Hi,

We are just getting sorted to apply for our 176 ss visa.

I do care work (Nina 27) My partner (kev 30) is a mechanic and we have two young daughters age 1 and 4.

We are looking at moving near Hobart (well within 20 min drive of Hobart)

We would like information of jobs, places to live, childcare, shipping etc.

And we also would like to meet some pen pals (internet pals) to get to know and maybe meet once we get there (2012 hopefully).

We currently live in Barnsley, UK.

My 20ft container arrived here in Tasmania for a cost of just over appro. 4,000 pounds which was fully inclusive back in 2009

They come in across the water from me @ Bell Bay which is northern Tasmania, which for you will then be sent by truck over to Hobart.

Yes you can also bring in your car with you... I will find you the link.....OK.http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/97053-transporting-your-car-oz-everything-you-need-know.html.

hi raynorina

i know what you mean we have not used an agent either and the ammount of paperwork is really scary. We had one company called ocean pacific come round to give us a estimate of shipping our stuff over now take a deep breath thay quoted £6000 and we only live ina two bed masionette.

im currently looking at the howrah area just on the outskirts of Hobart seems like a nice place for familys do you have any ideas on where you want to live.

Do you ever watch the bbc wanted down under programme as we were on that it did help us with the decision about which areas etc i fell in love with a house in ranlaigh nr huonville but hubby said it was too far out.

if i find out anything interesting or on schools etc i will try email you the info

Susie -

Can you please give a rough idea of how much cost of living is?

for example - gas, electric, water, council tax / rates, tv, internet..... also cost for running a vehicle (i seem to find contradicting info on the internet for this)

and if there are any other costs you think will be of interest..

regards

Hi Nina,

Its a hard one because I am living in the country

I am on 2.5 acres and for my rates I pay $1,100 per annum.

There is no council tax in Australia and if you are renting you will not be required to pay rates Nina.

No TV licence required.

My electricity bill is low, because we use wood fires, so its mainly lights and water and cooking.. so my last quarters bill was $120 pq.

I do have a heat pump, but its not my preferred method of heating Nina.

Our family's electricity bills combined with heating in Hobart are around about $400-$600 depending on the season

We have a two tier system for electricity bills here ... hot water and heating is billed at a lower price from the others.

We also use our outside kitchen (gas bottles) so we tend to do all our cooking outside, and the gas bottles are cheap ($30)

Water is free because we have water tanks (rain water)

(Others should answer you on this one)

Internet, because I am living in a rural area (40k from Launceston) I have a satellite dish which is about $59 pm.

(Again leave this one to others in the city)

We do not have to have ambulance cover and this applies for all Tasmanian residents.

Rego for our 4 x 4 is about $500 pa which gives you 3rd party insurance, but we fully comp it.

We have a Mitsubishi Station wagon which is around $350 pa.

Telstra Landline which is on a $49 plan per month.

I will have a good think for you Nina, and post....

to those guys already in the hobart and surrounding ares where would you say is a good place to bring up the little ones, good primary schools etc

Hi Cass,

Sorry cant help on the school bit but I can certainly direct you about nice areas to live.

I will start with the areas to avoid!!!

Clarendon Vale

Risdon Vale

Mornington

Warrane

Gagebrook

Bridgewater

Rokeby

Parts of Glenorchy and Moonah

Nice areas;

Kingston

Blackmans Bay

Taroona

Sandy Bay

Lindisfarne

Geilston Bay

Bellerive

Howrath

Tranmere

Richmond

New Town

North Hobart

Lenah Valley

We live on the Eastern shore.. can be up to 5 degrees warmer as we dont have as much of the shadow of Mount Wellington, and I think its prettier over her, but it depends on your needs as a family.. lots of famillies heading to Kingston Bay to live, and its very popular with good amenities for kids. But its not my cup of tea..

Hope that helps and let me know if I can be of further help!

Steph (Living in Hobart for almost 3 months)
