Cycling into Brisbane CBD.

Dear all,

OH currently cycles to work in the UK and is keen to continue when we hopefully finally get to Brisbane. However, we are planning to live in the Bay side area, Thornlands, Cleveland etc and his job will be at the Mater near south bank.

I think it will be too far to cycle all the way, does anyone cycle if so how long does it take? Or could he get say half way and then catch the train, if so what stations?

He hates driving so really is not keen to commute to the CBD via car and we have heard parking is expensive so at least part way on the bike has to be an option.

Many thanks in advance.

I agree. Thornlands, Cleveland are a very long way from Brisbane and the ride from there to the CBD is not very bicycle commuter friendly from accounts I've heard....very car dominated place as so far away.

You are not allowed to bring your bike on the train during peak hours:

Between 7:00am - 9:30am towards the CBD

Between 3:00pm - 6:30pm outwards from the CBD

Bike lockers are available at many stations. Not sure whether demand is high or not: http://www.queenslandrail.com.au/AllStations/Pages/BikeLockers.aspx

Future plans for bicycle lockup at bus station at Capalaba: http://translink.com.au/about-translink/what-we-do/infrastructure-projects/capalaba-park-n-ride

Not sure if you are already committed but if you want a modern brick and tile house in a family area a suburb like Wishart might be better (http://www.ourbrisbane.com/suburbs/wishart) as he could connect up to the dedicated cycle path that runs up the side of the south east freeway (slowish to load): http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Wishart-to-City-on-SE-fwy-bike-path.

It is a very family orientated area and there are good primary and high state and private schools in the area. Wishart is in the Mansfield State High School catchment (http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/catchment/pdfs/mansfield-shs.pdf) which has long been a very well regarded school. It runs a full French language immersion programme if interested. Wishart also has direct access to a great family cycle path that winds through the parks all the way to Carindale and beyond: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Mt-Gravatt-to-Wynnum-bikepath-both-ways

I would recommend the pocket south of Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road, east of Newham. Say around here: Map

Public transport from Wishart is via busses which join onto the bus-only south east busway and drop off outside the Mater at the Mater Hill Busway Station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mater_Hill_busway_station) and then continue on to the CBD. A lot more pleasant than the train if using it later at night (and closer to the Mater as well).

You can see the busway stop to the left of the MMC (it travels via dedicated bus tunnels north and south of this stop):
