Brisbane Transport

Hi there,

We are a family of five in the UK who will be arriving in Brisbane on the 31st October on permanent visas.

At the moment we are still debating where to rent etc.

I have been told that the transport links into central Brisbane and Southside from the North Lakes/Mango Hill area are pretty poor.

Can anybody advise me on this please.

Another quick question, I am looking to change my car here in the UK prior to the move but have been told that I have got to have owned the car for 12 months before I can ship the car to Oz.

Again any feedback on this matter will be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Stevio.

Hi Stevio, Mango hill will be getting a train line and station soon, whether that is soon enough I do not know, are you set on the north side?

I would question getting a car in the UK for shipping out to OZ, have you considered all the hoops you will have to jump through and checked out all the costs? there are threads on this forum about this, worth checking out before you do anything else.

Cheers Keith.

An alternative to North Lakes area with better transport links is Ferny Hills, which is on a train line and closer to the city with affordable housing and in my opinion a nicer area.

Any particular reason why you wanted to live in North Lakes?

You mention transport links to the Southside. If you need to get there on a regular basis, for work and such like, then live over that way. Commuting to the Southside from the North will be a long pain in the butt - you have to cross over the river, and that can be a nightmare at peak times. Certainly Northlakes just to the Southside is a fair whack - it then depends where to from when you get over the bridge.

Thanks Keith,

We are not necessarily set on the north side in fact we are open to suggestions for nice places to live that could cater for our family.

Our daughter will be 3 years old in November and we are looking for a nice area that mum and daughter can enjoy whilst I seek work!

Nice schools/playgroups,friendly community, parks and reasonable proximity to shops etc.

Re the car, I have had a price for shipping my existing car over, I have a very low mileage Vauxhall Zafira but ideally I was looking at getting a diesel Mondeo or something similar, how do you feel that car prices in Oz compare to the UK Keith?

P.S Noted that you are from Leeds, I am from Oldham.....are you a Leeds Utd supporter?

Cheers

Steve

I looked at Ferny Hills after your post so thanks for that.

My stepdaughter was looking at North Lakes and although the properties look nice I have heard that it is full of brits!

Being a brit myself I don't have a problem with that although I would love to integrate with Australians and experience different cultures.

So we are really open to ideas of nice areas to live be it north or south.

If you're commuting to city choose somewhere you can walk to a train or a busway. Getting to city through traffic in a car can be tricky and parking charges some of the highest in the world. Plenty of nice commutable areas north and South of river but better to live the side you work on if you are driving. Cleveland is a nice area & commutable. You may be grateful for the Brits if you fancy getting out and socialising!!!

Hi Stevio, firstly the car, yes cars do tend to be more expensive here but I can not see any value in bringing a normal run-around to Aus, it will have to be assessed, approved and/or adapted to Aus requirements, there will be spares and repairs to consider too as well as any resale which would be difficult.

Regarding places to live, there are many on here that will tell you their or this/that suburb is better etc. so I will just tell you about the area where I live, we live at Thornlands/Victoria point, whilst at the time we 1st came here were considered out of the way it has certainly moved on, we have plenty of shops, restaurants, a ciniplex, pub and clubs, what could be in walking distance or just a 5 min drive depending on exactly where your house would be, we are 5 min to water and some form of beach (not your surfers type beach by a long shot) 5 min to the train station at Cleveland but it is a 1hr tip to the city!, and also bus's to the city. We are 40min by car to both the city and the top end of the Gold Coast (and we do either one regularly on weekends). There are heaps of parks and plenty of them with kids playgrounds, there are plenty of kindergardens, my niece and nephew (aussies) both went to local schools around here and are at university now (so assume good schools?). We enjoy our location and really can not see us needing to move unless for something more mind blowing for views and property, as other suburbs a really much of a muchness, but some are definite no no's so still need to be aware.

Your job location will have a bearing on where to live too, unless you don't mind the commuting. What is your line of work Stevio?

Sorry the hear your from Oldham, but things can only get better I suppose:tongue:. I am not a Utd supporter as such as I am more into rugby league, but they are my preferred team.

Cheers Keith.

Hey stevio

We live in Chermside on the northside, love living that side of the city and transport is great. However Chermside itself is becoming a concrete jungle with high rise apartments going up all over the place, houses being knocked down to build multi-occupancy homes on tiny plots - quite congested. Surrounding areas like Aspley and Kedron are a bit quieter, and we are considering a different suburb for buying which is finally on the horizon! I worked in South Brisbane for a time, and although I disliked the job, transport was easy, changing buses at Cultural Centre.

Good that you want to integrate! Although we knew a handful of British people when we first moved here we didn't go out much. These days most of our friends are Australian, we know people in every state except NT (!), and we go out every weekend whether into town or a friend's place :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Ferny Hills is great for frequent transport on the western urban train line (services every 15 mins), plenty of parking although it gets v congested at the station from what I've seen! Anywhere on that rail line into Windsor looks great but I live on the North Shore so only what I've observed.

North Lakes well catered for in terms of amenities but commute is not great. Highway into Brisbane (Gateway and Gympie Rd) get extremely congested at rush hour - Qlders start early so don't think you can beat them to it! ;-)

Second other commenters, get on a rail or busway service and you are going to have a much better commute! The busways in Brisbane are fantastic in my experience and really speed things up.

My personal favourites would be Kedron (East of Gympie Rd), Windsor, Clayfield, Mitchelton-Keperra-Ferny Grove, Everton Park, Sandgate and put towards Cleveland-Victoria Point.

Good luck

All great advice, but Windsor and particularly Clayfield I assume would be out of the budget if looking at North Lakes.

Its pretty easy to drive from north lakes to Narangba or Petrie train stations. finding a parking space is a pain in the neck but its not as bad as people make out. Things will be much better when the new railway is finished. I certainly wouldnt drive into the CBD or anywhere on the Gateway motorway from there at rush hour

Thanks again Keith, sorry for the late reply...just so busy at the moment.

After being in external sales for 23 years (Corporate/Industrial workwear & PPE) I completely changed my role after being made redundant and currently work in the funeral Industry!

I will however be trying to get back into my previous role once in Brisbane so If you know of anybody looking for a experienced external Salesman give me a shout.

My partner Wendy is a Chartered Accountant......hey Keith its been hot in Leeds and Oldham for nearly four weeks, what a summer!

Hi Stevio/Keith and Linda

We are moving to Wellington Point in 8 weeks (family of 4) around 10 mins away from the suburbs Keith and Linda are in. The main reason we chose the area was the commute to the city/airport, good schools, friendly community and it's just lovely there. A small beach but you don't have to go far for surf action.

I agree with the previous comments, we have been living in Canberra for 3 years and have some great Aussie friends but we still find we have way more in common with the POMS. Good luck with the decision and move.

Hi stevio, sorry can not help you on the job front, all I really know on your workwear etc is that there are a couple of larger companies around but also quite a few smaller almost 1 man band types too. Accountancy is similar but on a larger scale.

Glad the weather is hot up north, must say it is quite hot here too:smile:

Good luck with everything.

Safe journey Wellypoint, a good move I think!
