Jowill
Yes Australian citizens and permanent visa holders (including RRV holders) are able to travel to NZ without a visa and be granted a residence visa on arrival. That will allow you to stay in NZ indefinitely. You don't get New Zealand citizenship by virtue of being an Australian citizen -> these are two different countries! You'll need to satisfy requirements for a grant of NZ citizenship through residence etc...... If you get a NZ visa by arriving in NZ with a Australian visa and decide to migrate to NZ that way, you'll need to be careful that residence in NZ can only be used to apply for a NZ RRV (which is for NZ of course, not Australia). By being absent from Australia you risk losing your Australian permanent visa altogether... and if you lose that but haven't lived in NZ for long enough to apply for a NZ RRV then you'll not be able to return to either country!
