Do rentals come with white goods?

Was wondering if we should buy a new washing machine and take it with or do most rental homes come with the white goods like here in good 'ol england? Washing machines seem a lot cheaper here in UK than in Oz.

Hi, Most rentals come with a cooker, some do provide other stuff such as fridge and washer, but you have to check when you view the property.

If you buy new to bring with you, -please be aware that any items you ship over should be over 12 months old, if not you could be charged for importing them. I have never heard of anyone who had to pay import duties but it is a possibility/

White goods in Australia are very competitive with the UK price, Remember that the price that you see an item advertised for is not what you pay, you are expected to haggle and get a discount. Buying fridges, washing machines and other white goods together you would expect a very good discount.

That's true. We got a fridge which was 50% off and a washing machine which was 30% off last weekend (winter sale) at Harvey Norman. But we did not own any white goods before we came here so we had to buy them anyway in Oz.

Most modern units will have a cooker, dishwasher and possibly a tumble drier. The drier is particularly common in apartments where some body corporates have rules about hanging washing on the balcony. Given the fact you have no garden and aren't allowed to use the balcony, a tumble drier is essential...even in the likes of Brisbane where although it is very hot, the humidity means clothes don't dry on their own out of direct sun. Older units or houses can vary as to what comes in the rental.

If you don't have a decent washing machine or drier, don't go out and buy them in the UK. There are deals to be had in Oz and you will have the peace of mind a warranty gives. Remember that pretty much all retailers of white goods will negotiate a price, so haggle as much as you want. We saved about $150 on a $700 (sale price) washing machine after much haggling.

Most of the big electrical shops actually have signs up telling you to haggle! "Ask us for a deal"... "Pay less for cash" etc. The easiest way is just to say...what's your best price for this....you will almost always get a discount and nobody will be offended that you have asked. It's not usual to do it in the UK, but for electrical goods in Australia, it;s almost like buying a second hand car!

For your own good, check first whether the place you'll rent will have those things. You don't want any unnecessary appliances around. But I guess they offer something like this here.
