How complicated is the online application and can my wife and I apply together?

Sounds like a silly question and we are at the infancy of our application for permanent migration, but I've heard a few people question the ease of

applying online as opposed to using an agent?

If we had the money, yes using an agent would be our choice but I feel that money could be put towards for example shipping our belongings etc...

We are from Northern Ireland and have three kids 3, 2 and 1 (well we are Irish!!)

I am a joiner/carpenter and also a fully trained tree surgeon (arborist) My wife is a teacher (specialising in pupils with learning difficulties)

Both our jobs are on the skills list and I'm wondering can we apply as a family taking both our jobs into consideration?

Also what is the most suitable visa for us?

I have a brother and his family and 4 of my fathers brothers and sisters all live in Melbourne and thats where we hope to settle. I don't know how family sponsoship really works and what is involved on their part as I wouldn't want to burden anyone but any info would be greatly appreciated.

So glad to have stumbled across this site, its fantastic and a lot of questions I wanted to ask have already been answered!! Keep up the good work!!

Hi, only one of you needs to be the main application - the other partner and your kids go as dependents on the form.

Family sponsorship practically no longer exists (unless it is for remote / rural ares, of which Melbourne is not), so there is no benefit from your family already being here.

The two most likely visas that would fit your circumstance are the 175 or 176 - you can read about them here: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/visa-options-outside.htm

My suggestion would be that you try the visa wizard and see what it spits out: http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/

It's easy to do the online application. You will need to spend some time studying the requirements to apply, which documents you need to provide, etc, but the time invested in this is well worth the several thousand you can save by not using a migration agent.

Just had a look at the 176 and it says I can be sponsored by an eligible relative living in Australia? What does this involve on their part?

I realise that there are no points anymore for having a relative in Oz but I think I qualify anyway as my job is on the SOL. Would this speed

things up as opposed to the 175 visa? Many thanks for the repilies so far Peter.

We are in the south and have done it ourselves and found it ok- bit annoying at times esp when you have to obtain stuff from thrid parties like universities and past employers. We have a migration expert though who has helped us and been invaluable (note there are only 2 registered in IRel) .We have met her twice- she went through everything with us for a charge of 95euro and basically talked us through wat we should do first and helped us avoid the pit falls

We are about to submit this week and will have her look over our application before we lodge to check it over - for this she charges us 150euro.

Like others have suggested read through those immi sites.

You basically need to ensure you have enough points ie the 65 points.

For a relative to sponsor you they must be a citizen, like they cant be there on a working hol visa.

I agree dont go paying thousands to some company to do it....if you have half a brain and are very careful and with this forum- youll be fine!

................

To start; If both of you are eligible then just go though your points each- it might be easier say for your wife to be the main applicant say if she gets more points for age, educ qualifications or you with age , experience.....u get the picture! As others have said only one person needs to be the main applicant and rest goes on that application :)

Also you'll need to get your qualifications assessed and all this takes time....esp if its VETASSESS! Im saying this because in July changes are occuring with the visa application so yourd want to try and get your applic in before then as it becomes an expression of interest then- meaning even if you are on the demand lists DIAC will invite you to apply for visa so no guarantees anymore.

Hope this helps.

They don't need to be a citizen, just a PR. But since July 2011 (apart from regional sponsored visas) there are no points awarded for family sponsorship.

You will require occupation on SOL 1 to go 175 or 176 family sponsor, going down the 176 family sponsor wont be any faster than 175, can be little slower as there are less family sponsored places. But if you go down the 176 family sponsor - you have review rights if visa is rejected, there are no review rights for 175.
