  1. I love how this is starting to turn into an anti-Aus diatribe by the same usual suspects. It's hilarious how they are trying to infer that it is hard to get a job in WA all because her OH didn't want to work as a TA temporarily. I don't give a monkeys what anyone here from their bedroom in the home counties says, if you have UK experience in a trade such as an electrician you will be able to pick and choose jobs, throughout the WHOLE of Australia. Sparkies, fitters and welders reign supreme out here. I don't care what area it's in either. There is always work available, EVEN as TA. You all magically think that regional areas don't have electrical work that needs doing somehow?
  2. Even if it is less it wouldn't be min. wage. I'll ask a few mates and see what they're on as TA's while they wait for their licence conversion.
  3. A TA or trades assistant. It's not min. wage and you could get a LOT of hours. I get the impression the posters OH doesn't want to do this, and thought he could walk straight into a $40/50/h sparky job, which I don't blame him for as a lot of my mates have had the same TA thing happen to them when they had a lot of experience back in blighty. Dems the rules unfortunatley. Overcome and adapt.
  4. My advice mate is spend as little time in hostels generally. They are not pleasant especially if you have lived on your own in the UK. They are ok for a week or two to make connections but after that get your own place asap especially as the warmer Perth/WA gets, the scarcer the accom will be as backpackers generally follow the sun.The ones in Perth are bad as a general rule although the Emporers Crown is good, (clean, secure) but not a party place. The party places tend to be the shabbier ones. Avoid 1201 backpackers, grand central and the coolibah lodge like the plague.
  5. You know nothing about me, ergo you're a hypocrite. Come here and live for a while then come and say there are no jobs for tradies.
  6. A few months longer than you though. Don't need a weatherman to tell me which way the wind is blowing, and you don't need to be an economist to know that there is an abundance of jobs all over WA, ESPECIALLY for her OH but she has already said he's too good to work as a TA, so there you go.
  7. If the op wants to pm me the region they are restricted to ill ask some of my leccy mates where they found work no probs. Every Aussie employer you speak to says the Same thing, namely they cannot get and keep (Aussie) staff unless they are paying $30 an hour plus, So they are usually when brits used to earning half or less than half that rock up.
  8. I said area. What So now the WA regional just covers Mandurah? Hows that work then Its only a 35 min train ride from Perth. There is work everywhere here, sparkies in particular get their hand bitten of, even if they have to work as a trades assistant until they get their oz licence, they are still on good money given the hours. Its not harsh this forum is evolving into an anti Australia unhappy expats collective. Its near enough there now. All backslapping each others exagerrated doom and gloom mongering. Jobs and disposable income are the biggest pinnochio inducers here, both of which are on a different stratosphere to the UK, and I mean in a good way. Even in the UK the poster Would get a job with that much effort, and now everyone here is convinced that area is like some valleys or northern town for work? Come off it.
  9. No work in the Perth área AND your OH is a spark? I think you're telling porkies. In fact I know you are, me as a mere backpacker am turning jobs away. I know Loads of electricians here and they are working 12hr days for 14 days straight So Please stop worrying people unneccesarily.
  10. It isn't paradise here that's for sure, especially as a traveller but it definitely offers more opportunities in almost all aspects of life apart perhaps from dating as it seems something of a sausage fest compared to the UK, at least in the West and North. It's really, really noticeable. It's possible to have a low paid job in Oz and enjoy a decent lifestyle living on your own and save a little. It is much, much harder to do this in the UK.
  11. Mate if it doesn't matter don't declare it, it's only a caution.
  12. I'm in the same boat. Bottom line is September is "the" quiet month picking wise.
  13. No. Are you trying to justify a young woman being gang raped?
  14. Nahh now way did x amount of people confuse a 20lb cat with a 400lb lion. It was probably a puma in actual fact. There's loads of big cats loose in the UK it's actually not that surprising we don't get way more sightings than we do.
  15. Yeah Singapore has gone up loads, my flight over was £600, now it's nearer 9. I looked into going business class back home way after xmas as I despise flying at the best of times let alone 18hrs and it's gone up by over £500.
  16. I heard they were going to give automatic 2 year visa's out as well.
  17. I think there are more German backpackers than any other nationality, perhaps even more than the Irish and that's saying something. They tend to come out here very young prior to starting university or their apprenticeship, most only stay for 4-9 months, year tops. Although generally unbelievably mean with money (can see why their economy is still good) I find them very honest and hard working to be fair. Also, they handle their booze pretty well too, very rare to see a German pissed up causing trouble IME. Heard a lot of horror stories about Alice Springs all in the same vein, apparently the main protagonists are indigenous.
  18. For the love of god man, don't burst the no-jobs bubble here, there are too many homesick brits looking for a reason to go home.
  19. According to most members of PIO, this.....
  20. I have quoted the most important excerpt for your convenience. And btw you don't sell newspapers by printing good news all the time.
  21. This is the latest PIO anti-oz mafia craze. Anyone can point at what makes a country thrive, and say that thing there isn't going to last forever. No **** Sherlock. If the mining boom is coming to an end, how come work has just started on a $30billion gas plant in the NT, or is that not part of Australia all of a sudden?
  22. Haha you better get used to members here telling you what the situation is like in your hometown from 10,000 miles away mate.
  23. I had the same thing done to me at Darwin airport by the Air Asia counter assistant when I was headed to Bali. She asked me if I had a return ticket (didnt ask for proof mind you) and when I replied that I hadn't as I had problems with my bank card due to a billing address in Oz. I had ample $$$ btw and figured I'd book it at the airport the other end. After all who in their right mind would want to stay Bali 1 second longer than neccesary? She was insistent and started reeling off that I'd get fined and deported and other doomsday scenarioos etc etc, que me spending an hour on a quiet public telephone in Darwin airport surronded by screaming kids booking a return ticket over the phone with some guy in India. It was very, very stressful. I got hung up once, and a conversation that would have taken 15 minutes in a quiet place took 4 x as long as we both had to keep repeating things. When I went back up to the check in desk, very stressed out, she simply nodded and let me go through! In other words, i could have just lied and saved myself a very troublesome hour. I have since found out that it is nothing to do with the respective immigration at all. It's down to the airline that flies you out as SHOULD something happen and you haven't got a return ticket, they are duty bound to fly you back.
  24. LOL you do not need 1/10 of that. Tenancy agreements and phone contracts? Driving licence, proof of WHV, contact numbers and a suitable address in Oz to send your taxfile no and set up your bank details for is all you need. Oz doesn't share the same credit history system as the UK. Also, travel insurance but then you can only get a reasonably priced one if you have a return flight date.
  25. Great grammar there. You know has it occured to you that some people who visit this forum actually LIKE Oz?
