One year on and still LOVING it!!!

OMG! I can't believe how fast the last year has gone - we have done so much, met so many wonderful people, the children have had the best year at school, both of us are in jobs we (mostly) enjoy and our only complaints have been about the weather (worst and wettest winter for years!) and too much socialising (we can't keep up with the pace!!!).

To anyone looking to come out, it isn't easy and the first few months are pretty damn hard but work at it enough, get yourself out with new people and hopefully after a while you will feel settled like we are. We feel like we have known our new mates forever, not just 12 short months. We are hoping to buy a place out here in Berwick in the next few years but have not been able to sell property in the UK so will have to put that on hold, the plus side of that being the rent is cheaper than any mortgage we would get for a comparable property.

One down side has been that my Dad had a minor stroke two weeks before him and Mum were due to visit (they would have landed today), but again the plus side is they have insurance and he is recovering and they will visit as soon as he is well enough. We have also planned a roadtrip to Sydney to make up for the disappointment and will hopefully be meeting up with another POM mate who emigrated 6 months ago along the way.

Having done the big move I can only say to others try and find a positive out of every negative and you will lead a happy life - things get you down but you can't change everything, just the way you think about it!! Good luck to anyone coming over soon and if you are going to be anywhere near Berwick I know a great bunch of people who will look after you, just be prepared to PARTY hard!!!

Karen, great update!!

Glad to hear dad's on the mend, don't worry I am sure they will be with you soon and we will have more excuses to party.

Just to anyone who is thinking of moving to Berwick you have to watch where you live as Karen isn't telling porkies when she says you will need to prepare yourself for some hard partying lol. I think she has to be the best party queen in Melbourne lol.

Karen,

Lovely to hear you are getting along fabulously, sounds like Berwick is the place for you! I see all your party pics!

Sorry our planned meet to Cardinia was rained off so I didn't really get to chat to some of my FB friends.. Silly weather!

Here's to the next year!

Not sure you want the whole truth and nothing but the truth!!!

Shopping used to be great - you went to Coles or Woolworths and got your food, Dan Murphys for the essential alcohol and then to the shopping centre for the clothes and home things.

In the first few months we saved a fortune - until some clever KMART bosses decided to get some Asda/Tesco bosses over here to start creating 'Coles/Tesco's' out here - soooo not good for the wallet.

The lifestyle has been great so far BUT you have to be prepared to go and find it - the world doesn't come to you, you have to go to it.

As for the weather - lmao - it has been the coldest, wettest winter and an extremely humid summer (by Victorian standards) - BUT I still love it! OH moaned that he had to scrape ice off the windscreen about three times in July, ok so it isn't hot and sunny all year but better than snow (although you can drive to it if you really want to). given what is happening in Queensland at the moment - I would much rather a few hot sticky days than what they are suffering with.

Would I move back to the UK? Sorry - not a chance, it may not be perfect out here but it is a lot better than what we left behind. That said if I could package up a few 'special' people from the UK and transplant them my world would be complete!!

Hope that helps K x
