1. As the title says.. Anyone moving over to Perth in April? I'm David, 33, from Glasgow. Moving over on my own to try start afresh. Just interested to hear of other people moving over around the same time and their situations. David

6 weeks in Oz

I must say.. I am getting slightly nervous the more I hear people going on about how expensive Perth is. Perhaps a bit of naivety on my part but I just assumed that all the major cities would be much the same on prices but it seems Perth is getting branded as the most expensive!!
3. Are you still in the UK? If so then I wouldn't bother with an agency. I have tried to contact several and sent my CV away to several and they don't respond. I would just cut out the middle man and apply direct to the companies. David
4. I have just been looking on the internet but agencies in Oz don't reply to you when you are still in the UK. I think the best approach is to apply to companies direct, cutting out the middle man so to speak. Whats your experience in again? Is it Civils or build?
5. Congrats mate. I knew it wouldnt be long until you were gramted it. So whats the plan of attack now then?
6. I just don't like seeing 'in your face' racism as when I go to Australia in a few weeks I am hoping I don't experience it!
7. ...And I don't think your car would be in good shape for a partlicularly long period of time!!
8. Well I'm a Civil Engineer and have worked on large scale construction projects where you do get a lot of foreign workers, mainly polish and now a lot of Indian and I remember going into the canteen and there were posters up on the walls saying "British Jobs for British workers". I can imagine a few of the polish and indians would have felt it was directed at them. Their situation is no different from ours though.. Just going to another country to try make a better life for their family and self's. But true, as far as stickers on cars go. I have yet to see that in the UK. Not that I condone vandalism but they are going about things the right way if they want a sharp key scraped along the side of their cars ) David
9. Lets face it. You are going to get this kind of situation anywhere in the world. I'm sure skilled migrants coming from abroad to the UK have faced similar animosity. Its not just an 'Australian' thing! David
10. Thanks for the useful Info Eera. Yes, Health & Safety is definitely a common theme in today construction and mining sites. I shall make sure I dont get caught out with that one. Cheers
11. Hi, Just wondering if anyone on here has had a telephone interview with Thiess Mining? David
12. I went to last years show at the SECC and to be honest I wouldn't think you will gain much from going. It was mainly a market for agents to get business. It was full of long queues and also presentations advertising how good a country Australia is to live in etc. I won't be going anyway David
13. Hi Kerry. From applying for skills assessment to visa being granted took around 7 months
14. Oh yeh. I know URS from over here. They are a consultancy. That's a different field from me. I work for contractors on site. Thanks for the info and hope you have a great time in Australia.
15. Excellent. Can I ask who yours husbands prospective employer is? David
16.

Hi Stacey. No I havent and for some reason I dont expect to. Dont feel they will take on alot of people over here

17. Congratulations on the visa grant mate. I was originally going to head to melbourne but for some reason I chose Perth. Yes, I will look at hostels for the first few days although I must say I like my comforts and dont fancy sharing a dorm with strangers. What are you going over to do?
18. Im sure it will get approved. Best of luck and Im sure you will be there in no time.
19. Thats exactly what Im doing. Companies dont seem too interested in employing you when you are still in the UK
20. As you are heading out 2 months before me you shall have to let me know how it goes.. Im interested to know what its like trying to get a house share etc..
21. Hi Craig. My vetassess took 14 weeks to be processed. At that time I was being advised it would be 10 to 12 weeks processing time. I think via your agent you can ask for it to be speeded up due to circumstances i.e. turning an age outwith the points system. I would ask your agent about this. David
22. Nice one. I'm of the same opinion of you. Where you heading for?
23. Inspirational reply to my post there crocod. I'm in the same mindset as you were when you started your adventure. I'm 33 and just haven't settled here in Glasgow. I recently split from a 5 year relationship and just made the decision to try do something with my life elsewhere and with the economy having the construction industry on its knees over here and feeling like my job is always on a shakey nail (I'm a civil engineer) I just thought it was worth a go! I'm excited although very nervous at the same time. I have no job lined up yet so I'm just going to fly over in April and apply for jobs once I'm on Perth soil. David
24. Hello people, I will be moving from Scotland to Perth in April. I am moving over totally on my own and I don't know anyone over there. I am just wondering if anyone else is or has for the matter flew over to the other side of the world in an attempt to start a better life? And if so, how did life turn out for you? and how did you find the first few weeks being in a foreign environment not knowing anyone. Thanks David
25. From what I was informed by my agent when I went through the application process.. It has to be the full certificate. I just phoned the relevant local office for birth certificates and got mine sent out within a week at the cost of £30 David
