Goochie
One of the many factors that will influence our choice of suburb when we arrive in Perth will be the risk of bush fires. Property prices further in land tend to reduce and being near the sea is not a great deal for us - This makes the outlying areas quite attractive. However, I guess these areas are also more vulnerable to bush fires? Are bush fires common around Perth?
windswept
In short, yes. (I work for the fire brigade - not as a firefighter! but I do know a little bit) As you've said, the closer in to town you are, the farther away from bushland, the safer, basically. That said, a lot of the new estates have very little natural bush left, due to the development, so these are not necessarily a problem.
newjez
Perth does tend to burn off, which is controversial - but as far as I know there hasn't been the devistation that has occured in the east coast from bush fires. Prevailing winds also tend to blow west to east, away from the city. This doesn't mean there is no risk, but I believe it is less than the east coast. windswept
Agree with what you say Newjez re: the prevailing winds. While burnoffs do start some bushfires which get out of control, by far the majority are lit by kids with matches, or pyromaniacs. Sad, but true.
