Hi folks...complete newbie here and as such i apologise if this or similar question has been asked before.

Moving to Melbourne sometime this summer (rather, winter for you).....work will be in Kilsyth area.....can't make up our minds whether to rent a house relatively local to work or (current favourite) to rent an apartment down town somewhere. We're a middle aged couple (ok, 48/49....aka old to most of you i'm sure!) who like to eat out/socialise. What is the commute like from CBD to Kilsyth (bearing in mind we would seem to be going against the traffic flow) and back. Are properties 'local' that much better value for a couple without kids who really only need a smallish place to comfortably crash out from time to time?

ps....(daft but extremely important) my wife is terribly afraid of spiders and has been spooked by stories.....hence partly the preference for something downtown (and as far off the ground as possible!!). Can we have some sensible input on that aspect please?

Any input/advice gratefully received.

Cheers!!

Wow your heading to a nice (IMO) area. Id def go for montrose or even kalorama to live. Simply as its at the top end of the dandenongs, which is beautiful. From here your about 1 hr from the CBD. If you ant to live in suburbia then go towards Doncaster - huge shopping center. Templestow appears to be a nice place, village/community feel.

Each suburb has their own entertainment/dining/drinking areas, the close to the dandenongs the fewer, but it is a tourist area, so theres lots of quirky shops, pubs and restaurants.

hope that helps

(IMO) You couldn't choose a better place to be working. The traffic in the immediate area shouldn't be too stressful and if you choose to live to the West of Kilsyth you'll be against the traffic anyway. That whole corner of the Mebourne suburbs, from Rosanna through to Kalorama offers such a great variety of options, not only in price, but environment. I won't pretend to know if you are more drawn to the countryside and a bit more space or the bustle of city life. Either way you'll find something perfect for yourselves within an easy 30 minute drive of Kilsyth. We moved from the more central suburbs to Montmorency near Eltham a few months ago and love the quiet but suburban life - we have bags of restaurant options nearby and arguably the nicest and quietest (in terms of traffic) High Street in the whole region. I guess you're just going to have to explore...

We should catch up when you arrive, we live in Croydon hills but my brother and his wife are in Kilsyth they are 53 and 49 so your age group. From the Liverpool area i have been here 22 years and they have been here 15 years. Kilsyth is a fairly good place to live, i lived there for about 7 years. Lots of places would probably suit you in that area.

If you want to live near the city then it should take about 45 mins to commute to Kilsyth. If you want some 'action' and want to socialise, go to shows, go out to restaurants that stay open later than 10pm then I would suggest you do look closer to the city.

While areas around Kilsyth (we live in Warrandyte a lovely leafy suburb) are very nice and the Dandenongs are close by which is very pretty, there is not a great deal to do for a couple without kids who want to get plenty of entertainment.

As for spiders, your wife really doesn't need to worry too much, we have been here for over three years and I have seen a few huntsmen and a couple of redbacks. The redbacks can be squashed pretty easily with your shoe!! The Huntsmen are a little harder to deal with, but really if you are in the city then you will limit being exposed to them. Redbacks tend to hide in piles of wood, sheds, garages places like that, I'm not sure about Huntsmen but they are not poisonous. White tip spiders can be anywhere but again are reasonably small and dealt with quite quickly. In all honesty, you will probably be more concerned about whether the home you decide on as good heating in the winter and air con for the summer, rather than spiders - they really are not that much of an issue.

Having no children and being more mature I would opt for closer to the CBD. Your commute would then be against the traffic anyway so should be fine.

The suburbs tend to be great if you have lived here had children who are grown and built a base, but to move to them with no base would be a little lonely I believe. Too far away from restaurants and night life.

If you lived near the CBD then you can walk to everything, restaurants, shows, always something going on.

Thank you all for your responses......very much apppreciated and all my questions well covered. I have no doubt having wandered around the boards a little over the past week or so these forums are likely to prove invaluable to us over the coming weeks and months.

Cheers,

Tony.
