days off as and when they like and generally take the piss when it comes to work if it's not in the mines?
  16. A shame for you mate, you must have been really looking forward to it as well.
  17. Tickled Pink is spot on. Get your second year qualifying work, or at least the bulk of it out the way ASAP. Saves a lot of hassle down the line. Also, means you are not pressurised to take jobs with cowboy farmers/hostels (and I don't mean that in the good sense) and there are a lot of them.
  18. Accountancy is well worth staying in Uni for, seriously Oz will wait. Know what you're saying on the debt issue but will be well worth it once qualified.
  19. Some of these Aussie job advertisers need to get real. Last heard the above skills wern't too prevelant in Milton Keynes or Tamworth. They will still offer WOOF arrangements for that.
  20. From Wales mate, left last April. Had enough of signing on and off and on and off the dole. Still miss the UK but it's a different world over here it really is.
