  1. Just did a UKForex at $1.59 which proberly means it will be $1.60 tomorrow. I think I would need a G&T then. :twitcy:
  2. Have to agree to both points of your post, all I see out here is multi billion dollar projects being planned and started to export even more goods to China and the rest of Asia, if USA and UK plus Europe go into resession and China slows down there is still so much demand in Asia that I do not see Australia getting hurt much. The one point Australia has against it is affordabilty of housing as people are borrowing at very high multiables of earnings, but the Oz government are in a good postion that they can adjust their base rates up or down to help, the UK is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Off to Centrelink this morning to get some help in tapping into these Oz dollars in exchange for Wanda's labour (and maybe mine:twitcy:). Les
  3. That's what I have always used, they have always just pipped Moneycorp. Every little helps.
  4. There is an option to pay the 2nd Vac in London in Pounds sterling which people have used when the exchange rate is poor. That rate is fixed for 6 months so it depends on what the rate is at the time you have to make payment as to whether it is best to pay in London or Perth in $s. Sorry but I do not know the current rate of exchange that London is using to give you the amount you must pay in pounds.:wideeyed: Using a Forex company to send money other to an Oz account (maybe your child's account?) seems unnerving at first but once set up is no more difficult than paying a bill online in the UK (just a bigger bill ). If you go to the Forums page and scroll down their is a section marked Money and Finance which may help or just ask on here. Going to your bank and getting them to exchange money normally costs more. Regards Les :wubclub::wubclub:
  5. Hi Everyone, Wanda and I have finally made it to sunny Oz, I have just finished reading Septembers posts and for a short time thought I had signed on to B.E. by mistake but it looks like the 'Poacher' has not been made the 'game keeper' and peace restored. Just spent the last 2 days getting driving licences, medicare, bank accounts, phones etc sorted before we look at a car and a rental. We are staying with our son and d-i-l so no rush with our container not due until October. Lovely spring weather in Brisbane so it has been shorts and t-shirts for the last 3 days which is a sight better than the weather we left behind in the UK. Bali turned out to be the ideal place to unwind on the way over to here and with only 2 hours time difference from Qld not too bad on the body clock. People bound for Perth would find it even better with only a short flight away and no time difference. Still in the holiday mode at the moment but the reality of what we have done will soon kickin.:twitcy: Regards Les
  6. Never found the fitting all that good so have been chopping off UK plugs on some items, taking Uk multi plugs extension leads and will just put a Oz plug on them.
  7. Hi Steve and Aileen, Good to hear you are on your way, we pipped you at the post with John Mason packing us on the 30th & 31st August, complete on the 1st and fly on the 2nd September. Wanda is taking us the long way round via Bali so we don't hit Brisbane until 21st Sept so I hope it's stopped raining by then. All the best for the future. Les & Wanda
  8. We sold our car on Autotrader Wednesday, put on in the morning and had cash buyer by 3pm:shocked: Cost £9.99 for what was perhaps a rather to quick result. :twitcy: burning our bridges now, buses and taxi's until 02/09/11.
  9. Rate getting close to $1.58 ($1.579 for $25,000 now) as good as it has been for a few weeks, and better than I got last night. :twitcy:
  10. The news of your demise is fortunately premature. Glad you made a full recovery.:biglaugh: Originally Posted by ariomart "I miss Sirmatt": Moira Les "We all do, he came to a sticky end in the great Vegemite disaster of 2011 when trying for the bottom jar in a 20ft Coles display. RIP Wanda did find a connection to Bali (I didn't know she could work the interweb :twitcy:) so after a couple of nights in Singapore for me to top up on Chicken Satay, I'm being dragged along to Bali for 3 weeks. So we don't hit Brisbane until near the end of September then we will be in touch, leave a few jobs vacant please. :wubclub:
  11. Today's update. We have gone with John Mason, the current popular choice and the best price for us at £3845 for a full, sole use 20ft, next up was P.S.S. at £4032 and 3rd at £4140 was Anglo Pacific. Crown and Pickfords were just being silly at £5000 each with Pickfords taking the P by saying we needed to share a 40ft. All quotes for the same stuff. I asked the first 3 today to re-quote and J.M. knocked £150 off to come in below £4000 so they got the booking. We have gone with Letton Percival for the insurance as at 1.5% they easily beat all companies with £493.83 for £31,000 for better cover including mildew and sets as standard. In a few months time we will tell you if we made the right choice.
  12. Have faith, we thought the same and booked to go out in the May half-term to validate, the person who 'popped round' to view in 10 minutes the night before we flew out to Oz turned out to be the person who bought it. Return in May is as cheap as one way in September. The bit that gets you down are the questions and the time in between replies plus in our case 7 different exchange dates coming and going and 3 different completion dates before a new final one. And how do solicitors manage to write an email that reads like something will happen and then ignore that when it does not? Best of luck with the sale. :wubclub:
  13. Sleeps, now that is a luxury. Thanks for your thoughts at a stressful time for all. Have to say we are glad we did this while in the UK, the questions asked now about property are maddening to answer even while we are here let alone if had left the house and tried to do it from Oz. We supply planing permission for building work, they want building regs, we say they were not needed when the work done, they offer insurance, they say the land 'may' be contaminated can we prove otherwise? They offer insurance. We prove it's not so :Randy-git: them. ....and why do solicitors email at 4.50pm and are then 'out of the office' when you reply? :arghh:
  14. Wanda and I are please to announce that we will be homeless from the 1st September and will be forced to roam the streets until a suitable flight can be arranged. I thought we would fly right through to Brisbane but it appears Wanda wants to stop off at a place called Bali (without the sugar) so I just hope there are no connections left. :jiggy: So much to do and so little time. :twitcy: Les
  15. Know how you feel, 3rd day for us the that the exchange on our house has not gone through. :wubclub:
  16. Hi chudleighval, I always refer to the rate to buy at, not the mid price, and I normally quote for modest amounts of $25,000, of course if you are moving house buying money you will get a better rate. If you was offered AUD $s at $1.62 today I hope you bought some. :wubclub:
  17. Well I missed the $1.60 in the wee small hours but it's $1.599 at the moment for those who are feeling lucky. :wubclub:
  18. We did the same building up funds in our son's off-set mortgage account, I don't remember him ever thanking us. :twitcy: Just bought some more $s that will end up in his off-set account as $1.584 is a whole lot better than last week, plus internet talk of the UK getting a credit rating down grade like the USA may not keep this trend going (which probably means it will be $1.60 tomorrow). P.S. sounds like a very generous C.C. who issues it?
  19. Morning all, the AUD $ has continued to drift against the £ after it's weekend rest and is moving through $1.577 in an upward tread (at the moment). In practical terms you now now buy $25,000 for less than £16,000 (it touched £17,000 a few weeks ago). Can't give any advice but in February when we paid our second vac we had to top up our Oz funds at this rate which happened to be the lowest rate of exchange in almost 3 years that we used. It has gone from bad to worse and is now back to bad but getting better. I have always felt the best option is to go for the best average you can hope to get, so now maybe a time to dip a toe in the troubled waters, unless you feel lucky and wait for a few dollars more, well do you feel lucky?
  20. Why do you phone them Pete, have you not tried the direct online booking? Do they give you a better rate?
  21. We all do, he came to a sticky end in the great Vegemite disaster of 2011 when trying for the bottom jar in a 20ft Coles display. It was how he would have wanted to go, spread out by his favourite spread. :twitcy: RIP :wubclub:
  22. Best of luck with that. They say if you do not insure for the year the monthly rate which would be used is higher than the annual rate, plus they love to add their admin charge. I have always bought car insurance via Topcashback and have just been paid £60 cash-back for using Hastings Direct which had the cheapest policy anyway so if their charge is to high to bother with cancelling early I wont feel to Peed about it.
  23. Hi David, I send it by BACs online from home at no charge. Nationwide has an individual online transaction transfer of £10,000 so if you want to send £12,000 you send £10,000 and then £2,000 to UKForex's account held at Barclays Moorgate one after the other using your Nationwide key pad each time to confirm the payment. You have to set up your Nationwide account to pay the UKForex Barclays account with their sort code, account number and your client reference. You will find it very difficult to trade over the weekend, but you can trade up to about 10pm tonight and from 10pm Sunday night. Other Forex companies may trade at the weekend but often set a poor rate as the trading rooms are shut. Best of luck with your trade. :wubclub:
