  1. Oh that's a horrible thing to happen to you. What scumbags!! I don't wish anything nasty to happen to anyone but a taste of their own medicine wouldn't go amiss!! Hope you're okay now. Angie
  2. Hi Val. We are loving Birkdale. It's such a lovely area with loads of walks. We try and take a walk along the esplanade every morning - it's so peaceful and starts the day off perfectly. Not long now till you are here. It would be great to arrange a get together when you have settled in. Val and Matt have given me their mobile number so I could try and arrange a date, time and venue to suit all of us. Take care - Angie x
  3. Hi Val We haven't seen a house auction yet but I bet it would be very interesting. I'd go along to one if we could get a bargain! ha ha! Looking at house prices around here I think we will have to rent rather than buy. There does seem to be jobs going for our sort of age group if you're flexible on the type of work you're looking for. Ted has applied for two which are fairly local and is still looking out for anything else advertised. I understand most companies here are not quick in responding to applications but I'll let you know if we hear anything. I agree Val it is difficult not to be concerned about finances unless you come over here with millions! Australia is not the cheapest place to live but the bargains are out there if you shop around. We are lucky that we have the internet to research everything. Talking of research I really need to sort out our UK Tax - I assume we won't have to pay any now that we are not living and working in the UK unless anyone knows otherwise! Take care Angie x
  4. Hi Val. We didn't get to the halloween parade in the end. They were forecasting a storm and we weren't sure if it would go ahead so reluctantly decided not to go. We did get the storm at 6pm, the time they predicted! Do you know if the parade got cancelled in the end? Those 4 weeks till you fly out will just whizz by - you'll soon be here enjoying this lovely weather too! Angie x
  5. Hi Kim. So pleased to hear your good news about the job. Congratulations! It sounds as though you have settled in so well. We have only been here just under a week so still adjusting to the Oz way of life. We have bought a car and registered with Medicare but there are still quite a few things to sort out. We are staying with our Daughter and SIL and it's lovely to see the grandchildren and, like you, being around to help out. We are taking the kids to a Haleoween parade in Manly (Qld) and afterwards I believe there is a free open air movie being shown in the park. Aren't we lucky to have this lovely climate to enjoy these outside activities! Our container arrives next month - really looking forward seeing our possessions again! Angie
  6. Hi there. After we had our medicals and police checks done it was approximately 2 months before our visas were granted but I guess it does vary slightly with each case. Hope this helps. Angie
  7. Yes we found it really easy too Phoebe and just the same when you come to validate the account in person. We found the staff in the main NAB Brisbane branch so friendly and helpful. Angie
  8. Hi Phoebe We just opened a classic account with an i-saver which has better rate of interest. Those were the only two on offer as I recall. Hope this helps. Angie
  9. Ho Phoebe I am so sorry to hear of your ongoing health problem. I hope your situation improves for you soon. We arrived in Oz yesterday and had a shock how much the grandchildren have grown since we saw them in the summer last year. Skype is great but you can't beat the 'real' thing! We opened our bank account with NAB earlier this year and have been gradually transferring money every since when the exchange rate seemed favourable. As previousl posts have mentioned the interest rates here are so much better than in the UK so we are at least getting a good return on our money. We've an apppointment to see the bank in Brisbane tommorow to validate the account and start drawing money out. Lots to do still but for the time-being we are just enjoying the experience and getting used to our new surroundings. Take care and all the best! Angie x
  10. That would be lovely Val. See you soon! Take care - Angie and Ted x
  11. Hi Val and Matthew. Yes you are quite right our flight is tomorrow the 19th! We have had a busy few days saying our goodbyes and sorting out the last minute things. So many mixed emotions - it's not a easy process is it? I have been popping in now and again reading the posts and saw that you were looking at a property. So pleased to hear that you have had your offer accepted! Can't believe how much you have done in 3 weeks! Looking forward to meeting up and enjoying that wine/beer in the sunshine! Take care and see you soon! xx
  12. Hi Moira We were asked to provide this form too but we were not using an agent so we got in touch wth our CO and he confirmed that we didn't need it. I think it's just the standard wording they use when they contact you. Hope this helps. Angie
  13. Great news Val. So pleased you got there in the end. ha ha! See you soon! Angie x
  14. Hi Val. Good to hear you both got there okay! Looking forward to joining you there soon. Angie xx
  15. Safe journey to you both. Can't quite believe this day has finally arrived! See you very soon in Oz! Angie and Ted xx
  16. Oh No Val! What a shame. They don't make it easy do they? We moved money over to our daughter's account and she paid on our behalf with a bank cheque. It will work out fine I'm sure. Just the final hurdle now! Angie x
  17. Glad everything went okay with the packers Val. I would like to wish you Bon Voyage now as we are on holiday in Devon with my brother when you leave and I'm not sure we will have an internet connection. All the very best and see you on the other side of the pond! Angie xxx
  18. Hi Tab. It's a date then. I will keep in touch via PIO - There are so many lovely people on this site and I feel I have already made good friends before we even get to Oz! How lovely is that! We haven't quite retired. We are both 60 and would like to find some kind of work when we are there. I am a Book-Keeper and Ted is an Engineer although he took voluntary redundancy 10 years ago and has worked part time in a school ever since. It's difficult to judge how much money we are going to need to survive on until we receive our state pension so I think we are just going to wait and see how it goes. We are not even comtemplating that it won't work out - going back is not an option for us - well maybe for a holiday! Our only regret is that we are leaving our son, brothers, sistersand other family members but perhaps some will come and visit us - I hope so. We look on this as a brand new start and feel so lucky that at our time of life we have been given the chance to do it!! Yes I'm sure you are going through the same feelings and concerns that we have experienced but you know Tab sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith! Good luck with everything! Angie xx
  19. Hi Val Could well work out better for you selling next year if the housing market picks up. It has to change soon surely!! Bet you're looking forward to munching that new granddaughter when she arrives!! We managed to get a good deal with Singapore Airlines too - never travelled with them before but we have heard good reports. Look forward to meeting you soon. Angie xx
  20. Hi John and Eirian. Good to hear from you and so pleased to hear that you are already quite settled! You are quite right about how things really speed up at the end and good advice about getting rid of unwanted things early on. We did just that - started about 15 months ago and so glad we did. It also helps with the process of 'letting go'. Please keep us updated - we would love to know how things are going. Angie
  21. Hi Tab. If you come to the same area we will have to keep in touch for sure! Best wishes. Angie x
