How do I apply for jobs while still abroad without using agents? Will potential employers accept to interview me on phone? Am I possibly going to be ignored until that time I get into OZ? Any one with such an experience?

Hi wwnde.... Have you checked out job sites for people wanting to work abroad. I have used to few and found my perfect job in Brisbane. You can google sites, but here's one or two i've used....

Sponsorship Australia

Linkedin - very good site.

What jobs are you looking for? I saw my job advertised, applied, found out that the employer was coming to the UK, went for interview, got the job, had to get Skills Assessment done at own expense, the company arrange an agent and all is going thru now..... should have visa in about 4 weeks. It all depends on if your job is in demand in Oz. The way things are at the minute out there you could be in luck. You just need to search the web for sites and there is a lot of them or just send your CV direct to companies out there, explain what you require and you never know......

The best form of finding these things out is do your research, get on the web, never give up..........

All the best...

Thanks. I am a surveyor/GIS specialist and have been granted a permanent resident visa. I have seen a number of jobs I qualify for advertised. Just wondering if I can be considered and get contacted for interviews by employers if I applied while still abroad. I plan to get in OZ in December. However if a job came earlier, I wont mind

Get applying now, send your CV off to as many companies as you can. you never know you could get a response tomorrow telling you " perfect, just what we're looking for, when can you get here" .. you just don't know and as you have been granted your visa they may offer you there and then, you could be off by end of week........ All i can say is " GET EVERYTHING GOING NOW " and good luck......

I would be applying for jobs ASAP, as GIS can command very high contracting rates (at least in Brisbane) due to a very serious skills shortage. I only know as my step mum has masters in geospatial science and is always rung up about contracts/jobs on the go and always gets excellent rates for her work.

I wouldn't expect you to have difficulty finding work.

To be fair, I do, only because she has enough on her plate (and isn't an expat, she is aussie as am I).

My advice would be to forward your CV to specialist recruiters in the area you are moving to, with a personalised email. ensure to mention you have a visa and can move ASAP (if this is the case). If this isn't the case (i.e your not ready to jump on a plane to start monday), I would leave it until you are in this situation. If at all possible.

Recruitment agents can be a little cold I have found as well so don't let it get you down, once your on their books your on their books and thats all the goal is, so you get contacted when the work comes in.

Seek.com.au is a good idea to understand the types of jobs and salaries/packages on offer, alongside the experience and requirements for each level of a role. They also do annual recruitment awards which can be good to find the best recruitment agencies.

What will ultimately get you the job is having contacts, and in this case, particularly with a specialist skill, this is still recruiters primarily that will assist you with that. Alot of jobs wont go online unless the recruitment agency (or the company advertising) doesn't already have a pool of applicants to search for that fit the role. How likely is this you need to ask yourself.

They will go through who they already have before advertising for more further interest, and alot of the time will get someone they want before going to advertising.

As you haven't already made contacts in the industry like you normally would through work and functions, recruiters are your best bet. Don't waste your time going to the big spam types, I would search for specialists who work in your field who are actually going to spend the time finding you the right job rather than just any job the computer says you are a match for (and hence wasting your time going to interviews for jobs which are not a good fit).

The company that really wants you for your skills are more likely to appreciate the fact that you are overseas and be patient whilst you move, as they know the fit for the role is good.

Just my two cents.

Many recruitment agencies might just not even consider you until you're in the country. One way around this is sometimes jobs that are advertised online, will also be advertised on the company websites (Can take some looking around to find them if the company isn't named in the advert). If you can contact the companies directly, you can sometimes bypass the agency, or at least get your name and qualifications known to the company.

Another tack would be to just look up all the companies in your area of work and cold contact them, with a good cover letter and CV, making it clear that you've got full work rights. This way you can sometimes get considered for positions that haven't even been advertised yet.

Are you on linkedin? Have any of your contacts worked in or have contacts in Australia? Ask for an introduction/recommendation. It's all about who you know.

I am trying all that has been mentioned. My biggest dilemma I do not know of any fellow geospatial/GIS/Surveyors in Australia to recommend me. I have sevrally been told that is the most sure way.

Have you tried joining the Australian Geospatial Professional network on linkedin?

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1549187&mostPopular=&trk=tyah

I would think that if you join the group, contribute in conversation for a couple weeks or so, then post that you are looking to make the move and already have a visa, they may be able to make a recommendation, or at the very least your name would be known and they can point you in the direction of some companies.

Alternatively use the list of members as a list of companies to approach.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it would be very difficult for anyone on this forum to 'recommend' anyone else, unless they had met professionally.

How best do I identify companies to contact for employment while still abroad? Apart from LinkedIn could sending blind applications to companies that advertsed a couple of months for positions I qualify work?
