  1. If you don't mind what you do - there are always jobs for backpackers ( usually at a crappy wage but hey- ho- you get by!) in my year as a backpacker I worked in an asparagus packing plant, a print works, as a barmaid for accomodation, a kitchen hand, I worked on the show circuit selling hotdogs - a great little earner - I started in Cairns and followed the shows down to Brissie and the Gold Coast - great fun! And I even cleaned the bathrooms in a hostel for free accomodation - trust me- you will get jobs!! the hostels always have notice boards etc looking for workers. And yes, it's the best thing ever! You will love it. Good Luck!
  2. Hi, I work in Caboolture hospital..... I really wouldn't recommend the area- the houses are cheap for a reason! Caboolture has a bit of a reputation as a low socio- economic area and in my experience that seems to be the case. Of course there are good people there but a lot of undesirables..... Narangba is nice- stil a bit " country" in places which is quite nice. I don't know much about ningi except it is built on a marsh and is prone to floods and mozzies ( according to a friend who lives there!) good luck!
  3. Thanks everyone for your comments. All very useful to know, much appreciated.
  4. Hi, can anyone help me with this? if a person ( still a British citizen) returns to UK after 20 years would they be entitled to any benefits? i guess they would want to know if you had any assets etc but if you are coming back with nothing would they help you until you got a job? And reading another thread NHS should help with pre- existing conditions if you register with a GP first. the intent is to stay in Uk forever. Thanks in advance.
  5. Might just have to do some shopping RIGHT NOW!! see ya! And thanks
  6. I often send calendars with Aussie scenes/ wildlife / flowers etc. you can get them pretty cheaply and postage is not much and it's Aussie so it gives them a little taste of your new life. Good luck!
  7. Sounds like a real dilemma. I feel your pain, I agree with Quoll- London seems the place for you right now....you never know what opportunities are around the corner. I believe, if you're meant to be in Oz- something will happen to make it a reality, but maybe not just yet. enjoy your life, see what happens- it worked for me. I talked about moving to Oz for a long time then someone offered me a job and suddenly I was on my way..... good luck
  8. i lived in Brizzle for a while too ( I'm from Bath) it's a lovely part of the world - Gert Lush, you might say
  9. Hi, I live in North Brissy with My Aussie husband. been here nearly 5 years but I find myself without a good girly friend. As we are childless and I work full time, I don't have that opportunity to meet others. We are early 40's and enjoy all the usual things. Just want someone to reminisce with sometimes, who knows when I say "pants and vest" That's what I mean, and when I say Manchester I mean the city not the department....I could go on..... would be good to have someone to go to the movies with sometimes to see a chick flick ( macho Aussie bloke wouldn't be seen dead..) and if you like Corrie we could ge friends for life!!! Will you be my friend .?
  10. Hi- you can buy ventolin over the counter in Queensland- about $10 a pop from memory, but need a script for the ones containing steroids : )
  11. Hi Becky, I lived and worked in Bundy - at the Friendlies as a radiographer for a year. (I ledt for Brisbane 2 years ago) Firstly, the rriendlies is a really nice hospital- i think you will like it there= but it ain't the NHS- its a whole different kettle of fish, i'll let you work that out for yourself! Don't worry though - the staff are lovely. Now Bundy is a big country town, but it is a bit "backward"- shops close at 12 on saturday, don't open at all on sundays (although that is changing so I'm told!) and good luck trying to find a restaurant open after 9 pm on a saturday.... still, it's a friendly town - very child friendly so my mummy friends tell me! I would say bundy is a bit dull to live - look at Bargara - its just 20 mins drive to the hospital and its a pretty beach town- lots of nice wlks for your baby etc and a gorgeous beach-front play area they will love. Maybe you could ask someone from the hospital to find a place for you for the first month- my company (not the same employers as you) paid for my accomodation for the first month which was a great help- but even if they don't pay for it they might book it for you- worth a shot!~ I stayed at Alexanders on Woondooma street - cheap if you book it this far in advance- its clean and right opposite the hospital! Worth a look anyway. I hope this helps....as you probably worked out, Bundy wasn't for me but I was single at the time and there are no single men in that town Lol! But i have some good memories and made some very good frinds= I'm sure you will too! And from memory there were a couple of pommy nurses working there so you'll fit right in. Good luck and if there's anything else I can help with- just holler! Sj
  12. Oooh that is very helpful- will look into it tomorrow - off to bed now- head buzzing!!!
  13. Thanks lebourvellec- will speak to my boss tomorrow- watch this space.
  14. Hi Chris, hope you are settling in well. You are looking to meet new people - you should check out a website called Meetup- it is basically a website to meet people with similar interests, from expats to sporting interests to yoghurt making- you name it- theres a group out there for you!! it was great when i moved to brissie on my own- hope it has something on there for you good luck Sj
  15. Thanks Rammygirl, we have only been together 2 and a bit years-so I guess I'll be contacting my employers again.....
