I'd think we'll be moving around Aug too. He has just accepted the contract and now waiting for registration from AMC. I think this takes about 6 to 8 weeks. Then it would be the Visa/Workpermit. Not sure how long its going to take, but the agent advised that we are looking at Aug/Sep. We are thinking of renting our house. They are quite flexible with his start date. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck with your visas guys!!! We too are moving to Melbourne in Sept, I'm a nurse and OH air con. We should compare notes, when we find anything out of interest about the area let each other know!! Of course you may not want to compare notes with me as I'm only a nurse..............................................:laugh:

point cook/altona area, just because my job in the western suburbs.I would have loved mornington peninsula but need to be close to cbd cos hubby is in banking/finance kind of job.

Yeah thats the reason we have point cook on the cards as it ticks lots of boxes, really depends on OHs job, if he secures something mobile it doesn't matter too much because he'll be all over the place anyway but if he gets something site based in CBD it would be better to be a bit nearer to CBD. I'll try to get something in the nearest hospital to were we settle. The Alfred looks quite good, don't think the commute from point cook would be too bad to there.

We are basically going to decide when we get there and get a feel for the areas.

At least the mornington penninsula will be there at the weekends if we settle elsewhere!!

Where are all the Doctors?? I never actually noticed there are not many on here!!

I can give you some advice on registration and accreditation etc, I've just registered 2 doctors. Drop me a pm with your email address and i'll forward you the pack i'm putting together for doctors looking to work in Australia.

My knowledge is that there is a shortage of GP's on the Mornington Peninsula, Hastings has been advertising for a long long time years for more gps. Their lists are closed and new patients have to go out of the town to the doctor.

I also know that a GP used to be on Britvics and he works on the Mornington Peninsula and if you post on that site you may get a lot of info. Also quite a few nurses who are working in the hospitals on there.

My friend's son is a specialist and works at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and therefore he lives in North Melbourne so he can walk to the hospital.

All the newer outer areas of Melbourne need GP's, inner city is well serviced.

There's a doctor's mailgroup (The Nat-Div Mailgroup) in Australia that has a lot of discussions about GP practice. You might want to sign up and find out from the GPs on there (quite a few who have emigrated from the UK and places like S Africa). You might also be interested in medical publications such as Australian Doctor, to get an idea of what's happening in practice. There's a huge shortage of GPs in Australia, even in outer urban areas.

finaly I get some doctors responding! I was convinced we are an antisocial group of people! Thanks everyone for the suggestions and I will work through them soon. My application is via recruiting agency and after what felt like a century, I finally completed my skills assessment and registration. Am going for the ENS 121 and hopefully, the agent has lodged the application. The excitement I had of migrating to Oz has slowly turned into fear of the unknown, what with the long process of registration! :arghh:

Hi there

I was just wondering how your application with the AMC was going? My husband is a GP and he lodged his application at the beginning of July only to be told that they have now changed the system of registering doctors so we have had to start again and complete a new application! It is so frustrating! He was meant to start his job at the end of November but this is now going to be very unlikely as apparently the applications could take 3-4 months! Did you manage to get yours in before the system changed? Do you have an estimated date when you are going?

Hope it's all going well for you.

Emma

Is this regarding an AMC application or AHPRA registration? All the health boards merged at the end of June when they launched AHPRA and its absolute chaos, Some of my doctors have told me that they have to wait till October before they will get their registration,

The whole thing is becoming an absolute joke and nobody over here knows how to deal with it.

Yes I managed to get my registration with AMC. But even I had to complete a fresh application because the first one was old,AND they charged me an adminstration fee of $110! It's frustrating! I should have started by end of this month ha ha ha! So like your husband, I dont when cos as you say,the visa applications are taking longer. All the best for you too.

Hey guys/ girls. Any other medics massively screwed over by AHPRA? Should have started in August in Sydney, pushed back to 1st Sep, but no sign of any board registration yet. Sleeping on a sofabed having rented out my flat and my slot in the training programme has been filled so I'm locuming. Guys in Sydney hoping for October... BMA predicted 3 month backlog so I'm hoping somebody out there might have some good news and achieved the elusive AHPRA registration.... The nurses' threads aren't very cheering reading but at least we're all screwed

What is the AHPRA - my other half has the AMC rego which she applied for early on the in the year but do you need AHPRA as well?

the AMC is a pointless accreditation body who collect information from specialist colleges etc in order to write a recommendation to AHPRA or the WA healthboard. You can't register with the AMC and having AMC accreditation alone doesn't let you work in Aussie.

AHPRA are like a version of the GMC and PCTs in the UK whom hold a list of all registered doctors. WA are joining AHPRA in October (19th I think) sop apply before then if you are going to work in WA.
