Moving to melbourne

Hello, we are looking to move to Melbourne, next yr visa permitting! We have come on here to begin making new friends, and getting to know people before we make the biggest move of our lives, wanting to make the move more easier by talking to people that have made the move and can help us!!!

I am a newly qualified nurse currently working in ICU, and my partner soon to be husband works in IT. Therefore if anyone has any advice of good hospitals or IT companies it would be greatly appreciated. We have looked at areas to live in once we get there such as South Frankston and Point Cook although as we have never been so would like some guidance on this too!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you are a nurse you should be able to pick and chose where you live. Are you a couple or do you have children? If you don't have children then I would recommend looking closer to the city.

Hi, we are a couple getting married in June this year! My partner is the main visa applicant as I am a newly qualified nurse so haven't got as many years experience for the application. Were are awaiting for confirmation of his skills, all being well should be over soon to start our new lives. Really excited about it! As part of our visa application we have to say where we want to go why etc, would be great for some guidance!

Ok I'm not sure on your age but South Frankston, Point Cook etc are more family areas, if I was you I would be looking at closer to the city, South Yarra is perfect but may be too expensive, you could look at some of the Bayside suburbs.

Hi as a nurse you're probably more in demand and therefore on the skills list! It takes months to get ur registration recognised by AHPRA so you should start the process and at least when u have that you have the choice if who becomes the main applicant .... Whichever is in demand at the time. Specialist nurses like ICU will be sought after newly qualified or not!! I'm a nurse and my family and I are heading to Melbourne end of jan. have job and registration just waiting for 457 visa and then we're off! I went through plexus medical and they've been super ! Good luck with the process it's a lot of work but hopefully worth it... I'll let u know ;))

Ok thankyou for your help,we will more than likely move near the city in the beginning. We just want to talk to people that have made the move, and make friends! Although its an amazing thing to do its scary, I've had friends move to Perth that used this site and has made some really good friends, so were hoping to do the same!

Thanks moldec1999 ! Am new to this! We have been to numerous emigration fairs that have been telling me that they don't want newly qualified nurses! That is good to know and I'll look into that company. Which part are you planning on living in? As part of our application e have to say which suburb we want to move to and why showing that we have researched into the prices of living etc! (its not easy to choose) Good luck, it will be good to keep in touch let us know how you all get on. Good luck :)

Hi, we too are originally from Liverpool, now living in Warrington, possibly moving to Melbourne later in the year. My hubby is in IT too (infrastructure). I've been looking at Point Cook, Sanctuary Lakes and the Berwick areas.

Which part of Liverpool do you liv, we were in Aintree for at 8 yrs.

There's a great bunch of people on here and you will gain so much info as well as friends, I now have friends in most parts of Oz, all of which I made from this site.

Hi, we're moving to mornington as I'll be working as practice nurse . I qualified over 15 years ago ( feel old now;)!! Even if your hubbie intends on being main applicant I'd still look at starting ur registration it can take 6 months especially if you're not sponsored. At least then you can even work agency when in oz to get a feel for where u want to go. We chose mornington as its close to beach etc as we have young children. Cost of living not as high as CBD so that's a big plus!!!Will keep u updated on our developments but we!re getting excited now as not too long to go !

If you are going to be working shifts then I think you need to have a reasonable commute to work. So you would need to pick an area close to a hospital. South Frankston is ok and there is a train to the city and they have expresses morning and night so a lot of people do commute to the city. The hospital in Frankston is under Peninsula Health and their site may assist you.

Point Cook is nowhere near Frankston or Berwick a long way away.

Hospitals near Berwick and commutable from most south eastern suburbs are at Berwick, Dandenong, Monash Medical Centre and these would be in Southern Health.

Point Cook would be Western Health

Geelong has a hospital too and my friend's son has done rotations there as doc and he likes Geelong Hospital.

The Alfred, Royal Womens, Childrens, Royal Melbourne, St Vincents, Epworth are all hospitals around the city centre and if you have no children then living in a 10km area around the city would be a good idea at first.

The Alfred is the main trauma hospital and my oh has been in there recently and his treatment was very very good.

Am really excited for you all! The Mornington peninsula looks fab seen it on place down under!ha It meant to have the best beaches, am a bit worried on the beach life in Melbourne, we have been to Perth and it is amazing, if my Partner was on the skills list, I would go there in a heart beat, but I ve not ever been to Melbourne so am giving it a shot. Were hopefully going on a 176 visa, waiting on ACS to assess partners skills. Thanks for your advice, as soon as we know were in I'll apply for the nursing board in oz! Good luck on the move :)

We have our visa and have had it for over two years now, long story as to why not there yet, lol. My hubby works for IBM and when we validated our visa last year he spoke to colleagues in both Sydney and Melbourne and doesn't think he will have any problems getting a job.

Hope you dont mind me asking you this, but I intend on emigrating over to Oz, particularly melbourne once I qualify as a nurse. I also was intending on going to those expo's soon. Which ones did you go to? And what was the reason they were not wanting newly qualified? Im thinking of trying to get on a graduate nursing program over there once qualifying here..if not then i will have to stay and work here for at least a yr before applying..i think thats my only option.
