  1. Just another thought. If Jenson Button has life insurance does it follow him around or would it pay out wherever he is in the world. I cannot see any link to your life insurance and where you live except for possible tax reasons. When I sold our endowment policies a few years back at auction they were mostly being bought by Germans, so if I snuff it in the UK or Oz some Herman is going to be very happy wherever I am located.
  2. Hope you had a good flight, I wondered why the weather had suddenly got so much better here. P.S. Don't forget to get the corks fitted to them there hats. :biglaugh:
  3. Singapore Airlines have replied with a very wordy email, long story short, they will give you 40kg on a permanent unstamped, unused visa once only. You confirm that at check-in desk, bad news is if you get it wrong they then say how much it will cost at the excess baggage rate of £38 per kilo, = £760 each. We will be OK for this flight but no airmiles as we have a discounted ticket so we now have a enough airmiles for a one way flight from Singapore to Perth but no chance of adding to it.
  4. Nice idea but to late as already booked with Singapore, our favourite airline.
  5. Did anyone flying on a validation trip get the 40kgs allowance with Singapore airlines? I know that we will not get it with the final one way trip (once we validate) just wondered if they did it on a return trip. P.S. Don't believe the adverts for Air Asia being cheap, they wanted over £2,000 for the same week.
  6. Can I fit in a Fork Lift Drivers course too? I'll pass on the Pole Dancing Course on account of me back being jet-lagged. :Randy-git:
  7. New question Guys. Our bottle has gone with this slow housing market and instead of waiting out the rest of this year hoping to get a sale and then buy the one way ticket we have decided to go out and validate our visa at the end of May while the cheap flight offers are still on. We can fit a week in during the half term even though it means 4 days of flying out of 8 days, it will get the job done and dusted. As we have the CPV visa in our new passport do we need to get a visitors visa as well? I know SirMatt did this so maybe he can tell us what he did? :notworthy:
  8. When our CO did not answer our email(s) we emailed the question to the main email address and asked if our CO's email address was working, she replied that day! Just after appointment our CO had 6 weeks off on holiday so it may not be unusual for them to disappear for weeks at a time.
  9. Phoebe, at best the interest will be about $700 in a year gross on the bond, if your s-i-l is taxed at 38% (for earnings from $80,000 up to $180,000) then you/he will end up with about $434 at the end of the year, it will not make his tax any higher on the rest of his earnings. Are you sure he is being straight with you? :nah: Something is not correct with the conclusion that the interest will raise his tax payment on his earnings to a higher level than if he had not paid the bond. He will of course pay tax on the interest but then most citizens do in any country. Lets just say he is at the maximum of his tax band earning $180,000 p.a. If you then add the interest from the bond to his income then that will be taxed at 45cents in the $ but his other earnings will not be, so the bond interest will not change his tax position only what is earned from the bond. :wubclub:
  10. Hi Phoebe, There is not really a problem, the bank will deduct tax from the interest so what is left will be his/yours to do with whatever you wish. We/all of us CPVs cannot get the money tax free (just like in the UK on a normal bank account) so there is not really a dilemma. The worst possible outcome is that the interest plus earnings pitch into the next tax band which would result in less interest paid out net (again similar to the UK if you become a higher rate tax payer you have a second bite taken out of your savings interest). Look at this this way, when we first started this visa malarkey we did not even know they would pay any interest on the bond so every little helps. :wubclub:
  11. Good point Matt, lots of times people forget to allow for the cost at Oz. PSS offered us a 'free' tea chest of goods that would be air freighted to the local arrival airport and then mentions without any fees the we would be liable for all charges, so much for 'free'. :nah: What happened to you also happened to our son and I thought he paid more than $99 to get his stuff back, plus a long trip to the airport.
  12. When you get to the Gold Coast there must be a job opportunity in one of the Theme Parks for a Wild West Show, keep practicing. I''ll load the bullets, you keep firing them. :biglaugh:
  13. I'll tell AQIS there is a special fumigation proceedure used for that.
  14. Why do I find the need to get a rope and look for a tall tree when some mentions country music? Please don't tell me they have it in Oz.
  15. Don't turn this into a Marmite thread please. I love ......... :twitcy:
  16. Ah, but you are a model of efficiency Steve, Wanda's shoes would take up more space than that.
  17. :idea:What Wanda has done with all the assorted boxes of gear we want to take to Oz is to make 2 false double beds out of the boxes and then cover them with double quilt and pillows etc, so when people come to view the house they can A, see the bedroom can take a double bed and B, they don't see a pile of boxes. Also the garden shed groans with more bits but it helps keep the house looking good. We are now in the position of de-cluttering what we have already de-clutted. Sold a Wendy House and a large climbing frame this week so a few more £s in the fighting fund. Anyway I didn't fit in them anymore.:biglaugh:
  18. :swoon: There really is no need to worry about time, they wont say no if you are going to pay them, the deadline is a red herring that needlessly raises people's BP. When it suits them they give 49 days so just stay calm. :wubclub: :wubclub:
  19. For those looking at removal companies this thread and indeed forum is useful. http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/109264-shipping-company-poll.html
  20. If prices were the same Crown and John Mason would just get the nod, none of the companies were poor at what they told us. Pickfords gave a bit to much bull and we do not like the idea of a shared container. Pickfords warned us about taking our fridge and freezer because of possible CFCs and the cost of having the coolant changed, then when he had gone we read their paperwork that said an 'individual' was exempt from the rule (ours are new enough not to be a problem anyway). PSS did a bit of knocking the competition which lost him marks from Wanda (her pet hate). PSS and John Mason are £1000 under Crown and so for us are front runners. John Masons storage charge in Oz is double PSS if we require an extra month. Crown had the hardest job as they came first and we were able to ask more questions to those that came later but they misjudged me by saying they will give the dearest quote because they are the best, but are they truly worth 25% more? On the Insureyourmove site they say Crown and John Mason have the least number of claims. :wubclub:
