calNgary
Hi you are supposed to be residing in the country when you apply and also need an Australian address to have the number sent too. It takes a couple of weeks on average to come through so doesnt really hold you up at all. Cal x
PositivePixie
Like Cal says, you can't apply from the UK, its joined up with your passport and they can 'see' as it were if you are in the country or not (and you have to be in the country). It doesn't take long to apply for once you are there, I think you can find out what the number is immediately (if they don't tell you in an email/online when you do it that is), by phoning them up, and again like Cal says it takes a couple of weeks for the card to come through apparently. You have something like 4 weeks or something at least before it has implications on tax/wages, so even if you have a job that you start the day you land, you should be ok. We'll be doing ours in 11 days and counting, so can let you know then
Guest Guest31881
Just a note about TFN, when you know the number, make sure you tell your bank, if you don't then any interest earned will be taxed at a high rate. you get it back when you do the tax returns but it can be a right pain.
