Hi everyone, we have been here a week and havent seen any scary insects yet!!! The town is lovely and I have been into work a few times and they have all been so lovely. They have bent over backwards to make us feel welcome, which they have done.

The weather has been a bit up and down but still warm non the less. So far so good!! Start work on Monday and am looking foward to this, will update soon, hope to hear from you all.

Regards

Hi to you all, I've just stumbled on to this link and it's a gem! I'm also off to Oz with my husband and two children and will be based at the Morwell office. We have our visa's. container is coming tomorrow (so tripping over boxes!) and flights booked for 17th January. I've been looking at living in Warragul..anyone got on tips/info on good areas, areas to avoid, etc. I've contacted the school and first impressions seem ok? Picking the right area and school is a minefield and feels like a 'lucky dip' so any info would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Hope the people who have already arrived in Oz are settling in and hopefully looking forward to a warm Christmas!

Hi Jue2,

I am originally from Traralgon, been living in UK for last 15 years. It depends if you want to live and work in the same area. Warragul will be a 40min commute each eay. Most who work in Morwell, live and socialise in Traralgon rather than Morwell. It is a deprived area - hence the need for social workers.

Both Traralgon and Warragul are lovely places, both have good schools and are on the same train line to Melbourne.I know a couple of people who work in the Morwell offices and they are a hoot.

Does it depend on what your husband will be doing?

Caroline, I will phone you next week - just finished 110 hr working week so I'm shattered. I will organise trip down south.

Hi Guys,

Just got a call from my agency in Melbourne, as i realised that DHS had changed my office from Warragul to Morwell, they didn't mention this to me and now my trip is in serious doubt as Morwell is 40 minutes drive from Warragul! I am a bit concerned that they never mentioned it and just put it on the offer letter, is this an omen?

Hope you and your family arrived safely in Warragul? We moved here two years ago from Cornwall - it is a fantastic place to live.

Hi

I am a social worker in the UK, with Permanent Residency for Oz. I considered applying for this but didnt as have lived in Sydney previously and want to return there. I just wanted to ask how you have found social work where you are and also how it has been being further away from the big centres. Any comments appreciated.

Hope it's going well

Hi all,

Me and my partner are both social workers and we arrived in Canberra Australia in Feb 2009. Unfortunetly, things have not run smoothly for us (although it is only fair to say that Canberra is a beautiful place) and we are most unsettled and somewhat unhappy  We do not want to give up and return to the UK so we have been seriously considering a move to another state. We have been contacted about postions in Gippsland and just wondered if people would be so kind to share how the dept there has dealt with the process and settling people in over there? Also what your initial impressions of Gippsland are? We have two children aged 13 and 6.

Although Care and Protection issues are similiar in Canberra some of the practices are quite different and any feedback re: your work experinces so far there would also be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to PM me if you prefer.

It would be great to here how things are going for you all and perhaps meet up in the near future!

Good luck to you all

Hi All!

My family and I are also doing the 'Gippsland Move' We have had the movers/packers in today-it has made it sooo much more real. We will be moving to Warragul- we fly out on 2/12/09...

Am soooo excited, but nervous too! FANTASTIC idea about getting together in January-have already mentioned it to a few people.. a good idea to get a bit of a support network going!

Have not used the site before- looks good.

Good luck with all the prep and sorting out...

Mandy

Hi, How do you like Warragul ? I hope to be moving to Athlone soon, a little info would be good thanks.

Hi,

Curious if everyone who was chatting on this thread about moving over went, and whether you are all still there and happy.

I am also curious to know how it's all going for you all. Any positive/negative comments would be appreciated as i am looking to move over in a few years and wondered what social work in Oz is really like from those with first hand experience.
