Cars, Car Insurance and Rego

Looking at motors once we arrive and been checking out Wangara 4x4 (unless anyone knows of any other 4x4 specialist garage around the Perth area - we're looking at living in the Rockingham area). Checked through carsales.com and autotrader etc, gonna need something sizeable for the family and want to avoid another MPV - still getting over the kia sedona we had:wacko:.

So we have seen a couple of things we like (Holden Jackaroo for example) and have got an insurance quote from the Budget automated site (half the price of the RAC's insurance quote). Was wondering if Budget were a reasonable place to get car insurance (3.5 ltr 4x4 $363 fully comp for the year) or if anyone could recommend anywhere else. Now on this note I'll need to pay online and as we are buying within the first 3 days of arriving I dont think we will have my aussie bank cards although I will have activated our westpac account. Am I correct in thinking I will be able to use my UK card to pay an Oz car insurance company online for a car insured at an Oz address. I cant see it makes any difference but just thought I'd check.

Lastly just where do I look to sort out Rego when we get the motor and is the RAC the most reasonable break down service in WA??**

Ok found the site for Rego but whats this about paying 3rd party insurance fees??? Do you still pay that if you have fully comp insurance already??

Thanks guys

You quote sounded reasonable. Why not email the insurance company and ask them if it is possible to pay the way you would like to pay.

Third party personal injury is included with your rego.

Third party property damage is included with your fully comp insurance or you can take out just 3rd party property damage only.

Can not help with the Insurance Companies as I live in Sydney - But make sure you are comparing the same thing - one insurance may have a $500 deductible the other $2000 Also read what you are covered for in the Policy --- Secondly re credit cards as long as the transaction is approved nobody cares

3rd Party insurance - is part of your Rego When you buy a new Car the dealer will register the car

this is a Government Tax per year the Government also charges for the number plate

But before you get the plates you must have 3rd Party Insurance again the dealer will do this -

3rd Party = 3rd Party Property damage generally unto a limit of $10m covers road damage buildings etc any 3rd party property damaged in an accident

3rd Party insurance stays with the car ie if you sell a car you cannot cancel the 3rd party insurance the insurance stays in force until the rego runs out or the number plates are handed in

If you buy a second hand car which is registered when the rego needs to be renewed you get a Re register form for the Government plus from the Insurance company a 3rd party policy bill for the following year -- you can change the insurance company but the car will not be registered until proof of 3rd party insurance has been paid is shown to the registering office

Hope this helps

Thank you both for you help - the excess was just $250 on the policy.

So just to clarify... the rego is worked out in WA initiall at 14.75 per 100kg car weight plus a couple of other flat fees about $15 each. Do you then need to add the compulsory third party personal injury insurance to this figure ie: (figures just for arguments sake)

14.75 x 20 (2000kg car) = $295 + 2 flat fees = $325 then do I have to add the £235.59 (for WA) to get my final figure for rego of 560.59??? - Then on top of this and seperate I need my own fully comp or TPFT insurance!

So rego is just like road tax with insurance built in???

I also think I understand from the site that independant of rego once the car is transferred I will recieve a bill for stamp duty - is that right for a second hand car also?

Thanks for your patience - struggling a bit with this and dont want to get seen off by anyone whe we arrive!

Cheers

Licensing interstate or overseas vehicles

At the site above is the charges for Registering the car in W.A.

What you end up with is

Government charges for registering the car for one year about $275

Stamp duty of sale value of the car at 2.75% therefore on $20,000 car = $550.00

3rd party Insurance about $175.00

So once you have paid $1000 you car drive on the road (550+175+275)

These are ball park figures only !!!!!

BUT YOU HAVE NO COMPRESSIVE Insurance

which covers stolen accident damage fire etc

So that is an extra cost

NB sorry I made an mistake in an earlier post 3rd Party covers the cost of people hurt in an accident not property

You don't have to pay stamp duty on the transfer of a used car right away, they will send you a bill for this when the seller of the vehicle has sent in the papers signed by both you and the seller. It is calculated at 3cents in the dollar on the cost of the vehicle plus a charge of I think $14, used to be $13 but it has gone up.

If I remember right you are heading to Rockingham, there is a traffic office there, get in there early though or you could be in a long queue. The bigger the vehicle the dearer the rego per year. They say bigger vehicles cause more road damage. Your 3rd party personal injury is covered in the rego and is compulsory. Private insurance ISN'T compulsory in WA.

RAC are the only breakdown service in WA. If you are a member of the RAC you will get discount on your insurance. Always ask if thats the best price they can offer you for your insurance, they may knock a bit off. I have found in the past you get a better deal if you ring rather than getting a quote on the internet. You can get a covernote as soon as you have found the vehicle you wish to buy, over the phone.

You can check if there is money owing on the vehicle or if it has been written of and rebuilt at the website for Registered Encumbered Vehicles, REVS https://bizline.docep.wa.gov.au/revs/

I just had a thought, you won't have to pay any rego if it hasn't expired on the vehicle you buy, the rego stays with the vehicle, so factor that into the price you pay for your car, if theres almost 12 months left that is quite a big saving, but if it's due for renewel you could be up for about $500 more on the price of the car after you have bought it.

You go to the same traffic office to get your Oz drivers license.

Thanks again might have to see about bringing the price down a bit dependning on the rego left to then, I beleive its the done thing to haggle over the price?
