  1. Hi there, I am a nurse too hoping to move from Perth to Tasmania, which hospital did you go too. My husband might struggle as he doesn't have a specific trade but that's ok, he would be prepared to do anything. Having another visit next week to look at a few houses. Good luck with whatever you decide. Anne
  2. I agree runslikeafish, economy in Oz is definitely better than UK. Cost of living in Tasmania, I have been told, is cheaper than Perth where I am. Personal preference between Launceston and Hobart for us, people seemed friendlier when we were there on holiday and there seems to be more to do in Hobart. Mind you we are in our late 40s/early 50s and will be looking for totally different things than someone with a young family. Employment agencies will definitely be the way to go for us, I am a nurse and should be ok for a job, but my 54 year old husband is worried that he won't get anything, but hopefully as runslikeafish says, it isn't always what you know but who you know when looking for a job, so think we will be networking as soon as we can. We will make a decision about a move after our second visit next month, Perth or Tassie. Good luck with your decision, would be interested to know what you decide. Anne
  3. Hi there, I am an Irish woman living in Perth at the minute. Moved here almost 6 years ago. The cost of living in Perth is becoming very high and we are considering move to Tasmania but have been warned that the economy is really bad and trying to find a job may be difficult for my husband. Petrol prices and cost of living in Tasmania is quite high but if you buy your food in the local markets its much cheaper. Rentals are expensive too and I am not sure how easy to come by they are. We are taking our second trip to tassie next month, but heading to Hobart as we weren't keen on Launceston after our visit las November. Not sure if any of that helped but good luck whatever you decide. Anne
  4. Hi Melza, maybe we need to look at Adelaide but isn't it as hot as Perth in the summer?
  5. Will definitely take heed of all the advice. Looking forward to going back in July, think this will make our minds up, I hope :-)
  6. Just another thought! How about White van man, or airport shuttle bus. Would using part of our home as a long term rental be an option for some income or is there enough rental properties on the market. Advice please. Thanks
  7. Thanks for your replies guys, think maybe we should just holiday in Tassie occasionally and stay put in Perth. Maybe looking at Tasmania as a retirement state instead or come over every summer to get away from the 40 degree heat :-(
  8. Hi everyone. I have been off and on this site for a while now and honestly can say that I can't wait for our move to Tasmania, Hobart area early next year. My problem now is that my other half is having doubts :nah: he turns 54 this year and is frightened that his working life will end as it will be too hard for him to find work and our social life will be non existent!!!! I am happy to go with the flow and give it a try. Ideally we would love to run a bed and breakfast, that would keep him busy, boarding kennels or just breed Airedales but he is now panicking. How can I convince him otherwise. We are making our second trip to Tassie, albeit only for 4 days from Perth early next month. Would anyone be willing to meet up with us for a social drink to promote this lovely state to him. A big ask I know, but any help much appreciated. Thanks. Anne
  9. Hi there, hoping to move to Tassie later this year. Thinking of buying a block to build but been told it isn't as cost effective as buying. What's your opinion and are there any architects you would recommend to draw up plans for us. We are visiting again in July with intention of buying a block within 30 minutes of Hobart. THanks in advance. Anne
  10. Hi there do you know if the guy you talked about could suggest anyone doing a Perth to Tasmania removal or would it be better to just ring him. Thanks in advance. Anne
  11. only staying for 5 nights this time so basing ourselves in Hobart. not booked any accommodation yet so recommendations greatly appreciated. will spend time looking at areas close to Hobart again, maybe some house viewing and mainly me sussing out some nursing agencies. really appreciate all the info, thanks :-) QUOTE=Skani;1936147175]Hobart's mean maximum is 11.7 and mean minimum 4.6 in July. Temperatures vary around the state but I'm not sure if you will be travelling around then or mainly staying in the Hobart area?
  12. Thanks for that, think I will keep looking at houses, still got till JUly before we come over for our second visit. What's the temp like in July? Anne
  13. Hi there, we are based NOR near Hillarys which is lovely for kids and nice places to eat. The only problem with august is that it is our winter and can be very wet, so beaches etc wont be the best places to be. Poms in Perth website offer holiday lets which might be worth a try also there are holiday villas at sorrento which is near Hillarys, google it and see how you go. Good luck, we have been here just over 5 years and I wish I had brought my kids when they were younger. Anne
  14. Definitely sounds just the place for us, roll on July when we can have a serious look at houses. Thank you Skani for all your advice, we owe you a drink :-)
  15. Hi there, me again. Any views on Montrose or Blackmans Bay as areas to settle in. Have seen some beautiful houses so wondered what anyone's opinions were. Also build or buy? If build, any recommended builders or even architects. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  16. Thank you for all your replies, Skani I am more excited about going to Tasmania now that I know there is so many clubs we could get involved in. Am really looking forward to our holiday in July for or second visit.the next thing after that will be to suss out where I can work. I know there a few psychiatric private units in Hobart somI will start there, and then look at agency work. Jules, we tend to do our Scottish dancing at home, we have managed to have a few ceilidhs. I know there is the Caledonian society in the city but living NOR we find it hard to get involved. Have a look at the link mentioned in one of the replies to me about Scottish dancing in WA. I may be Irish but my heart lives in Scotland too after spending o much time there. If there was Scottish dancing NOR I would definitely make an effort to go. Violethaze I love Richmond and would definitely say yes to all invites for quiz nights etc, my hubby is a fountain of useless information. will keep popping on this website for lots of info. Anne
  17. Hi there, I am in Carramar, sorry not able to help you with playmates for your 22 mth but wondered if you had tried Poms In Perth website, really good source of contacts. good luck. Anne
  18. Hi Skani, I will probably work in Hobart but are there any specific areas you would recommend. We would like somewhere with a bit of land as we would like another dog, we already have one terrier. We are open to lots of suggestions, we liked Kettering and anywhere close to that. We did do a few house opens but we're disappointed, we are thinking about building too but not sure how risky that is!!! Any advice greatly appreciated. A :-)
  19. Hi there, thank you for your reply. The reason we want to move again is because the intense, constant heat has beaten us. Five years on we need some cooler weather again, and the thought of ragging up in front of an open fire is very appealing. I am a psychiatric nurse and I am hoping to keep working part time but our dream is to run a bed and breakfast. We visited Tassie in November and we looked at both outskirts of Hobart and Launceston and preferred Hobart. We have seen a lot of lovely areas and I am happy to travel up to 45 minutes each way to work if need be. We are looking forward to visiting again in July. We Re more than happy to try as many social groups but as you said work is always a good place to start. :-)

    Big fears

Hi guys, my hubby and I are seriously thinking about moving to Tassie from Perth but worried about starting all over again. We moved from the Uk to Perth 5 years ago and have made some great friends but moving to Tassie means starting the friend hunt again. We are in our late 40s, early 50s, so where do we start. We both enjoy movies, theatre, ten pin bowling, scottish dancing and just socialising in general. Comments please, is it hard to set up a good social circle, what have your experience been. By the way my hubby is English and I am Irish but we both lived in Scotland for ages too. Thanks. Anne.
  21. Thank you for all the thoughts. We have done our recent trip and now wondering what next. Worried about the state of the economy and are we taking a step backwards, will definitely think twice before we sell up in Perth and move on. thanks again.
  22. Thanks for all the info, will definitely try to suss out all the places mentioned when we arrive. Bit worried about leaving our friends behind though, how easy is it to set up a social circle if you are in your late forties with no kids with us?
  23. Anyone got any views on building in Tassie. My only worry is the amount of time we would need to be in rental for. Any recommendations on local builders or even house designers, either in the Hobart or launceston regions. Thanks Anne.
  24. Thanks for that. What areas would you say are definite no no either near launceston or Hobart. Would love to live somewhere with a community feel walking distance to shops, pub etc. is that asking too much?
  25. Love the itinerary from Skani. We are landing in Tasmania on 17th November for 10 days and looking forward to seeing Tassie, will definitely look at the two links given. Anne
