Chall77
Could anyone please tell me how long I have to be resident in Australia before I can apply for citizenship and a passport please? I have PR but haven't moved yet and presume that the clock will start once I am actually residing down under. Any help is very much appreciated! Chall. ali
4 years before you can apply for citizenship. You can't apply for a passport until you've had the actual ceremony
Chall77
Thanks for this. I thought I had read somewhere on here you could start the application after 2 years??
blossom
No. Four years in total in Australia. At least the last year must have been as a pr (the other three can be on temp visas).
carlhall
It used to be two years, but it has been four years for some considerable time now.
abz123
Thanks for this. I thought I had read somewhere on here you could start the application after 2 years?? It used to be 2 but changed several years back. As well as the 4 years, there are restrictions on the number of days you can be absent from Australia during that period. VERYSTORMY
You must not have been out of Australia for more than a total of 12 months in the last 4 years and no more than 90 days in the 12 months prior to application. There is a tool on the citizenship web site that allows you to enter the dates of absence and calculates when you are eligible
