1. I am a veggie, my grandson is lactose intolerant, we generally find that if you phone before you go to most restaurants and advice them of allergies/specific dietatary specs, they will do their best to cater for your needs. If you just rock up and hope that they can help - they probably can't. Phone first.
2. Hi Skani I had the same problem with the link. We used to have a combustion stove in the uk - a cheaper version of an Aga. Loved it - it heated the whole house and all the hot water.
3. Finally! I wish you all the best with your business, we have been in Tas for just over 6 months and as winter started, I have discussed with friends 'why doesn't someone put central heating into homes here'. Well done.

5. Hi there! We are at the other end of the age scale, but moved to Tassie about one month ago to retire. However, OH is an artist and already he has a few works on the go. Today, finally our stuff arrives from the UK. My OH is so excited (his golf clubs) and he is pacing around the lounge room like a caged animal, waiting for the truck!. We still drink beer tho! Aly
6. Hi there violethaze, well, its 10.30pm and still roasting. If u have spent some time in Melbourne you will be very used to fluctuations in weather! I only have positive things to say about tas, even tho we have only been here a few weeks. I must say tho, some things are a lot more expensive than the mainland however, real estate is so much cheaper, the food is fresh as is the air. We move into a unit at a very reasonable rate tomorrow, so I will have to give you updates on how everyhing is going. I have never been to NZ, but I would imagine that Tas is not too unlike it with regards to weather and people. Have you been before? I had never been, but my OH had and I always had a feeling that Tas would be right for both of us. When we were in the UK and discussing coming back to oz, we both said out of the blue Tasmania! So far so good.
7. wow! hottest day in Tassie on record!
8. Hi violethaze just been so busy socializing over the xmas and new year! We have been staying at Battery Point, so have watched the yatchs come in from the sydney to hobart, been kept away most nights by the party goers at the taste festival! We have just got a unit in midway point, so we will be moving over the next few days, also looking to buy a fridge and a couch! What is your story?
9. thanks Skani appreciate your comments. Aly
10. How much???!!!! Will do, it would be great and obviously you already know where to find the cheapest grog! We are looking for something similar vehicle wise - a station wagon. Its difficult to decide on the type of vehicle as you say, it depends on what you need it for. I have spent a few nights in a station wagon before! Personally, I don't have anything lined up work wise, but my hubby is an artist and has always works from home. I want to get back into part time stuff working with intellectually challenged adults, which is what I used to do. Where are you staying at the moment? We have arranged an appartment in New Town for the first two weeks after we arrive, it was the cheapest thing I could find! Ultimately, we want a long term lease, preferably a bit rural (as long as we can get internet access) but comuntable to Hobart. I think we might struggle with that! Looking forwards to having a beer with you! Aly
11. Hi Rick We will arrive in Hobart next week after 2 months in Sri Lanka - I just hope we have brought enough woolly jumpers! We are going to be in the same situation as you are - needing to find a place to live, a vehicle and eventually employment. I am assuming that you look on www.gumtree.com.au/s-hobart/ for vehicles, accomodarion and employment etc. There are also a few realestate websites that will give you details of accomodation according to what you are looking for, from a room in a shared house, to a 7 bedroomed mansion! www.realestate.com.au/, www.domain.com.au. [h=2]There are probably more out there that I don't know about. Good luck anyway! Aly[/h]
12. Thanks for that, i have already checked out the go-walkabout site, they can only give up to 21 days cover. I will try the other one. thanks again.
13. I wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice on this one, or if anyone knows of any travel insurance broker who would cover a one way trip from the uk to Tasmania via Sri Lanka for 2 months. Most brokers/companies will do emigration cover, but only for a couple of weeks max. Any suggestions welcome!
14. wait until you have somewhere to live. You can drive on your uk license for up to 3 months I think.
15. No worries - we are on holiday in Scotland at the moment and internet is a bit hit and miss. With regards to work as a nurse, I would give the same advise to send your CV's directly to the employer. From what I know about employment (I worked in a jobcentre for 9 years), over 50% of vacancies are never advertised. After about 4 weeks of sending your CV, if you haven't heard anything, follow it up with a phone call. Nothing to lose! We are just outside Preston. Good luck! Aly
16. Hello Myself and my OH are moving to Tas in October. I have never been, but have always felt drawn to the Island. OH has been, but only for a short period of time, when he was living in Brisbane. I often look on a few housing websites - http://www.realestate.com.au, http://www.domain.com.au which would give you more of an idea of what type of heating systems houses have. Just to be nosy - where in Lancs are you? We are just outside of Preston.
17. Thanks! I had sort of taken the weather into account, but hadn't given the available daylight hours any thought.
18. Hi, we will be arriving in Hobart in July (hopefully) and we thought that we would hire a camper-van, rather than a car and a rental, to enable us to drive around and look at different areas around Hobart. I believe that there are areas, National Parks, where you can stay for almost nothing. As Tas is so small compared to the rest of Aussie, distances don't seem to be too much of an issue. Just a thought.
19. There is a thread on PIO site [h=2]Poll: Which shipping company did you use?[/h]Loads of info on there. Also hints about insurance as well. Appears to be a lot cheaper if you get an independent quote rather than use the shipping companies insurance. We are considering John Mason. Aly
20. Thanks so much for all that info. That is our plan to get a holiday rental for a few weeks, and have a look round. My OH has been to Tas before, but it was a long time ago. I used to live in QLD in a little fishing village outside Bundaberg with a little local shop/post office, so I have a bit of an idea what the 'supermarket' would be like. Thanks also for the info on the weather and soil, all relevant, especially as we have been looking at some rental properties, some of which are on tank water only. This obviously could be an issue! Cheers Aly
21. So many choices about where to live. Initially we seriously considered the Huon Valley area. We are now looking at Orford area. From what I can gather, it gets heaps of tourists in summer. I looked at google maps and the beaches looked stunning. Would it take more than one hour to travel to Hobart? I believe they have a supermarket, I'm not sure what type, but I would imagine it would be small independent or IGA. If anyone has any knowledge or advise about the area, I would really appreciate it. Aly
22. Hi, we managed to open a westpac quite easily on line from the UK. I am sure their rules and regulations are all quite similar. If you open a westpac account, you have to turn up in a branch, (any brach apparently) with your passport as proof of ID, within 12 months of opening the account. It all seems quite easy. You are best to use a comparison site tho, depends what you want your account for. Aly

Hello

Hoping to arrive in Tasmania next March. Looking to find a rental semi rural 50km out of Hobart. Looking at previous posts on PIO, there appear to be some places to be avoided. If anyone could tell me of their experiences or any advice, would be gratefully received.

OH is a citizen and I have perm residency, so not waiting for visas or anything. We have been away from Oz for nearly 7 yrs now, so expecting to see some differences!
